<4> <DrBukkake> You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance and Germany doesn't want to go to war.

<5> can someone help me with phantom upload activity. The ISP logs show I've been uploading non stop at max speed last 200 hours, but locally I see no activity. I installed network monitors, packet sniffers and ran rootkit revealers... How can I locate/identify the problem?
<7> your machine the only opne on teh LAN
<7> do you have a WAP? is someone whoring it?
<6> you've sniffed at the internet connection side of your gateway? do you have a router, or a internet sharing software, or what?
<7> perfmon?
<5> nah there are more but they kinda look ok
<5> no WAP
<6> whats that mean?
<7> perfmon all of them, hat will show you the culprit
<5> peerce, I use a router
<5> perfmon?
<6> does hte router have any monitoring capabilties?
<5> the router is the modem, two in one.. it probably has a lot of stuff, it's an embeded Linux, but the ****ing ISP doesn't give out the p***words
<5> ok i found perfmon ;)
<6> then ask the ISP to verify that the data is in fact coming from your router, and which local IP it is from
<4> sartan: all those php install readme's ****... i was looking in the php.ini and found this perdy little line
<4> ; **You CAN safely turn this off for IIS, in fact, you MUST.**
<8> how friendly
<9> More beans, Mr. Taggart?
<5> peerce good idea
<4> sartan: :P
<6> suv4x4; if in fact your link was runnign at wire speed, FTPs' would be slow and ping times would be many times normal
<6> are you seeing that?
<6> like, FTP a file to your ISP's ftp/www server, time it. how many kilobyte/sec? how fast is your outbound link?
<6> silly question, is anyone playing World of Warcraft ?
<8> no i won't give the sword i scammed ian of
<6> when new patches are released, it torrents them for several days and eats up most ofyour bandwidth
<6> heh. ian's raid team is making it all the way to the 10th boss in molten core now.
<8> go go go
<6> he's bummed tho, they resumed the battle against the 10th on sunday night, and since thats a school night, he can't join in.
<5> peerce, well actually I have problems: dropped packets and unstable internet
<5> peerce, they said it's my upload
<5> peerce, that I don't see
<10> peerce: At least your son knows what real trees look like.
<4> sartan: works now
<4> sartan: 5 hours, and all i had 2 do was turn a 1 into a 0
<6> suv4x4; are they cooperative? can they monitor your link with you on the phone, and you unplug each systems' ethernet til it stops?
<4> and all those damn online guides didn't cover that
<4> :s
<5> peerce, maybe I can arse them to do that
<5> dunno
<6> suv4x4; explain you have really tried and can't find the source of the traffic or even SEE the traffic, and need some help debugging it. this should be pretty easy for them, you're on the phone at your ethernet switch, they are watching the traffic counts, you yank cables til it stops, voila! you found it. now you can go dig into THAT system instead of poking around blindly
<8> Phyx-: what was the variable
<5> peerce, in perfmon I added NetworkInterface (all)>Bytes Sent/sec and it just doesn't show anythiing when I upload :P

<4> cgi.force_redirect = 0
<6> suv4x4; not all network interface drivers are instrumented with the stuff perfmon needs ;-/
<4> sartan: does parsing
<7> do that one each machine on your LAN
<4> but i get this now
<4> CGI Error
<4> The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers.
<11> anyone know about laws with ISPs? if an isp was reading email what you do?
<11> or leaving a mailbox open that you cancelled
<8> isps have better things to do than read your email
<8> don't freak out.
<8> once they start monitoring it they become responsible for it
<6> Ko|d; whats in your contract with them ?
<8> so if you're watching child porn they're responsible for not cancelling it.
<8> so hey don't worry about it.
<11> they sent nasty emails to someone sending mail to us
<4> Ko|d: they're not obligated to delete an account when you cancel it
<12> I just reinstalled xp and now I get these black boxes on the sides of the screen. anyone know how to take them out
<6> MellowGuy; adjust the display refresh rate.
<6> MellowGuy; CRT or LCD?
<11> I'm in a small community the isp probably doesnt' have much better to do
<12> crt
<6> MellowGuy; try 75 or 80Hz or around there.
<11> I cancelled with them, they said they would forward the email for one month
<6> also, did you install the latest drivers for your video card?
<6> Ko|d; ok, thats more than most will do.
<13> Ko|d: you'll have to read the terms of service you agreed to when you signed up, if they say they can monitor your usage, then you are probably SOL
<12> ah ok, thanks peerce
<11> and a few weeks after that someone sent a cc with like 300 email addresses and the isp freaked and sent them back a nasty email
<6> Ko|d; the commonest reason for a network admin to read email is when they are dealing with spam problems
<6> Ko|d; that may well have been an automatic spam trap. sheesh.
<6> and, yes, CC with 100s of emails is considered rather poor form
<6> use BCC for that.
<13> Are you sure the "nasty email" wasn't just an automated response indicating some filter in their system found spam?
<11> but he sent rude email back to the original sender
<6> it wasn't an automatic response?
<11> no, it was a personal message from him, it was very outrageous response
<13> sue
<13> I doubt he broke any laws
<13> so its a civil matter
<13> of course, I'm not a lawyer, go hire one
<6> I dunno what the statue of limitations on rudeness is, but I have a feeling it ran out circa 1955
<11> he said, 'I'm not surprised this is coming from a goverment person' ....
<11> lol
<11> I'm confused why he can even see the email, if he deleted the box would he even get the email routed to him?
<10> Ko|d: Maybe, maybe not.
<13> mail to your old address could be going into his inbox
<13> and honestly, its not your email address anymore
<11> at the very least I'm guessing he didn't delete the boxes, but yeah they're his anyway
<6> the spam filters may have put it in a quarentine folder, and he was cleaning that out
<13> it ****s, andyou'd think someone running a business would have better ethics than that
<13> but its the real world
<13> and people are unethical
<11> I figured that, but does he have the right to berate the sender?
<6> and responding. I dunno whats such a big deal about that response.
<2> they are?
<11> which is what he did
<6> gummint ***wipes ARE remarkably clueless
<13> Ko|d: I can pick an email address at random and send abusive email to them
<10> Ko|d: He can express his opinion of someone however he wishes, within certain limits.
<2> we elected them?
<2> and we pay them?
<2> ooF
<6> z4m04; hardly. burrowrats, most of them.
<6> been there far longer than our elected/bought representation.
<11> I'd hate to have to apologize for him, it's no wonder we cancelled
<2> peerce: AMELIKA! HOME OF THE FLEA!
<6> sending an email to 300 CC's is *VERY* bad form.
<6> z4m04; nothing is free unless its worthless.
<11> I'm just wondering if ISPs have to answer to anyone besides a courtroom
<6> their stockholders/owners.
<6> they are a business, same as any other.
<11> no doubt peerce
<13> I totally get what you are saying, but the trouble and expense of showing this guy he acted inappropriately probably isn't worth it quite frankly
