<0> Gimp-Cow well i'm working towards a more system taxing setup like that (6+channels) so i didn't want to reformat my C drive later if was a performance issue--as for multiple drives, i have several, but my 2 SATA drives are dedicated to gigastudio sampling--i can't record audio on those drives at the same time as i'm streaming samples from them
<1> rando windowsxp too expensice??
<2> emorphix no, I have a pirated version, but it won't run on this computer
<2> it's a 486dx
<3> so get a fourth drive
<3> windows on a secondary partition == ***ery
<4> agolding; CD quality stereo PCM audio is like 170kbyte/sec . 6 of those is STILL around 1MB/sec.
<2> so how can I fix it?
<3> peerce, ***uming 192/24
<3> but yeah still
<1> hrm. dx266 or a dx4100?
<3> doesn't matter
<0> Gimp-Cow i've already spent $500 on hardware recently and i'm broke (i'm a beyond full-time musib student)
<3> well then format, install windows normally
<2> emorphix: 30mhz...you know...486?
<0> that being said, i didn't know windows on a second partition was such a big deal

<3> and don't even bother making two partitions
<5> ip addresses keep changing on my network
<3> just make one big *** partition
<1> rando try WIndows 3.11a for workgroups. I hear its uber fast
<3> (i'd be sampling from 320kbit mp3s anyways tho)
<4> rando; since you're running a 10 year old operating system on evne older hardware, I *do* hope you have good backups of all your files.
<2> emorphix: thats what I was running until last year. I upgraded to 95 though, from a bunch of 5 1/4" floppies
<0> Gimp-Work sure, i might have to do that--but my big problem now is that A) i need to 'unhide' the partition that has my backup image on it and B) i need to successfully restore that image to a partition i can actually boot from. reinstalling is a very bad option, considering the 100s of hours of configuration put into that drive image
<6> lately my computer has been running hella slow compared to what it used to. i get memory errors a lot now that i didnt get before, and every now and then when i start it up it will say an error has occured in windows (like it does when it happens in a normal program). I think windows is ****ed up so i wanted to reinstall it. Can i reinstall w/o formatting and will that help out the slowness?
<3> well call support
<2> peerce: backup to what? I have an 80mb harddrive
<3> i'm sure symantec can help you with your ghost issue
<1> rando: nice. All 300 disks? musta taken awhile
<4> rando; CD-R is a economical choice. or another computer, ftp server, or something.
<3> wtf, i can buy an entire frame rail?
<3> why does that sound like a BAD idea
<2> peerce: this 486 doesn't have any ide slots
<2> no network
<4> rando; ****s to be you.
<0> Gimp-Work where would be too much CPU overhead if one was sampling from mp3s--i'm working with orchestral sampling, where the sample library is like 300gigs and the CPU is one of the bottlenecks, so adding mp3 decoding to that would be shooting myself in the foot--not to mention tha ti doubt that gigastudio even runs on mp3s
<2> I lost the stuff on my xp box too, but that wasn't as important
<3> i've run reason with like, 20 channels
<3> from mp3s
<1> rando linux probably would be a better way to go. you wouldnt have to worry about virus'
<3> on a 2500+ amd athlon xp
<6> did anybody reply to me? i cant tell who people are talking to
<3> DrankALot, who the **** knows
<6> not i
<2> emorphix: where can I get a pirated copy from? is that newer than XP?
<3> troll
<1> rando Unlike windows, its absolutly free!
<2> emorphix windows is free
<0> Gimp-Work i'm trying to get the vienna symphonic library up'n'running and it is pretty resource intense--plus i'm trying to play these samples in real-time with my MIDI controller
<1> rando oh yeah.
<1> my bad
<3> hah
<3> you need dual core
<0> Gimp-Cow more like dual PCs
<2> emorphix is it newer than XP?
<7> dual core for audio apps?
<0> i'm building a 2nd slowly as i aquire parts
<2> did they rename longhorn?
<7> what audio app takes advantage of dual core?
<3> i'm ***uming he's running more then one app at a time
<1> rando Yes, its updated by users/deveoplers who care.
<7> eh
<7> OH NO
<1> rando no messy security patches.
<3> but since you asked
<7> my portal server died
<3> i think cubase uses multiple cpus
<0> digiwork i dunno, but the standard solution for gigastudio is to have multiple PCs connected via Audio and MIDI (or MIDI over LAN)
<2> emorphix will it work on my 486?
<7> cuabse will use 2
<2> because XP won't
<1> rando yes. anything from a 386 and up
<2> I can use my 386's?!
<2> I have about 30 in my basement
<1> rando it will make you an 31337 h5x0r
<3> someone ban those trolls

<1> rando: you can make a cluster!
<0> Logic audio can use networks MACs for distributed processing
<7> that gets really messy really quick
<0> what does?
<2> emorphix: So, it's newer, and it runs on old hardware?
<7> multiple computers for daw distribution
<7> now if you are using other computers as sound modules, tats ok
<7> thats
<0> i've only read about it
<1> rando yes it does. You can configure it to be anything you want it to be
<7> but you should keep the recording to a single computer
<0> in the Logic features
<0> by sound modules do you mean Audio effects?
<0> or MIDI instruments?
<7> no
<1> rando: its great for writing window virus' on
<7> modules/instruments/external sound modules or vsti's
<0> "Distributed Audio Processing
<0> Run tons of plug-ins using networked G5 systems."
<0> i think that includes audio effects
<7> i run quite a few plugins
<7> along with around a max of 24 stereo tracks
<7> @ 32 bit floating 44khz
<0> anyway, let me ask a simpler question--anyone know how to 'unhide' a partition??
<1> cfdisk /dev/hda
<0> cfdisk or fdisk?
<1> dd if=/home/windowsxp.iso of=/dev/cdrom
<0> huh?
<1> mkfs.xfs /dev/hda1
<8> o.O
<8> nice topic
<0> since when is .xfs an exectuable?
<1> nmap -P0 Toronto-HSE-ppp3704319.sympatico.ca
<0> ...
<8> woot! canada!
<1> blame canada!
<8> <3 canada
<8> southpark ripoff :/
<0> yeah.. we have legal gay marriage.. and legal prostitution...
<1> their beady eyes and flappy heads
<2> agolding: you fit in well there?
<8> where else can I get a full contact lapdance and a joint for 20 bucks?
<1> hes a married gay prostitute?
<8> nowhere
<8> but canada
<0> rando, no one invites me to the wild canadian igloo orgies
<0> dir
<0> oops
<0> lol
<9> THis user today was like, why is my laptop keep going to standby? I go over to his desk and say, show me.
