<3> imashane: This may be slightly off topic but what business does a user have starting and stopping a service in the first place?
<3> z0g^^: ? you around
<1> Well, its actually for a program i'm writing, i want my prog to start my service, but the service needs to have admin rights
<1> If its possible, i'd like to give a group start/stop permission on my service
<3> how about using rpc so your processes can talk to each other.
<0> imashane, might be better off having the servie start @ boot time.
<3> You would have the one, unprivilaged control process.
<3> which would jhust connect back to the administrative one
<1> How do you get the administrative process to start when logged in as a user?
<0> imashane, http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=225035
<4> **** the french

<5> i have a P4 2.4GHZ FSB 533MHZ,intel 865PERL motherboard, 1GB PC3200 ram, radeon 9800 (128 bit) with 256mb. I was wondering what on my system would i need to upgrade to get a good system to play the latest 3d games with a decent quality and framerate?
<3> Whoops.
<1> Here is the problem I'm running into. I want to my program to be able to access files/folders that a user wouldnt normally be able to (such as c:\ windows), I want the user to be able to run my program (not knowing the admin p***word). Its fine (prolly required) if the admin has to install the program.
<6> <cough>
<5> what was that about
<3> Alexi5: Your nickname looked like a spambot nickname.
<5> ok
<7> I certainly hope that a program running as a user can never start tasks as administrator without the administrator p***word

<3> Alexi5: that's pretty good as it is
<3> are you experiencing troubles? just turn down some shading and lighting effects and you should be just fine
<3> my system has lower specs than yours does and it still runs the recent games just fine
<1> But is it possible to make a user be able to start system service?
<8> hey check out these new forums www.mainestacks.com free game accounts & giveaways help the community grow!
<3> OMG letse go.
<3> imashane: No sir
<3> Why does the user have to have write access to c:\windows
<3> that sounds like bad coding to me.
<7> its 2006, Vista with LUA is just around the corner
<1> Its kind of a replacement to the RunAs command, I have some programs that wont work without access to c:\windows (and yes that was bad coding). I'm trying to allow users in my lab to use those programs without being administrator
<7> and people are still writing **** that has to write to %SystemRoot%
<9> hi there
<3> write better code
<9> anyone know how can i crack an evaluation copy of iwndows?
<4> lafff
<7> anyone know where to trade an eval copy of windows for crack?
<3> Google Talk updates.
<3> why do i even run this!
<10> (_!_)
<10> "because you're an idiot."
<3> i won't debate that!
<7> this is IRC, its "because YOUR a idiot!"
<3> grr...
<3> Yahoo music unlimited is only playing 30 second samples.
<10> haven't you people ever seen heathers?
<3> I'm paying for full songs.
<3> This is not good
<7> run gaim or tri-lion
<6> ok I got hawk's cell #
<6> I need one more for good measure
<6> in case I get jacked on the way there or some ****
<11> man I just do not understand this. I have asp script timeouts set to 120 on the remote admin website, but after about 20 seconds it kicks me to the timeout page after which it's immediately all i can reach
<12> fawk, WoW's webpile has been offline all day. my kid is climbing the walls and driving me crazy.
<11> Your session on the Administration Web site for 192.168.20.1 might have expired, or you might have opened this page without first opening the default home page
<11> click on the https link in the page, and it immediately takes me right back to that page.
<13> cookies disabled?
<11> sec
<6> server running in a vmware session that's making the clock run at twice speed?
<14> word up ****ers :)
<6> BeOS ****s
<11> nope it's in the allowed sites list. and no I'm running win2k3 natively
<13> beos does ****
<11> it starts to load the damn Default.asp page, then immediately kicks to the inc_pagekey.asp
<11> and it's listed in Trusted Sites
<15> basically the program crashed and overwritten the old file with a new blank file with same name
<15> what program can inspect a directory and find recovers the data sectors ?
<15> i opened up the file its blank
<15> when it should have data
<13> mofaker: what ****ing program
<15> what do i do
<15> it's a notes program

<6> restore from backup
<15> didnt back up
<15> i just created it yesterday
<7> just using your computer is likely to have overwritten the data, but you can try something you find at http://www.google.ca/search?q=undelete+ntfs
<7> of course, using your browser is likely to overwrite the data
<12> mofaker; the data sectors aren't in the directory.
<12> how big is your disk?
<15> 60 gb
<15> the problem is i cannot undelete it
<12> so you got, um, 120 million sectors to examine
<15> cuz the filename is overwritten
<15> but i am sure the data sectors are not
<12> why are you sure?
<12> windows is writing crap all the time.
<12> logfiles and stuff
<15> but, if the file index headers been overwritten, i am afraid the data sectors are lost
<12> free sectors get reused quite quickly
<15> if the headers been overwritten with a new filename , the pointer is gone , right?
<15> so the data is there but lost
<12> indeed.
<12> how much of that 60GB is free space?
<15> 400mb free
<12> oh, cool, so you only have 800 thousand sectors to examine. actually, its probably 4K blocks, so you have 100K blocks. thats almost, um, easy.
<12> snicker.
<15> i am screwed, there are 14 million clusters on my disk
<7> you are screwed
<3> open it up in gvim
<3> get started
<6> restore from backup
<14> jet.. you hear me?
<12> this file WAS larger than 2K, right?
<15> how do i know what clusters to scan?
<12> small files aren't written into blocks at all.
<7> azure: I will now
<15> no the file is like 1kb size
<12> small files on NTFS are stored in the MFT metadata, which almost CERTAINLY has been overwritten.
<12> whooops.
<15> just a simple notes file with text
<15> ****
<15> wtf am i goin to do
<6> restore from backup
<15> heh i have 600 min left for my cluster scan
<12> hey, only 10 hours!
<15> 800 min
<12> ok, 12.
<15> it found 150 files so far
<7> wait 10-12 hours, then restore from backup when it doesn't find anything
<15> it scanned 3 mil clusters already
<16> KORKS IN SHORTS.
<12> it should only have to scan free clusters
<15> mostly just temp internet files
<15> damn
<7> is it scanning unallocated sectors too?
<15> it scanned the dir where my file was
<15> didnt find ****
<15> ****
<17> Is there a way to be somewhat secure and install activex on my browser?
<12> directories don't contain files.
<16> OH GAWD.
<12> mikefoo; if you're patched and up to date, activeX is reasonably secure if you don't install unsigned controls from unknown sources.
<7> mofaker: the file is GONE, "scanning the directory where the file is" involves opening the clusters ***igned to the files identified in the directory
<12> its just as secure as downloading plugins for other browsers
<17> well yeah i don't but I don't keep up-to-date on what can be installed via activex behind the scenes and such
<7> if the file isn't THERE, that cluster scanner won't do ****
<12> mikefoo: just keep your system up to date with http://update.microsoft.com/ and the latest service packs and post-SP fixes and it should be fine.
<17> ahh ok will try
<15> mikefoo ?
<7> mikefoo: disable ActiveX in the Internet zone, put the sites you trust and want to use ActiveX in the Trusted Zones site
<15> foobar
<12> thats another approach
<11> there's only one security hole right now that I know of that is not patched in IE. all you need to do is disable Active Scripting until "Patch Tuesday"
<12> I also recommend Microsoft Defender (beta) as spyware protection
<18> is it normal for windows to display the shutdown prompt after killing svchost services?
<12> !info defender
