<0> my experience is about a 50% success rate with upgrading... if you do upgrade make sure you backup everything. <1> i am just wondering if there is a special iso which it requiers <1> i see <1> will my oem cd key work for an upgrade? <0> At my work we had about 200 Win 2K Pro boxes we wanted to upgrade, after about 20 with less then 10 working properly we decided to just do a wipe and reload of each... or rathar imaged them all with a clean copy of XP Pro. <0> prob not. <0> Microsoft is pretty good at making their keys only work on the specific distro of Windows it's shipped with. If you have a full OEM copy of Win XP Pro that key will only work on similar. <0> But if you boot from the CD see if it gives you the option to upgrade.. I know older versions of Win offered this on the full version. <1> so i would need an oem disk to install it too <1> xp pro oem <0> You only have the CD key and no media? <1> if i was to do a clean install <1> right <1> it was an old gateway <1> which has been scrapped <1> but i have the cd key
<1> so i figure why not <0> you need the media to do anything, and with out that your key is useless. <0> You _may_ be able to call the OEM vendor and give them some story and maybe they'll send you the new media, but you'll need to know the OEM that distributed the license plus come-up with some good tale of whoa to pursuade someone to send you the media. <1> i ve done it many times with xp home editions <0> Done what many times? <1> installed with an oem cd key <1> say using other media <2> Just lie your pants off <1> just xp home disk from another manufacturer <3> yea <3> what 'oem' company was it you were using? <1> oh i used a compaq cd key on with dell oem media <0> sparklemo: did it work? <1> yep <1> i just had to reactivate the window <3> it worked many times <1> which took 3 mins <1> i ve done it about 5 different times <1> with different vendors <1> just have to reactivate windows after that <1> but it was alwas home edition <0> I thought the big bad Microsoft would only let you reactive like 3 times? <1> no it was all different cd keys <0> oh, well if you have an OEM Key for the full copy of Windows XP Pro you'll need an OEM copy of full Win XP Pro to use. that's your delimma <1> but i dont have any xp pro media <1> yes <3> in this day and age .. how does that happen <1> :/ <0> Your options are a) find one on EBay, b) try to call the OEM, c) try to find one on a warez site and use your key instead of the one provided, d) shell out the cash for another copy <0> or if you work someplace or know someone that works for a company that buys OEM copies of Win XP Pro see if they'll grab you one to 'borrow'. <2> Hmmm are windows XP interchangeable as long as they're valid, so c) would work? <0> We use XP Pro OEM here and have boxes of unopened media in a closet <2> err 'are windows XP keys' <3> any non oem version of windows cd key will work with any other similar <0> MLazarus: if you find an OEM copy it should work. I haven't done much testing in XP but I know on WIn 2K Pro an OEM key would not work on a non OEM distro of Win 2K Pro. same thing for Office.. we have like 4 Office 2000 Pro keys we use since we have use OEM, non-OEM, one with SP1 Preinstalled, and one iwth SP2 preinstalled on CD. THey keys are all different. <3> oem cd key's will only work with that oem's windows distro, sometimes not even on two different machines <0> dok, but can you use an OEM CD Key with non-OEM distro of Win XP Pro? <3> no <3> definitely not! <0> that's what I thought.. and that's my experience <1> samalex wana send me some unopened media :) <3> I'm sure its possible, it happens, etc, but the few times I've tried it over the years it's never worked <2> They only limited the number of times you can use a key starting with XP, right? My brother has an actual copy of XP Pro and he only gets 2 installs, as far as I remember. <3> you can activate nearly as much as you like, you just cant do it automatically over the internet, you have to call it in <2> A <2> h <3> and explain to the nosey microsoft rep why you're reinstalling for the 9th time <1> i always call it in <1> and the nice indian fellows always helpful <3> h <1> as long as we have a dictinoary handy <0> sparklemo: My suggestion, and this might not be the suggestion of the channel by any means, if this is a personal laptop, you have a valid CD key, screw it -- download a warez copy and use that. THe way I look at it, you have a valid license and you're trying to get it going, but Microsofts security is preventing you from using software you hvae a legal license to use. Do what you must to get it installed. <2> Bold, daring. <1> that is too bold <2> They might track you down with orbital microwaves though. <1> because i am thinking of using this laptop to log into the active directory at work <2> Immediate death. <3> There are windows xp pro, sp2 slipstreamed non-activation requiring .iso's all over the web <1> i d rather go with the activated copy <1> if i can get one <0> sparklemo: doesn't matter, with millions of copies of windows floating around like they care.
