<0> !info autoruns <0> t3rmi: check that out <0> autoruns covers MANY more bases then msconfig <1> da-drew, try running a few diagnostic tests like memory and hard disk. <2> z0g thx <3> that autoruns reads interesting. <1> !info memtest86 <1> Ah crap, it dc'ed. <0> !info memtest86 <1> And for hard drive, go to your manufacturers webpage, or you can still use Seagates Seatools ;) <4> all of these programs you guys endorse are unobtrusive and spyware free right <0> For a real hard disk torture test, build a bartpe cdrom with Bart's Stuff Test. let that thing run all weekend. <1> Correct. <0> thats hell on a hard disk
<1> da-drew, memtest runs on a floppy. <4> i dont have a floppy drive, guess i'd have to put it on my jump drive and change the boot sequence <4> or burn it to a cd <0> we'd never recommend anything that came bundled with adware. that **** is garbage. there is always a better alternative. <0> There is an iso image for memtest86 <0> for booting off a cd <1> z0g^sn, ISA is basically an in-depth firewall and proxy server. The replacement to what MS Proxy Server used to be. <4> sweet <4> i'll have to give it a whirl tonight <5> I have a rather weird problem with graphics. When I perform certain operations, like mousing over animated GIFs in Firefox or selecting large regions in Paint Shop Pro, I get a lot of CPU usage and things become jerky. This behaviour doesn't occur when I change performance to disable all but basic hardware accelerations. I'm thinking this may be a faulty graphics card - any ideas? <1> The best thing about it, of course is application blocking on an enterprise level (domain/forest wide). <1> jez, hard to say. Have you tested for spyware? <0> one thing i wish was integrated into windows via gpo was application-level security. where you can designate certain apps to run in a certain security context (ie local admin). without granting the user that right. <0> there is an app out there which will do that. but i wish it was integrated. <1> Oh, and what applicatioon is utilizing the cpu? <4> jez: im having the same issue on a much smaller scale (possibly because i have 1.5gb ram), and my computer is completely clean of all spyware and unncessary programs <1> z0g^sn, hence the requirement to purchase additional licensing for ISA :P <5> Dovinshka: there isn't spyware on this system <4> jez: you arent keeping the web developer plugin active for firefox are you? <5> it's not just FF, it's paint shop pro too <0> video drivers? <5> i think it's a certain graphics operation/acceleration that's not working well <4> yea im having isssues with photoshop <5> video drivers.... hmm. <5> i could try updating them <4> its probably your vid card, i think thats my issue too <5> if there is an update <1> Or, if they are already updated, you can try rolling back too. <4> i just downloaded brand new drivers yesterday to no avail <0> is it ATI? <4> yes <5> z0g^sn: nope, nVidia geforce3 ti200 <5> bit of an old thing now but still going :-) <1> I have a GF3. <1> Works like a harm. <1> *Charm. <4> i have hte dell onboard video card and an ATI raden 9250 256 regular PCI vid card (just so i can have 3 monitors) <5> i disconnected the heatsink fan because it was rubbing and being noisy, still seems fine :-) <1> ... <4> im ***uming everything will be just dandy once i finally throw down on a bad *** pci express card <0> i love geforces. i hate ATI but only because their drivers blow. Their hardware is fine. Their drivers blow. <5> it was probably just generating more heat with the rubbing <1> Get a replacement fan. Looking for trouble otherwise. <4> is there a way to make a specific monitor display grayscale? <4> 24 bit grayscale <1> Ewww. <1> That would totally depend on the video drivers. <0> sure. modify a 15-pin analog video cable to shunt the R, G, and B lines <1> Or.. you can turn down the colour on your monitor ;) <4> the problem is this monitor looks like its wearing blue sungl***es <4> and it flickers to bright blue at times <4> which burns the hell out of my eyes when im looking at the other monitors <6> hello <0> if you wiggle cables, does it sometimes come back into normality? if so, could be a cold solder joint. <1> **** it's late, night. <4> no, will go back to its normal faded blue state if i smack the **** out of it though <4> its been like this for years, the conenctions are good on it <4> i think i oughta take this mofo out back like old yeller and put it out of its misery <6> Can someone give me a hand please? Running XP Pro SP2, when I launch IE, it displays a blank page, which is fine. But then if type like www.google.com, the IE window stays there, but it opens Firefox and Firefox to google. If I open start -> run -> iexplore google.com then Google will load in IE. How can I fix this problem? I use Firefox for basically everything.. but still need IE for some stuff. <0> if smacking it changes things, that tells me something mechanical is wrong. ie. bad solder joint. very common. easy to fix. dis***emble and find bad joint, heat with iron to reflow solder. <5> Dovinshka: a replacement tiny fan for the graphics card when the existing one seems to be unremovable? nah, i'll just wait till the card dies and buy a new one
