<0> hi?
<0> someone out hter?
<1> nope
<1> heh just ask your question :-)
<0> simple one. just got ubuntu install and cant connect to internet
<0> got a speedstream 5360 ethernet adsl
<1> same computer?
<0> y.
<1> if you changed computers you have to reset your modem
<1> reset or power cycle.
<2> Tsu: #757 (7276101 clicks) Tcl: Reset safetcl.
<0> no.same one
<1> did you attempt to setup your network yet?
<0> y but doenst work and im king of newbie to linux so..
<1> goto the desktop/.. chose system > administration > networking
<0> y

<1> what ever then
<0> im not in linux now. is there a guide or something that could help.
<1> moron
<3> pssshhh
<4> lol
<5> what is the Linux source directory from ubuntu ?
<6> how do you play asf files on ubuntu
<7> I recently upgraded to Dapper Drake, but my OpenGL has stopped working. Is there an easy way to fix this?
<8> hello
<9> yo
<9> crimsun, are you here by any chance?
<9> is there anybody here, by chance?
<10> better off asking a question than asking whether or not anyone is here
<9> haha, yeah, i guess thats true
<10> breakdeck, ati or nvidia?
<9> hey, this is nssone from the other day actually, you were helping me with ubuntu
<9> well, i have it up and running finally, it turned out that that particular drive was bad
<10> i thought so
<9> but now im trying to get folder/file permissions for my other drives again
<10> http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper <--- it's in there
<10> probably under the NTFS section or such
<11> hey all. . i just stumbled in here. . do you folks field tech support type questions in here?
<7> Ferro, it's Nvidia
<9> ok, wtf, i did this 'sudo chown tg37 /tmp/disks-conf-hda1' and got this 'chown: changing ownership of `/tmp/disks-conf-hda1': Read-only file system' and i still cant access the content of the folder
<10> tg37, nope, read the link i gave you
<12> easyer to do everything as root
<10> hint: /etc/fstab and 'mount -o' ('man mount')
<9> it said the drives were already mounted
<9> when i tried those commands before
<10> breakdeck, make sure you have the 'nvidia-glx' package installed still, and check which kernel you're using. After the upgrade, you'll need a reboot
<10> tg37, http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper#How_to_mount.2Funmount_Windows_partitions_.28NTFS.29_manually.2C_and_allow_all_users_to_read_only <--- that'll give you a very good hint, the umask option is what sets the permissions for a mounted partition/drive
<10> you'll need to unmount (umount) the drive before you can mount it again
<10> get a list of mounted partitions on your system via the 'df' command
<10> RideSn, yeah sure, ask away, someone will answer if they know
<10> Geri, unsecure, but whatever floats your boat
<11> cool ok. .
<10> *insecure
<9> im trying to unmout the drive, but it's saying its busy
<10> if you are in a directory on the mounted partition, or you are using a file on the mounted partition, or if you are doing *anything* to any of the files or folders/directories on the partition it will not unmount cleanly, so it's stopping you from the probability of stuffing up your partition/filesystem
<9> i dont see what i could using that is still accessing it
<11> im trying to dual boot xp pro and dapper. . I install xp first creating 2 partitions, installing xp on the c: drive. . installs successfully; no problems. I then install ubuntu on the other partition (both partitions are (35gb / 20gb respectively) and install goes fine. when rebooting grub launches with: "GRUB loading stage1.5 GRUB loadin, please wait..." no error message, the system just hangs right there. I've been searching high
<11> i've seen this question asked in a few places with no solid answers yet
<10> tg37, you can check using the 'fuser' or 'lsof' commands, i suggest you research on how to use them, i can't sit here teaching you all day ;)
<11> i also tryed installing with my breezy cd for the hell of it, with the same result
<10> RideSn, weird, I doubt it has anything to do with XP being on a seperate partition though
<11> hummm
<10> where did you install grub?
<11> MBR i believe. . where ever the installer put it by default
<10> ok, you didn't use the xfs filesystem did you?
<11> i dont believe so. . it was a straight defaults install
<10> you would have had to choose it if you did, so if you don't know, it's ext3 not xfs
<11> so ext3 probably or whatever the default is
<10> mmm... when grub comes up, can you get into the grub menu?
