<0> gencontrol is essentially vnc - the server side dynamically installs itself via administrative shares
<1> Bumma, it says it only supports NT, 2k, XP and 2k3.
<0> 98 is like 7 years old. time to put it out to the pasture, man.
<0> wait, 8?
<1> Yeah, I hear ya.. my laptop and PC both use XP Pro, but this isn't my box.
<1> The thought of going anywhere 9x disgusts me, lol.
<0> you may as well disgust yourself as much as possible and put ME on that ****heap.
<1> hah. This pile of **** already crashes at least once every two days.
<1> I knew I never used 98 for a reason. Went from 95 -> 2k.
<0> xp seems to handle low resources rather well, it tunes itself... though i wouldnt recommend running under a half gig ram.
<1> I tried is on 128, that was crap. Much better under 256mb or more.
<0> os/x is a real ****ing hog. probably worse then winxp...
<0> but a half gig does it justice.
<0> its worth it. that is one beautiful operating system...
<0> ive got a powerbook running 10.3, its so sweet, it even includes a compiler.
<0> and i want a 10.4 compatible mac :(

<0> hey there bbs
<2> hi guys... i went on vacation for 1 week and let my brother control the computer. now my G:\ drive is "dead", when i try to access it windows tells me "G:\ is not formated, would you like to format now?" and tried to restart but after that it had change volume name to to "Local Drive (C:)" before it was "New Volume (G:)" . I also found a spyware "SpySheriff" hijacked the computer. Anyone know if i can get my data back from the drive easy? :s
<2> Its a 120gb ATA drive, "Maxtor"
<0> i might suggest booting from a BartPE disc to see if you can access any data that way.
<2> Whats a BartPE disc or where could i get one?
<0> !info bartpe
<0> its essentially winxp booting from a cdrom disc
<0> not quite, but thats the jist of it.
<2> mhm ok.
<2> Ill try that then
<2> But this is so strange, how can the drive suddenly just think it is "new" and not formated?
<0> booting from read-only media is handy in the sense that you know for a fact that no malware is loading up and ****ing your system.
<2> This is so typical, i have C: 80 gb , G storage 120gb and recently a new storage 400gb , and i always thinks "damn, C: sounds strange, it might crash i need to backup soon" and now G crashes instead.
<4> yeah
<0> if things are really pooched, i think bartpe should be able to mount usb thumbdrives, you could offload everything you need then format, if it comes to that.
<2> half year of important .raw pictures taken along with text documents and other stuff
<2> z0g^ cool. Ill check it.
<4> no need for the false hope
<4> YOURE ****ED
<0> if suddenly the disk went from operating to wanting to be formatted, that sort of indicates that either the partition table got the hose, or some malware is preventing the disk from being viewed. i tend to think the former.
<0> actually, if the partition table got the hose, there wouldnt be a partition which the OS would want you to format.
<2> yeah, cause i dont remember 100% but i think i access it before i got this tons of hijack **** om my computer
<2> But i guessed there was some "table" telling win if it was "ready for use" or not.
<2> Is that partition table able to restore?
<0> the partition table is essentially a small area of the disk, resident in the MBR, which defines up to four partitions.
<0> if you hosed your partition table, i believe Norton Utilities has a function where it can scan your disk and rebuild the partition table.
<2> hm, ok. but all other applications tried to access the drive has been denied
<2> you think norton utilities can access it anyway?
<5> if a disk loads really slow when loading up windows
<5> what do you think that could be?
<2> sector problem maybe?
<5> hardware error?
<2> yes
<2> But i dont know
<2> I just "guess"
<5> yeah that's what i thought, disk is failing
<2> I had a drive loading really slow, had broken sectors on it
<0> beejay: if your running 2k or xp, id first start at diskmgmt.msc
<5> well it's not even going into windows
<2> z0g^: yeah running xp, whats diskmgmt.msc ? where is it located?
<5> safe mode doesnt work either
<0> look at the disk there. if that doesnt turn up anything interesting, id maybe try something more exotic, like partition magic or acronis.
<0> start -> run -> type "diskmgmt.msc" and hit enter
<0> that can also be found within compmgmt.msc but diskmgmt is more to the point.
<2> ok z0g^ ill try it
<0> you can also right-click "my computer" and select "manage" to get to compmgmt.msc. like so many things in windows, there are likely a dozen ways to do anything.
