<0> wilburs5; do you use user accounts with blank/null p***words ?
<1> and what users do you have on the other machine?
<2> yes
<2> administrator
<3> the path of ntfs is /dev/sda 1 on /mnt/sda1 type ntfs
<0> thats the problem. null p***words aren't allowed for network connections.
<3> that's what it says
<0> sill3; type `cd /mnt/sda1/windows/system32`
<0> then type `ls -l ntdll*`
<1> peerce: that's not true. my office used to use blank p***words :(
<4> Aurelius - by default, XP does not allow it
<1> rookies
<0> Aurelius; they may have overridden the default system local security policies
<0> or it was win2000
<2> ok, so i have two computers, both running through a lynksys router, both logged on as owner , no p***words, what do i change
<4> servers don't have any such limitation by defualt

<0> wilburs5: set the same p***word on both `owner` accounts.
<3> ok what is the ls -l ntdll*
<2> you mean through the account setting in windows?
<0> thats a `dir` command in unix
<1> lists the files
<1> similar to dir
<3> ok
<5> sill3: Why are you learning Linux in here?
<0> wilburs5; or ctl-alt-del, 'change p***word'.
<1> peerce: he probably doesn't have security if he's using no p***words
<3> ok, it found the file i renamed last night
<4> ctrl-alt-del defaults to bringing up task manager on machines with the ugly welcome screen
<3> it is named ntdll.old
<2> i see task manager only when i hit those keys
<4> see :)
<1> hehe
<3> i'm not learning linux. i'm trying to repair my XP system
<1> sill3: ls -ld .
<0> sill3; `mv ntdll.old ntdll.mv`
<0> [mv for move is unix's rename command]
<0> er, crap..
<0> brainfart.
<0> sill3; `mv ntdll.old ntdll.dll`
<1> hehe
<3> move?
<3> i just need to rename it to ntdll.dll
<1> mv == ren
<3> oh
<2> any answers
<4> unix doesn't have ren or rename. when you think about it, renaming a file is just moving it to the same place with a new name :)
<2> yes, it syas permission denied
<3> oh
<4> wilburs5 - change it in control panel, user management or whatever
<2> p***word?
<0> wilburs5; ok, then yeah, use controlpanel -> Users
<2> ok
<0> set the same p***word for the same username on both computers
<2> the usernames dont have to be the same do they?
<3> it won't let me mv the file.
<1> sill3: ls -ld .
<3> it says operation not permitted
<0> sill3; what error?
<1> erm
<0> sill3; then that NTFS isn't really readwrite, tahts my guess.
<3> i didn't type in ls -ld
<0> ls -ld just lists directoryies, whatever
<1> just wanted to check
<1> see the perms on the wd
<4> wilburs5 - yes, they should be the same
<4> if they're not, then you want to add a user on each computer with the same username and p***word as the other computer
<3> is this the norm with XP?
<3> so much security??
<1> sill3: please try `ls -ld .` where yer at
<3> ok
<1> what are the perms on .
<0> !google linux writable ntfs
<6> http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-34046.html
<3> ls -ld returns root@slax:/mnt/sda1/windows/system32#
<1> you don't get anything?
<1> that's not good

<0> what version of linux is this you're using?
<7> eh?
<1> type `uname -sr`1
<7> afaik ntfs isnt writable under linux. but maybe things have changed since i last checked. have they?
<1> err, not the 1
<2> ok, so my user account is administrator, user name wilburs5?
<1> i thought ntfs was
<1> but i haven't used linux in a while... i tend to stay with fbsd
<3> i dont' know what version. i just downloaded it. so it is quite recent.
<1> sill3: `uname -sr`
<0> `uname -a`
<1> or -a
<1> either way
<8> so. i kinda messed up with my dell inspiron 600m that i got just today, i want to return the system to its original factory configuration, how is that done?
<1> MarEakin: does it come with a recovery cd?
<0> MarEakin; should have come with re-installation instructions, and CDs
<7> i sure as hell wish there was a ntfs linux driver that could write, because we utilize linux pretty heavily at work, but do post-processing of data on windows boxen, and use SCSI drive sleds to move data back and forth. But the poor performance and 4gb filesize limit of fat32 really blows.
<3> ok
<8> there are no restore Cd's...
<9> Hi has anyone set up SFTP using public key authentication before?
<1> z0g^g: why not use fcal?
<7> when we finally go gigabit ethernet this wont be a problem
<3> ok
<1> or san?
<2> alrighty, im gonna go mess around witht he settings, thanks for being so cool
<7> but at the moment were all 100baseT
<1> oh
<1> nm :)
<1> poor you
<0> http://wiki.linux-ntfs.org/doku.php?id=ntfs-en#3.2_can_the_driver_write_to_an_ntfs_volume_too <-- sill please read that)
<10> z0g^g: i think it can, but you have to read around on how to enable it
<7> we've priced it out. a couple 48 port gig switches and gig nics for all machines that dont have it already integrated, about $15,000 estimated. not too bad.
<3> thanks peerce
<1> z0g^g: how many machines?
<7> only about 60 actual machines but plenty of jacks throughout the office to facilitate more
<1> our company doesn't do much networking, so i just went with a cheapo hp
<1> 250
<1> err, 2650
<7> we use HP Procurve rackmount units now. Very nice nice units. No complaints. We'd definitely go with HP again
<7> 4000 series iirc
<1> gave the dc's the gige lines
<1> we have only about 38 network jacks
<1> :)
<7> we have a gig line linking the two switches, then 100 on each port
<7> is bay networks still around?
<1> dunno
<11> not really
<7> we have some old-as-dirt baystacks that we still throw around the office when we need more then one port in an office :D
<1> but i do have a 6500 from bay sitting in my daughter's future bedroom
<1> hehe
<7> Pretty funny, cause they used to cost thousands of dollars. Now we use them where most people would just use some cheap $20 linksys. its funny.
<0> http://www.netgear.com/products/details/GSM7248.php 48 port pure gigabit, 4 ports with optical whazzits sockets, layer 2 managed, about $1300
<1> we just throw linksys 8 ports out :)
<1> gbic?
<0> SFP
<0> thats it.
<1> oh
<1> the mini ones
<7> that is a pretty nice switch. i dunno about netgear management though, never dealt with it. HP Procurves are pretty bad*** i know that much
<0> thats what everyone is using now, even the big*** IBM unix server we evaluated had SFP on its fiberchannel switches and SAN ports
<1> yeah
<0> z0g^g; its pretty straight forward. has a telnet interface, a web interface, and SNMP
<3> looks like i am screwed
<1> peerce: last time i was using fiber gigE/10gigE was a number of years ago with big cisco's
<3> maybe it was time for a clean install anyway.
<3> thanks a million for all your help
<1> all we had were gbics back then
<0> sill3; agian, a XP recovery console will do that easily.
<3> ok.
<0> win32 command line like prompt. `cd \windows\system32` then `ren file.old file.dll` or whatever
<3> i can't get to a command prompt
<1> with xp recovery console?
<0> THE WINDOWS RECOVERY CONSOLE
<0> geezus.
