<1> how do i fix my hdd to put all the little ubuntu partitions back to the one partition
<2> no
<2> you have separate locations for different ****
<2> "fix"
<2> it's not broken.
<2> NEXT!
<1> like i did have 10gig for it but now it shows like a 7gig and a 2gig and a 1gig y is that?
<2> right
<2> part of that is a swap partition
<2> which is a bit like the swap file in windows
<1> ok
<2> has it's own partition space, much more efficient
<2> other stuff is for logs, system files etc
<1> ic

<2> the largest section is for your files and applicatons you install
<2> it makes senses to separate them up
<2> lowers some risks also
<2> especially when you have multiple users, so you can restrict their access to write onto system files
<2> which works wonders at preventing virus writers from writing efficient and damaging code
<2> etc
<1> so how come i manage to crash it all the time
<2> luck?
<2> bad hardware?
<2> ubuntu doesn't crash for me
<2> ever
<2> and i do some FUNKY STRANGE ****ED UP stuff
<1> hmm
<1> would it be better to use 20 gig for ubuntu?
<2> not really
<1> y?
<2> another reason it's better than vista - doesn't take 10gig for a windows install FFS
<2> because it's not got such a large footprint as windows
<2> you'll still have plenty of space for other stuff and swap files etc
<1> ok so how di i install it to the 7 gig partition
<2> there's stuff in all 3 partitions
<2> it knows what to do with all the separate paritions, or labels
<1> so im in at the desktop of the live cd do i click on install?
<3> yeah
<3> it walks u through partitioning your hdd
<3> and choosing which partitions for which stuff
<1> umm how do i get them partitions to be back to ntfs format as i cant get it to go back do i use the windows xp cd?
<3> if u formatted em with a different file format you lost data on em. you can afaik just use the ubuntu installer to format partitions as ntfs
<1> hmm
<3> you'l have to reinstall windows after
<2> if you want to put windows back on and get rid of ubuntu
<2> just put he windows xp cd in the drive and reboot
<3> yeah
<2> but you will lose all of your documents if you didn't back them up
<3> yup
<2> but you might have already lost them when you installed ubuntu
<1> i still want ubuntu but my hdd wont let it install coz the patitons are all ****ed up
<2> so why not click install etc
<2> and during the install routine, you can get it to wipe all existing partitions and start from scratch
<1> i did but it failed and it wont put the 5 partitions it made back to the one
<2> but YOU WILL LOSE EVERYTHING
<2> unless you backup
<3> as long as you didn't touch your windows partitions when you installed ubuntu you'll be fine. if you never even installed it (just ran the livecd) then you've nothing to worry about
<3> if you've got 5 partitions, then delete them all. and then create 1 big one
<1> but i trtied and it wouldnt
<3> when you delete em, they should just turn into 'free space'
<3> waiting to be partitioned
<3> or formatted
<1> hmm
<2> hmm
<2> watching: it's a pain using the live cd gpart application
<2> really it is
<2> but please, try again
<1> i used the xp cd to put it back to 1 partiurion of free space without looseing anything
<3> hmm
<1> now i got all free space to 9gig so it should work fine now
<1> it seems to install better now
<1> is there a program like (dvd shrink) for ubuntu?
<2> use google
<4> helo
<2> ih

<2> anybody else :D
<3> whats a decent newsgroup client for ubuntu?
<1> i got my ubuntu working well now
<1> thanks for all your help
<5> is there any good hex editor for linux?
<6> apt-cache search hex editor <-- gives me 22 packages, I dare say there is a good one ;) I haven't needed a hex editor, so I can't offer personal advise as to which is most suited for you
<1> is there any program that is like dvd shrink like make a dvd-duel layer into a 4.5gig dvd single layer?
<7> yes
<5> ferro: they all ****
<5> nothing comes close to what windows has to offer (hex workshop and winhex)
<6> if you've tried all the avaliable ones that come packaged for ubuntu, then perhaps check out freshmeat.net or if you really want to use what you had in windows, you can always use cross-over office or wine to use windows apps in linux
<5> yes....
<5> or write my own hex editor the way i like
<5> it's just surprising that there is a hex editor gap
<5> it's a relatively simple program/concept
<6> feel free to write your own, I'm sure others would appreciate it ;)
<5> yes... need to restore my hdd first
<5> gparted messed it up when i tried to resize a partition
<6> nasty, i usually use qtparted, but i think it's only a GUI toolkit different between the two. Never had a problem with it
<6> partition magic usualy arses things up for me
<5> yeah, pm ****s
<5> gparted worked fine before, dunno what happened
<5> of the commercial ones, paragon partition manager is the best IMO
<5> i should have used that
<5> but that would be one extra reboot...
<5> this one looks pretty good ---> http://home.gna.org/bless/screenshots.html
<5> i wonder if it can open disks
<1> is there any program that is like dvd shrink like make a dvd-duel layer into a 4.5gig dvd single layer?
<6> watching, http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=dvd+shrink+linux&spell=1 <-- search OR http://mrb***.org/linux/ubuntu/dvdshrink/
<1> ty ill try it after i copy a dvd in windows xp
<1> how do i save the file after i done... Enable universe in /etc/apt/sources.list
<6> that all depends on what text editor you used to edit the file
<6> make sure you've enabled it correctly, see http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper for syntax
<8> hmmmm, where can I get the current bug list or known problems for flash support in ubuntu's default web browser?
<0> you can just search Malone for flashplugin-nonfree
<8> nonfree?
<5> i.e. it grabs and installs adobe flash player
<5> so not open source
<5> meh, he left anyway
<9> hey, can i get someones input/help on something?
<10> only if you ask
<9> im trying to use a 2GB SD card w/ a built-in flash reader w/ an hp laptop
<9> there is a 'patch' or driver that enables 2GB support for windows
<10> ... and
<9> i'm lost as to what to pursue or try and lookup in regards to finding a work around for this for ubuntu
<9> oyea, if i haven't made it clear, anything over a gig, won't mount/recognize
<10> checked on google at all?
<9> yea, i've looked alot and all i can find is stuff relating to people having trouble with flash drives in general
<9> its weird cause its a specific thing, and i basically don't understand why?.. if you know what i mean
<9> i have no idea what to specify
<10> I hear ya
<10> but what makes you think there's a 2gb limit in linux?
<6> http://www.evilgeniuschronicles.org/wordpress/category/technology/computers/linux/
<6> http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=SD+card+2G+linux&btnG=Search&meta=
<10> ferro ftw
<6> there seems to be an issue on internal card readers
<6> learn to use google, it'll save your arse :)
<6> pick one up for $15 if you can't be arsed messing around
<9> awesome man, thank you so much! i will do this patch
<9> ****, i feel like a bit of a nuisance, because i looked for quite a bit
<6> just need the right search words
<9> thanks alot man! thats why i decided to try and use IRC!
<6> heh, np
<10> no worries
<9> yea, i'll try and be more creative next time
<6> back to python coding for me, weird language... it's so simplistic it makes me sick :P
<11> hi guys..has anyone tried using vnc?
<6> is that your question?
<6> i mean... really... is that what you want to know?
<10> :|
