<0> ok so <1> You could. <2> and you gotta pay $15/month to play? <1> There's low-level PVP as well. <0> for research/manufacure do you need facilities <1> Chez: Most MMOGs have monthly fees. Guild Wars is the only major one that doesn't, to my knowledge. <1> Gimp-Work: Right. <0> or can you use some kinda common space <0> ok so i can't make **** <0> unless i'm in a corp <3> galactic civilizations II is pretty cool <1> Gimp-Work: Facilities exist both in POSes, or in NPC bases. <2> Gah, looks like ever entertaning MMOGs are heading out of my price range :( <0> ah, ok <3> i bought it the other day <0> fdiv, is the game itself free
<1> They're more expensive in NPC bases, overall, just like renting is more expensive than buying in the long-term. <3> i love colonizing planets and building ships <1> Gimp-Work: I believe so, yes. <3> it's like 3d tradewars <0> :P <1> nerp: So is EVE. <0> yeah nerp, that's what it sounds like <0> oh <0> nm <1> Gimp-Work: There is not. <4> in eve, there's only one 'realm' that ALL players are in. <1> The system that CCP uses is a large IBM BladeCenter LS20 cluster, with a RAMSAN-400 or two for database storage. <0> i think i might like this <0> i dunno <4> unlike, say, WoW, where there's 100s of independent realm servers <1> Trying to run a "hacked server" on a Linux box would be foolishly impossible. <1> peerce: Yeah, that's one thing I really like about EVE. <1> We're all in the same shard. <0> well fdiv the only server emulators i've seen, **** *** <1> So there's one economy, one player base, one location for events. <0> aka for WOW <1> I think the UO ones aren't bad, by now. <0> maybe <1> But, EVE has a learning curve. A steep one. <0> i'd think everquest I would be the best off <0> do i need to dig out the joystick? <1> It's not as easy to get into as the other games, but the level of freedom is like none other. <1> No. <4> my kid's WoW raiding guild finally killed the 10th boss in Molton Core friday night. <1> It's all mouse- and click-based. <0> ah <0> so no POV combat kinda **** <1> peerce: Which would be how many times that boss has been killed? <1> Gimp-Work: Correct. <0> fdiv, the 10th boss in the particular "instance" or area <4> fdiv_bug; sure, each raid party is seperate instance <4> Molten Core has 10 'bosses' you gotta beat to complete the raid. <1> peerce: By point of reference, Phoenix Alliance (PA) and The Five (.5.) are having a war in the northern sectors of space in EVE. The Five just took one of PA's original sectors, that they've held for a very, very long time. <5> panty raid? <0> fdiv do ships need maintence <0> like <1> There's only one such sector. It's under one alliance's control at a time. <0> if i just leave it in a hanger is it gonna rust or something <1> How can you feel you're accomplishing something cool in a game world when you're the 50th person to do it? <1> Gimp-Work: Nope. <1> Ships and equipment only require repair when they get damaged in combat. <0> what race are you <1> Gimp-Work: I actually just rolled a new Gallente last night, but race isn't that important. <1> Gimp-Work: http://www.eve-offline.net <1> Hit the "Character Creator" link in left-hand menu bar. <1> There's also the items database on the official site. <0> lol <0> titan's are expensive <1> What kind of character do you think you'd like? <1> What roles? <0> 60,699,805,800.00 base price <0> lol <4> fdiv_bug; better, they will do it again and again now that they have the equipment and skills to do it, so they can collect more high level armor.... MC takes 40 players on a raiding party, and the 10th boss only drops a dozen or so pieces. so for everyone on the guild to load up with armor etc, they'll have to hit it at least a dozen times. <0> i dunno fdiv <0> i like making ****