<5> its lasted a few months so far <4> jez: that could be very dangerous <4> you dont want to harm your motherboard <5> how would it do that? <5> it's just one measly fan <4> i dont know, just doesnt seem safe <4> fans are cheap as hell <4> you can order one for like 2 bucks <0> wait a sec. tell me if im reading this wrong here. you disconnected the fan on your graphics card? <4> http://www.woot.com/ has nothin but **** on the weekends. <5> yep! <4> yes z0g and he's waiting for his video card to fry... i think he may have a few wires disconnected himself <5> many cards dont even have a fan <0> ok.. just getting that straight here. <0> i dont think thats a wise idea. <5> given that the card's still alive, im guessing that fan was unnecessary <4> well yours has a fan for a reason <5> and the fan was rubbing and making noise <7> did someone say milkshake <5> anyway if it's so necessary why is it plugged in with a removeable plug? <4> at least open the case up and create some airflow have a fan blow on it from the outside til you get your new card <5> im waiting for this one to die. <5> :-) <0> ive seen some cards, like geforce 2 ultras, with siezed fans, and they manage to run fine, but like, take a radeon 9800 or geforce 5-series or greater and disconnect its fan, its gonna FRY. <8> found a weblog about kyra byron :) :) :) <8> drooooool <5> z0g^sn: this card is years old, it's a geforce3. i think it's ok with just a heatsink <9> my milk shake brings all the boys the yard, and their like its better than yours, damn right its better than yours, I could teach you but I'd have to charge <0> my geforce 6800 has a m***ive heatsink attached to it. even with that, it manages to pump out uber-heat when running some demos. <4> im looking for a 16x pci express card in the ~150$ range, it needs to have dual monitor support, the sapphire has seemed like the best one in this price range so far, does anyone have any ideas <0> i cant imagine it surviving long without the fan <8> what are the minimum requirements for vista media center edition to perform withouth any trouble? <5> but a geforce 6800 takes a lot more power than a geforce3, doesn't it <0> !google andromeda planet risk <10> http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13032 <0> check out that demo. that will bring your graphics card to its knees <0> jez: well yea. <0> but theres tons of eye candy in that demo. worth a download and watch. <5> z0g^sn: hehe, ok. should be a laugh <0> it manages to get my 6800 pumping hotter then any game. all its effects are primarily in shaders, its almost all gpu <3> hmn, weird. <5> still, if i cant display detailed models of the Andromeda galaxy, i'm not too worried. it's not the kind of thing I need to do on a daily... yearly... or once-in-a-lifetime basis. <3> jez -hah <0> eh its nothing to do with galaxies. just some cheezy demo. <5> LOL <5> "Graphics card does not support fragment programs." <4> anyone have a vid card suggestion for me based on my previous statement? (i work mostly in photoshop, little to no gaming) <0> no ****. wont run on a gf3? <5> nope <0> wild. must be doing some heavy duty stuff. <5> although i thought you could force DX emulation <5> o well <5> ok im off to install some new graphics drivers. bbs. <11> http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=335866&cm_ven=chth_em&cm_cat=em_030506&cm_pla=cusa_cc&cm_ite=335866&cm_cmem=jclaggett@cfl.rr.com <11> Nice deal except that its PATA <0> who cares. seagate. 5 year. and just use it to store ****. <11> Mornin' <11> You're up early again. <0> mornin. <0> yeh. <11> Only reason I am is because I have brunch plans. <0> the discwizard **** that seagate bundles is trash. <11> $14.95 all you can eat. With an unlimited mimosa bar. <0> i helped a buddy install a seagate drive into his pc. the pc could only hold one hard disk (uber-cheap dell). had to transfer contents of old disk to new. discwizard was trash. i opted to drive to work and snag Acronis. <0> mimosa! <0> when i was in vegas for CES, our hotel had complimentary mimosa breakfast. <11> Yeah, I figure I'll be well and trashed by noon. <0> hehe. they get you started drinking early :D <0> that entire weekend was an alcoholic haze. <0> quite fun. i wish you could have made it. <11> Oh well. <0> next year! :D hey the porn convention runs concurrent with ces too. <12> Is it possible to download google videos to your PC and view em offline? Does that work? <5> Yay, it worked! The latest version of the nVidia display drivers seem to have fixed the problems :-)
