<0> hello ?
<0> i am wondering how to 'kill' an app ?
<1> it's been a long while since i've used any form of linux, but you could try to run top and find the pid of the app
<1> and then type kill <pid>
<1> i think
<0> 'top' just seems to list some active changing table. ? what does this mean ? am i going to need to recompile my kernel ?
<1> i don't know, i'm not very good with this stuff :(
<0> ha. u seem to know more than me at least. its like free learning isn't it ?
<0> i've been thinkinig so deeply about this open source stuff

<7> apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop kubuntu-desktop
<6> gee, thanks.
<6> ..and I won`t lose any of my files?
<6> like in the home folder?
<6> the folder-architecture will still be the same, right? gnome and kde is just something thats viewing whats already there?
<6> please answer fast so I can cancel, if I am doing a huge mistake now.

<9> nios: #214 (2388076 clicks) Tcl: Reset safetcl.
<3> teitunge: yeah itll just get rid of the architecture containing those ui's
<3> teitunge: if you still want to use X youll have to use one of the other ones that are installed... maybe xfce
<3> ? metacity? not sure. or install something else, like fluxbox which i love :D
<6> ;)
<6> I am already using fluxbox
<6> I like it a lot, and I figured, that since I have other things to use my cpu on - than beryl - I can use *box

<19> what am I doing wrong
<19> can anyone help
<19> I start beryl and it stops
<18> was it windows application?
<19> after its splash screen

<19> root@stalkerguypc:/home/oggy# ./beryl
<19> bash: ./beryl: No such file or directory
<19> root@stalkerguypc:/home/oggy#
<19> :|
<19> ah so start programs cannot start with gnome?
<18> dont think so :p
<20> lol
<18> ask Mellar
<18> =)
<19> Mellar?
<20> oggy: is beryl in the /home/oggy/ directory?
<20> the file "beryl"
<19> eh let me check
<19> root@stalkerguypc:/home/oggy# whereis beryl
<19> beryl: /usr/bin/beryl /usr/lib/beryl /usr/X11R6/bin/beryl /usr/bin/X11/beryl /usr/share/beryl /usr/share/man/man1/beryl.1.gz
<19> root@stalkerguypc:/home/oggy#
<19> its in one of those directories
<19> but I already have red gem in my top taskbar
<19> :|
<20> /usr/X11R6/bin/beryl then
<20> but /usr/X11R6//bin is normally symlinks
<19> yeah I ran beryl

<19> splash screen came up wobbled a bit then went back to gnome session
<19> I dont get what I did wrong
<20> probably something with the configuration
<20> doesn't beryl write to a log-file?
<19> should yes
<20> /var/log/ is definitley a place to start
<19> does beryl work in 64bit ubuntu
<20> http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu
<20> a lot of docs to read, just to install some eye-candy :P
<19> http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu_Edgy_with_nVidia
<19> thats what I did
<19> I used the script
<19> to install beryl
<19> doesnt the script add the repository
<20> and you managed to run the script?
<20> yeah. it just adds some links to your repositories, upgrades your system, download some files and runs xconfigure
<20> nvidia-xconfig
<19> doing a dist upgrade now
<19> there is also a sudo apt get install beryl emerald ererald themes
<21> hi !
<19> 99% waiting for headers
<19> hmm
<21> I'm trying to install "swfmill" (manually, not in repositories), but it needs "libexslt", which I can't find either. What can I do?
<20> install libexslt?
<19> Err http://ubuntu.beryl-project.org edgy/main Packages
<19> Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)
<19> Hit http://nvidia.limitless.lupine.me.uk edgy/stable Packages
<19> Hit http://nvidia.limitless.lupine.me.uk edgy/stable Packages
<21> Mellar: well... I can't find it in the package manager
<20> diederick: http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=libexslt&searchmode=searchword&case=insensitive&version=edgy&arch=i386
<21> oh I can't find it in the package manager.. how can I install this ?
<20> take a look at the url I gave you
<20> hint hint: try to find libxslt1.1
<21> Yeah I got the link, but do I need to download it? or using apt-get?
<19> waiting on headers ?
<19> how long do I have to wait
<20> the link tells you wich package contains the file libexslt
<19> :|
<21> so libdevel?
<20> diederick: once more: libxslt1.1
<21> thanx

<19> now im getting pissed
<22> Lol.
<19> arrrrrg
<19> ack
<6> Hiya. I seem to have trashed my gnome. I tried to purge it, and apt-get autoremove it, but when I reinstall it, my old screwed settings are still up. Is there a way to completely remove my gnome-settings and start over? It`s important that the folder-architecture stays the same, though. Like /home.
<23> maybe rm -rf ~/.gnome* will reset your user gnome-settings
<23> if that's what is trashed
<6> m
<6> hm
<23> what is "trashed" ?
<6> my audio settings
<6> then I tried to fix that, and seems to have ruined most of it
<6> I did a apt-get autoremove too much..
<6> whops..
<6> is there possible to format the ext3-partition, without deleting /home?
<23> uhm, what has happened to you audio settings? maybe there's a way to reverse it without reinstalling a bunch of things
<23> (btw if you type df -h you'll see if /home is on a seperate partition. in that case you can reinstall os and leave /home untouched)
<6> ah, Ill try that
<6> I tried to explain what I have done, but I really don`t know anymore
<6> I started to strip down gnome by hand :(
<23> oh but what has happened to the sounds? silent? or what . .
<23> s-
<23> -s
<6> I wanted to use a headset with jack. So I followed a guide, and after that it didnt detect my soundcard.
<23> what happens if you click System>Preferences>Sound?
<6> I do not have X anymore
<6> init3
<6> I want to do a new install of ubuntu