<3> why? <1> just so its legal <3> the piracy microsoft see's inside the u.s. is some fraction of what they lose to piracy overseas <0> sparklemo: that's why i said if this is personal laptop -- if you're using itat work, have them buy you a license. <1> because if i use that copy then the genuine windows authentication wont allow me to update the windows <3> the genuine crap uses the cd key.. microsoft released xp originally without requiring activation, it asked if you wanted to. <0> dok, dude, we have computers with over $1000 worth of Microsoft software -- on a $400 box. By using a warez copy you're not taking food outta the mouthes of any programmers. I understand your frustration with this, I've been ther myself many times, but you do what you gotta do. You have inyour hand a legal license to use Windows, and Microsoft will not sell you only the media -- but Microsoft only recognizes the license as the legal <3> sparkle was the guy that wasn't keen on the idea, not me <0> dok, meaht to direct that to sparklemo :) sorry <1> yea i know its a big pain in the arse <1> to be honest <4> hey <4> what do you guys do about getting wireless printers on a WLAN when using WPA+Enterprise with a RADIUS server? <4> How do the printers authenticate <0> that's what I don't get, you have the license but no media, but MS won't send you media so you can use your license. If on the other hand you have the media and no license, Microsft will force you to buy the license to use that media. Even if they sold the media for $15 or so a CD given you prove you have a valid license, that'd work.. but not an option from Microsoft. <4> what are you talking about ? <5> man <4> I missed the first part of what you're talking about <5> the guy who set up this router.. is a cock <4> re: license <5> wtf did they use sla for <5> floating statics > * <5> or even ospf <4> sartan: what's "sla" <0> FK|Work`: sparklemo has an OEM license for WIn XP Pro and needs to install it, but he has no media. <4> On the OEM machine it came with? <5> FK|Work`: IP Service level agreement <5> they used it for 'failover' and 'redundancy' for this link <4> sartan oh <5> it's overly complicated. <4> sartan: what's "floating statics" <5> and the routing tables don't match up what is actually configured. <5> FK|Work`: basically two links to the same location, one route has a higher metric so that it's not used <0> FK|Work`: not sure... but you're right, sparklemo, if you want to stay 'legal' then you can't use that OEM license on any machine other then the one it was shipped with. Forgot about that caviet <5> and when the primary route goes down the secondary (with the higher metric) is used <5> the SLA configuration here actually pings across the remote link(s) and the vpn(s) to /attempt/ to insert routes into the router. <4> samalex / sparklemo ... and in that case, the OEM will be more than happy to ship you install or restore media <4> depending on the OEM <5> which of course completely don't match up with the static routes we have here <4> sartan: that sounds hackish. <0> FK|Work`: I mentioned that, but many won't without lots of fuss. <5> I don't know why he set it up this way. <5> but this guy is a ccie or something <0> any of you gents know anything about Sharepoint? <5> i can see why.. but it's overcomplicated <0> SPS or WSS? <4> we use WSS here <4> not SPS tho <0> FK|Work`: is it possible to create a Docu Library on one WSS and access it from another? I'm trying to do this, but I'm having zero luck. <0> Ideally I'd like to put the DL on a subarea of the SPS< but I'm finding that without some crazy programming or $$$ plugins there's almost no easy way to get data between SPS and WSS. <4> if SPS is part of the picture, I have no clue <4> But I ***ume you don't just want to put a hyperlink on the other wss site pointing to the doc lib on the first wss <4> ? <4> got me :D <5> type really fast <6> My 3mbps bonded T1s consistantly give terrible results on voip tests such as www.testyourvoip.com and speedtest.vonage.com <0> FK|Work`: My scenario is that I have a Team Site (WSS) for our Policies and Procedures folks to collaborate with a DL for all their policies. I want the general ***ociate to have access to the DL but not to all their discussions and such. I figured if I could tie back to their DL from another WSS that'd work, but linknig back to the P&P WSS would expose all their non-DL stuff. <5> hi again! <6> The speed tests aren't too bad and pings to most sites are normally pretty consistent, around 50-70ms <6> hello :) <5> Smurfing: did you talk to your isp? <5> we already checked your interfaces they looked fine <6> I just opened a trouble ticket <6> Anyway - I was just wondering how I can test it, maybe it's a packets per second issue? <5> cool. <7> can i open the task manager without pressing ctrl+alt+del under xp <5> well first of all you have to take down all of the applications running on the link <5> (use an acl) <5> then try to run something like iperf across it <5> your t1 is load balancing on a per-ip-packet basis <5> if i can remember your config <6> yes <7> ah its ok, taskmgr <6> I can get a realtime report of the packets per second coming in off the wireless network...
