<0> bando, actualy the first one performs better, but they also have better bandwidth
<1> 11 packets transmitted, 11 packets received, 0% packet loss
<1> round-trip min/avg/max/mdev = 11.453/12.041/13.425/0.543 ms
<2> I have an athlon64 3200+, 1GB ram....would upgrding to an athlon64 x2 give me a lot of help, even if some of my apps are not multi-threaded?
<0> mdev of .5 is hella good
<3> peerce, what other ip can i ping
<1> jag111; do you run more than one thing at a time? like do DVD encoding/ripping in the background ?
<3> to see if it responds
<4> From what you pasted, I see a 10ms jitter
<1> dankid; any IP you want, I don't care.
<2> peerce: sometimes yeah
<0> 1 sec...
<1> jag111; it will help a lot during those times. other times, it might be minimal.
<0> 28 packets transmitted, 28 received, 0% packet loss, time 27091ms
<0> rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 21.307/24.447/51.624/6.120 ms
<2> would it actually be worse for like single threaded apps?

<0> 45 packets transmitted, 45 received, 0% packet loss, time 44180ms
<0> rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 10.818/16.097/31.204/3.823 ms
<4> ouch, 30
<2> i heard someone say that
<3> is there any way i can tell if its the router or the modem?
<1> jag111; is it a slower clock speed?
<4> warflyr: That'd be awful for voip
<2> well i have a 3200+ now
<0> mdev of 2 is hella good as far as i am concered
<2> id prolly upgrade to a 3800+ x2
<1> jag111; that number is nearly meaningless. whats the clock speed of that 3200+ ? 2.4Ghz ?
<5> dankid: On your Router's configuration page, look for the Default Gateway IP. This is the IP address on the OTHER side of the connection between your house and Roadrunner. It's Roadrunner's router at their end. Next time the Internet is broke, try pinging THAT IP address. If it works, the problem is on Roadrunner's end. If it does not work, the problem is in between you and Roadrunner.
<4> jitter kills anything that requires realtime communication
<5> That's all you really need
<2> ill check...
<2> not even sure
<0> peerce, what are you on? mdev is .5 is rare for cable/dsl
<5> peerce said that
<1> warflyr; thats my DSL.
<0> pretty good connection, must be somewhat close to the co
<5> no fiber here yet
<3> ah ic
<1> not really. and CO distance is almost immaterial with DSL ping speeds, more important is the PVC to the ISP's head
<2> peerce: current clockspeed on 3200 - 2.0 GHz
<3> ok now if it is between me and road runner
<3> could it be my router, and if it is, how could i tell?
<5> dankid If it's between you and roadrunner, then it could be your computer, your router, or your cable modem, or the cable running to the wall, or the cable running from your house to your Cable company.
<1> anyways, it varies wildly with what traffic is on my circuit, I run a bunch of servers here, email, dns for 50+ domains, a bunch of websites. latest 10 pings came back...
<1> 10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
<2> clockspeed on 3800 x2: 2.0 ghz
<1> round-trip min/avg/max/mdev = 10.753/16.202/54.723/12.856 ms
<5> You can tell whether it is your router or not by connecting your computer directly to the cable modem
<0> dankid, i doubt its your router, id bitch at your ISP and tell them to fix your connection
<5> byp***ing the router
<1> jag111; ok, so the X2 should be just as fast single threaded, and a lot faster running multiple concurrent processes.
<0> peerce is that a dif connection?
<3> true true
<2> and MUCH faster when running multithreaded apps?
<1> warflyr; you have a reading comprehension problem?
<5> And the CORRECT PROCEDURE for transferring from ROUTER Based connection to a DIRECT connection is: SHUT DOWN ROUTER, THEN UNPLUG, RESET CABLE MODEM, PLUG COMPUTER IN TO CABLE MODEM, RESTART COMPUTER
<0> ?
<0> ohh.. missed a line
<1> I said... [13:22] <+peerce> anyways, it varies wildly with what traffic is on my circuit, I run a bunch of servers here, email, dns for 50+ domains, a bunch of websites.
<5> to GO BACK, you SHUT DOWN COMPUTER, RESET CABLE MODEM, PUT ROUTER BACK, start router
<5> If you do not follow that exactly, your troubleshooting results will be skewed and you will still not have an answer
<1> all it takes is someone hitting one of my web pages to knock ping times around
<0> DNS is a pos on ping times
<4> restart computer to change ISP?