<2> Ok z0g^: in diskmgmt.msc now. I says "No error (Active)" (in swedish words) and "Free Space: 100%" before i rebooted, windows said it was 1,67gb free.
<2> But nothing else indicates a problem
<2> Except it says its 100% free space
<0> so, diskmgmt is acknowledging a partition on that disk, henceforth its giving you a percentage of free space.
<0> if thats the case, it sounds like its just been formatted or something like that.
<6> hi
<2> z0g^: whaaat :|
<2> how could it have been formated
<2> ;:x
<2> Crap'
<2> If it is formated, windows still says "G is not formated, do you want to format it now?
<0> i dunno, im just speculating right now.
<2> Yeah
<2> If this drive has been formated by any spyware, malware ****, im gonna go crazy on my littlebrother

<0> if youre even seeing a drive letter, that means a partition exists... if no partition existed, you wouldnt see a drive letter.
<2> Its that damn WoW game, its the bottom of all worlds evilness *grr*
<0> what OS are you using?
<2> WinXP Pro
<0> k
<2> OK, hear this:
<0> "echo!"
<7> Didn't hear a thing.
<0> honk
<2> Disc 0: (C:) 74,52 GB NTFS No Error (system)
<2> Disc 1: (G:) 114,48 GB No error (active)
<2> Disc 2: Ny Volym (H:) 372,61 GB NTFS No error (active)
<2> The G drive doesnt state "NTFS" in diskmgmt.msc
<2> that would indicate no partition, wouldnt it?
<0> most spyware, in my experiences, operates somewhat capitalistic. they install **** that serves to generate revenue. If they destroy your system, you cannot generate revenue for them...
<0> The partition could exist, it could perhaps not be recognizable by windows.
<0> if you can get your hands on a Partition Magic bootdisk (cd or floppy) that would be interest6ing to see what it thinks the partition is.
<2> OK, ill get hold of partition magic and make a bootdisk then
<2> z0g^: But no need to get Norton Utilities now ?
<0> doesnt sound like you need norton right now, im guessing...
<2> OK, im trying to fetch partition magic then
<0> though maybe you do... i mean, it could be something so ****ed up as to the partition type in the MBR is incorrect and maybe you might need to wipe and rebuild the partition table. ive never seen that in my life, but every day i see new ****...
<0> just when you think you know everything, leave it to computers to prove you wrong.
<2> hehe
<2> My first guess was cableproblem, my second guess was MBR record screwed
<2> Will all data be lost if i wipe and rebuild partition table?
<0> depends... norton can rebuild it...
<0> what i'd do, to be on the safe side, get another hard disk of the exact same size, use something like partition magic to dupe it, then work on the copy.
<7> I am in concurance with the z0gster.
<0> cause i am so smart. SMRT!
<8> sure..
<8> ;)
<7> Or maybe you're just lucky.
<9> http://gregsegg.blogspot.com/
<9> who is that?
<8> Great, my ISps DNS is screwed.
<2> z0g^: why the exact same size of the other drive?
<2> i only have a 400gb that i can dupe to
<2> <@z0g^> depends... norton can rebuild it...
<2> by that you mean norton partition magic?
<8> Thats what he meant.
<8> Arconis has a stronger product though.
<2> Dovinshka: yeah?
<8> yup
<10> what would be an effective way to quiet an external hard drive?
<11> hello
<11> Anyone here have a second ? I am looking for a certain driver and cannot seem to find it
<11> I would appreicate a couple minutes of sometimes time
<12> how do i block a process from operating
<12> *?
<13> MaJM
<12> ?
<14> :name ****ed :P
<13> control panel > administrative tools > Services > and then set the options for the particular process
<14> ah..
<14> but the process is actually a virus
<14> pretending to be iexplore.exe
<13> hijackthis download it
<14> it's the vundo trojan. some new variant called vundo.aq
<14> of course! im an idiot for not thinking of it :P
<14> thanks
<13> and figure out where the virus is being stored, and possible get rid of it manually
<13> otherwise you can use an online virus checker
<13> trendmicrohousecall.trendmicro.com/
<13> hope that helps.
<14> yea it's not actually a known virus yet :(
<14> thanks, it does :_)
<13> Enoy your day.
