<Hawson> not much help for servers that need general access. :-/
<pbug> yeah but those are usually filtered for outside organization right?
<Mouring> 566 attempts.
<omnix> Mouring, how do you view the # of attempts
<Hawson> pbug: when possible, yes.
<Mouring> omnix, grep the logs.
<Hawson> When your "organization" is "the entire university, including travelling and visiting faculty", it get's pretty hard to filter
<Hawson> oh, I forgot "off-site collaborators" as well
<pbug> how about setting up a vpn then so they authenticate first and then they can ssh to any box they belong to
<Hawson> That only works for some users.
<omnix> Mouring, using grep -c?
<omnix> i see 2500 Failed attempts
<Hawson> I don't run the VPN, and that requires "official university netids"
<Mouring> 75,000 attempts
<pbug> hawson: you know authpf, instead of using it for outside connection use it for inside connections as well
<Mouring> if I count all failed entries.
<omnix> damn
<omnix> your server is popular
<Hawson> pbug: again, I don't control the border routers. :-(
<omnix> webserver?
<omnix> mine's just a lowly ftp server
<Mouring> well that is since nov 23th, 2005
<Mouring> web/mail
<omnix> mine is 2500 attempts from Jan 15th. so about 1250 hits per day.
<omnix> so i guess around 75,000 attempts too for me since Nov 23rd
<Hawson> 51,000 since Oct 24th
<Mouring> around 6,600 unique accounts atempted.
<Hawson> this is ont a laptop that is frequerntly disconnected
<Mouring> almost tempted to move to rsa key only logins, but that is such a PITA.
<Hawson> Mouring: I already have in several places.
<Hawson> my own boxes, for example, and several new servers I've created.
<Mouring> I use RSA keys on my laptop and at home.. just have to convert them to putty keys for work.
<Yashy> I only ssh (remotely) into mine from friends ssh shell accounts, so my sshd only listens to those IPs :)
<Hawson> Ther'es a conversion tool?
<Hawson> that's handy
<Mouring> putty uses SSH corp's key format IIRC.
<Hawson> :-(
<Hawson> openssh > ssh.com
<Mouring> 300 years of Ben Franklin..
<pbug> hrmm if I went to a conference regarding the holocaust put together by the government of iran I wonder if I'd be convinced that it never happened...
<pbug> I'd probably have to go to prison for attending if I returned to germany though
<Hawson> I'd hope not in both cases