<4> wtf?
<1> 10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
<1> round-trip min/avg/max/mdev = 10.782/29.604/140.024/38.079 ms
<0> not neccesarily, but also on bandwidth
<5> bando: You aren't reading entire converstations.
<4> peerce: That's horrible
<4> FKnight`: of course not...why would I do that?
<1> DNS is almost no impact on my pings, its my webserver and email servers that are the heavier load
<5> because it's necessary to do so before commenting on them
<4> FKnight`: no it isn't
<1> I have some mail lists hosted here with 1000 subscribers
<0> i cant imagine running bind/whatever you run on a async connection
<1> its SDSL, not 'async' (btw, ADSL is asymmetric, not asynchronous)

<5> bando: For your information, I was describing an exact fool-proof procedure for the proper recycling of cached DHCP and lease information in cable modems when switching out your router for a direct connect PC and vice-versa to avoid troubleshooting problems.
<1> DNS has very little impact on my traffic.
<3> thanks guys
<4> you silly windows guys
<4> always say reboot
<3> windows was made for rebooting
<3> hah
<1> bando is a ****ing troll.
<5> bando: Cable modems need to be reset when switching out your edge device regardless of OS, bando
<3> hah
<1> same troll as 'rando' last night
<6> I wonder if bando is the guy who was called rando yesterday.
<1> same host
<6> peerce: Was it? Unsurprising.
<0> hmm.... id say bind causes more overhead on my server than anything
<1> DNS packets tend to be very short UDP, should be very minimal traffic load
<3> im 99.9% sure its not my router, ive had the same set up for over 2 years and have had 0 problems
<0> except mailman, which works with exim--and is scanning email all the ****ing time
<3> so i guess i wait till it shuts off again
<5> dankid: Except for 15 minutes ago when you said you tried different routers :D
<3> and test out the deaf gateway
<1> mailman shouldn't be 'scanning mail' ?!?!
<1> you mean MailScanner ?
<3> well that too fknight
<3> heh
<0> it p***es to spam******in
<5> Bando Calrissian
<1> thats not mailman, thats mailscanner
<1> mailman is a list processor.
<0> im not sure what mailman does entirely with my mailsetup, all i know is exim defunts without it
<5> dankid: It's going to be real hard to isolate, however, if the problem is very sporadic and doesn't last long when it occurs.
<1> if you don't know what the **** you're doing, why are you babbling like that?
<1> mailman is a list server, for email lists.
<0> heh
<1> mailscanner is a virus/spam scanning filter thing.
<1> totally different
<5> I would suggest, if you have an idea of when it's going to happen, to leave your PC hooked up directly for a day or two (with your firewall on) to see if it still happens. If it does, it's either your cable modem, the connection, or whatever . figure that out with the ping
<0> it ties some link between scanning/exim
<5> but if it does turn out to be a problem between your cable modem and the ISP
<5> have them come out and check the signal
<5> if the signal is not right, you will get drop offs
<3> yeah, im going to put this pc downstairs and directly connect it to the modem for a couple days
<5> make sure you're firewalled though
<3> now if its shutting off directly to the modem, then it could be a variety of things right?
<0> exim is prolly just p***ing email through mailman which looks for mailing lists to see if it needs to send the email to other addresses as well
<5> well
<3> modem, cables?, router?, the set up?
<7> shut
<5> if it still happens without the router, obviously not the router. Then what you do is ping the gateway
<7> that's all you need
<7> shut.ece
<7> err exe :D
<5> when you're directly hooked up, you can find the gateway with ipconfig /all
<5> and look for "Default Gateway":
<5> right NOW it will show YOUR ROUTER
<5> but when you're directly connected, it will show ROADRUNNER's router
<5> at their end
<7> hahahaha
<7> AHAHAHAHAHA
<7> LO DEF
<3> true
<7> AAAAAAAHAHAHA
<5> if you can't get to that, it's between your house and roadrunner
<7> lo-def productions
<5> which makes it their problem
<7> aaahahaha
<7> that's too ****ing funny
<5> if you CAN get to that, it's between roadrunner and the Internet
<5> which is still THEIR problem
<5> most likely it's between you and roadrunner
<5> because my roadrunner is fine :D
<3> GAH!
<3> heh
<3> man i wonder