<11> unforunately no
<11> . . you mean with the ESC key?
<10> yep
<11> nope, i dont get that far before it hangs
<10> nasty
<11> indeed. .it's been kickin my ***

<10> i'm going to have to palm you off to irc.freenode.net #ubuntu , I haven't delt with that issue before sorry
<11> ok thanks
<10> np
<6> Does anybody know how to play .asf files, when I play them all I get is a black screen...
<10> works fine for me, I use the mplayer package though which may download extra 'codecs'
<6> hmmm
<6> what it be this sudo apt-get install mozilla-mplayer?
<4> huh ?
<6> I want mplayer with the extra codec
<4> sudo apt-get install mplayer
<6> is that with the extra stuff
<4> apt-cache search mplayer
<4> no
<4> apt-cache show mplayer
<6> I keep getting errors when I play a file in mplayer
<10> grenn, if you want help, you're going to have to put in a bit of effort youself, people usualy hate having to hold people's hands. If you have an error, tell us what the error is, or better yet... google the error, do some research and find out why you're getting the error, you'll probably fix it yourself this way, google should return results on others that have had the same problem and probably have solutions
<10> believe it or not, it's not our aim to sit here and aswer simple questions you can easily find the answer to yourself by a bit of research
<6> most of all the quesiton I ask, I had a hard time find.... I always google things before I ask...
<10> [11:48] <6> I want mplayer with the extra codec <---- http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper <--- it's in the topic, guess you're not trying hard enough
<10> use the links in the topic, they *will* be helpful
<4> Very much so
<4> We arent paid to answer questions
<4> if its a big error you could find a pastebin to dump it in and put a link in here
<13> hello again
<13> can anybody help me? i trying to do whats on this page here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=169749&highlight=hellanzb
<13> i cant seem to apt-get install unrar
<14> what makes you think there's an unrar package? :P
<13> well, i was just following the instructions in on that forum posting
<14> well, well, well! i can't access it either
<14> what distro are you using?
<13> ubuntu
<14> i mean, which type. warty, hoary, breezy, dapper, edgy?
<13> i think dapper
<13> not sure
<13> i forget how to find out
<13> all i know is that it's just ubuntu and not k or x
<14> download/install that
<14> (it's the unrar-nonfree package)
<14> or try, apt-get install unrar-nonfree
<13> i got it installed
<13> now i just need par2
<14> par2?
<13> yeah, par2, parity checking program?
<13> i think this is it http://packages.ubuntulinux.org/cgi-bin/download.pl?arch=i386&file=pool%2Funiverse%2Fp%2Fpar2cmdline%2Fpar2_0.4-6_i386.deb&md5sum=241648ef0a25a5180ac5edafeb529626&arch=i386&type=main
<13> ok, that worked, but now im having trouble with permissions
<13> it works if i sudo, hm
<13> thats kinda not cool
<14> actually running the unrar ?
<14> check the read permissions on it, make sure it's a+r
<13> yeah, the problem is that it seems to be going to dirs i dont have permissions to unless i sudo
<13> gotta **** around with this **** now
<13> and gedit aint coming up now, wtf
<15> hrm, does the server edition of 6.06 only add functionality/features, or does it have less out of the box in any way when compared to the desktop version?
<13> awesome, finally
<14> i'm not sure about 6.06, but generally server just installs the base system + usable packages, it doesn't install a heap of unecissary crap to make the system look/work like a workstation
<13> i got hellanzb to work... yes
<10> NssOne, unrar is in the multiverse repositoru
<13> ferro
<13> i for the script running now
<13> *got
<13> i had to search it up on ubuntulinux.org
<16> can someone help this newbie with kubuntu/ubuntu installation?
<14> ?
<16> i used install via text mode since my system hanged on live mode
<16> but the installation simply wont complete itself sayin that it was installed previously...
<13> why did it hang?
<16> it hanged at 15% for a whole nite...
<16> dunno why
<16> i can move my mouse
<13> mine would hang because the disc i was installing it to was bad
<16> sorry..this is my first time i'm exploring linux...
<13> try doing a diagnostic on the drive its installing to
<13> im rather new to using linux as my sole os also