<0> i might do mining to start with <0> or cargo runs or something <1> peerce: See, that to me makes the accomlishment nearly meaningless and completely out of line with the "RP" in "MMORPG." <1> WoW is a perfect example of how to do "derivative" better than anyone else. <4> yeah, WoW is more like m***ively multiplayer Diablo :D <1> Gimp-Work: Then pick a character you like. For what it's worth, I like the Gallente and Amarr ships better than others in terms of looks. <0> interesting character creator <1> You really can't paint yourself into a corner with your character in EVE, so long as your attributes are decent (and if you do your best to balance them, then you'll be fine). <1> All skills can be acquired by all characters. That's not to say you can train everything, but unlike other games if you start out with one character idea and realize you'd like to change directions or specialize later you won't necessarily have to re-roll. <1> I also love the offline skill training idea. Always keep a skill in training. Always. <1> Even if it's something you don't think you'll use. <1> Coz it keeps training when you're offline. <4> didn't I read in Eve that character levels are strictly about time subscribed and not actual time played ? <0> yeah <1> That helps to balance out the fact that I don't have 14 hours a day to play. No matter how much time you have to play, if you do your skill training right you'll advance as quickly as everyone else doing their skill training right. <3> Mac OS X hacked in less than 30 minutes http://networks.org/?src=cnet:2100-1002_3-6046197 <0> ? <1> peerce: Sorta. Training a given skill to another level takes however many days, hours, minutes, and/or seconds. This countdown keeps going even if you're not online. <1> Some of the highest of the high-end skills can literally take a week to train. <0> oh <0> can it run in a window? <4> heh. "The only thing which has kept Mac OS X relatively safe up until now is the fact that the market share is significantly lower than that of Microsoft Windows or the more common Unix platforms...If this situation was to change, in my opinion, things could be a lot worse on Mac OS X than they currently are on other operating systems" <1> Gimp-Work: Yep. <0> good <1> It also (supposedly) supports dual-head. <6> let me guess his ftp service was open <0> heh we'll find out <1> So you can have windows spread all over the place. <0> ian_, stock config <0> oh it's not modal <6> Gimp-Work: how did they guy exploit him, do t hey say? <0> that's hot <0> ian_, unpublished exploits <6> so they dont <6> weak <0> buffer exploits for sure <6> yeah but i wonder on what <0> well <6> damn leet hackers and their secrets <0> figure out roughly what build of bsd osx is based off of <0> and then look at bsd vulns <6> well its a gnu userland <6> err <6> yea, nevermind. <0> i'm sure they share some <6> bsd userland, gnu apps <6> they could just look at specs pages to see what versions of what services there are <7> I got a bluetooth dongle I'm using to connect to BT pda <0> ian_, yeah <7> I got the BT p***key for the pda <0> i mean the code would even be the same <8> Hmmm, I do like the sound of this EVE ... sadly my budget won't allow for any MMO monthly fees right now. <0> roughly <0> cause it's x86 now :P <1> Hawkeye: Yeah, I was thinking of pitching EVE to you in your current game slump. <1> Lemme check something real quick. <6> Gimp-Work: ahh, i bet that helped <0> yeah more or less, just the length of the overflow would have to be altered heh <7> but the pda is asking for the p***key for my laptop <7> which was ne'er set <1> Yeah, the Buddy Program is currently kinda useless since it's the same 14-day trial everyone gets. <1> I was hoping it'd be a month-long trial or something and I could toss out links to you two. <0> i'll see if i like it <0> 14 days is enough to tell <1> Gimp-Work: Sorta. <0> enough to tell to shell out for a few months <8> fdiv_bug, 14 days tho ... might be long enough for my budget to come around. <1> EVE is so vast that you have a ****load of options. Far more than in other game.s <7> so anyone got any suggestions <0> if i had to actually _buy_ the game, it would be a harder choice <8> I'll thinka about it. <0> trollboy, try 1234 <1> Hawkeye: Give it a shot. I think it's worth a look, at least. <8> fdiv_bug, but how much am I going to bitch considering my vid card is only a MX440 64m?
