<0> well
<1> when i run the ubuntu live cd, the internet won't work. i think it's not recognizing my network adapter. gentoo and knoppix do the same thing, but freebsd and windows detect it just fine. any suggestions?
<0> in spite of what I just said, the buying of hardware and crap...
<2> just installed ubunto on a dell optplex gx620 with ati dual head... changed xorg.conf from ati to radeon driver, and now x starts, but when I click on the power button, the options show for like 3 nanoseconds :P
<0> the operating system exists to make the hardware work. It shouldn't be the other way around. Strictly speaking, though, Beryl would just be another application, not the operating system itself, so that makes me feel a little better about my purchase
<2> what keys bring up the menu on ubuntu so I can do a keyboard initiated shutdown... my mouse isn't working very well...
<0> highlife: what kind of network adapter do you have? Try lspci and see. You'll prolly have to modprobe something to make your network interface light up
<0> TiGgEr9: you can ctrl-alt-F1 to go to a console if you're in X
<2> thanks... that closes x right?
<0> nope
<0> leaves it running
<0> ctrl-alt-backspace closes it. But if gdm is running, it'll just relaunch immediately anyway.
<1> it's a realtek something
<1> 9139 i want to say offhand
<0> 8139?
<1> yes

<2> not sure how I need to fix the friggin mouse :P i didn't think getting ubuntu working on this machine would be such a pain...
<0> highlife: maybe try sudo modprobe 8139too
<1> wish i could use ubuntu
<1> seems nice
<3> someone in poland is trying to hack me
<3> :/
<1> ok, can i test that from the live cd?
<2> ah.... reboot after getting x configured for the radeon driver, and the mouse works fine...
<1> how do you know when someone is trying to hack you
<3> firewall is picking up attempts to login to my ssh
<3> ariadna.ar.lublin.pl
<1> what's good firewall software for ubuntu
<0> highlife: slow down dude
<1> heh
<2> i still can't figure out why they pick **** brown for the ubuntu desktop color scheme..
<1> haha
<0> according to http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_8139series the 8139 is detected by the Gentoo livecd. do lspci and dmesg | grep Realtek
<1> i read an article saying how if google switched to a black background it would conserve untold amounts of enery
<1> hmm, does that mean it is supposed to be working automatically?
<0> if that's your NIC
<1> or do i have to run a command
<0> *shrug* ifup eth0
<0> Ubuntu should fire it up without your asking, though, I'd imagine
<0> the 8139 is a common chipset
<1> realtek RTL8138 family pci fast ethernet NIC
<1> that's what i have
<0> 8138?
<1> 9
<1> sorry
<4> when I enter console with ctrl alt f1 my screen gets all fuzzy
<4> why does that happen?
<0> ^sAs: it hasn't shaven in a while? Or your framebuffer might be set to a weird resolution that your monitor doesn't particularly care for
<4> it's not old enough to get a beard, so that's not it :P where and what is my framebuffer?
<1> ok im gonna go try and run those commands and i will brb
<4> I can google for a solution myself
<0> framebuffer is what tells your computer that the command-line interface should be something higher resolution than 80x24 and can display graphics and garbage.
<4> hmm
<0> I think it's configured in the kernel. Might be more of a pain than it's worth to fix
<0> unless you were planning to recompile your kernel for something else anyway
<4> shouldn't these things have a default value that works with most hardware?
<0> yup
<4> I haven't got the slightest idea what recompiling the kernel actually means, so I'd rather not go that way :P
<4> this might be a more or less common problem
<4> but I do not know the phrase I should google for
<0> it's this fun process where you go through a bunch of questions that only linux devels and hardware designers would have any clue how to answer; then wait for an hour or two while your kernel and modules get recompiled, then reinstall your boot loader, then panic along with your kernel on reboot, then boot into failsafe, restore the original kernel, reconfigure the kernel options, and you're back at step 1
<2> lol
<4> sounds like something I shouldn't do :P
<2> oh, it isn't quit like that...
<0> yeah, there is some swearing in that sequence somewhere that I left out
<5> until a few years ago you were stuck setting up the kernel by hand anyways, it's not that hard
<5> trial and error ftw
<2> its accruate up to the point where you restore the original kernel, at that point you would probably just freak out and not be able to figure out how to restore the original kernel
<0> \o/ akira
<0> oh yeah. if you're in a panic, you'll prolly just grab your install cd and reinstall from scratch
<5> well maybe "by hand" isn't quite the right choice of words, but you get the idea
<4> how do I "p***" something to the kernel at boot?
<1> well, neither of those commands had any output, and the internet didnt start working
<0> I also left out troubleshooting init scripts to figure out why you're getting a crapload more errors in your startup sequence than you did the last time you booted
<0> highlife: lsmod | grep 8139
<0> then modprobe that
<1> k

<1> brb
<0> really, there shouldn't be much need anymore for anyone other than distro devels to recompile kernels, in my humble opinion. Back in the day, memory, floppy space and efficiency of processing time were major factors, so it was a good idea to have your kernel as small as possible.
<0> I can't imagine any kernel, even with every option compiled as Y inside the kernel (as opposed to making modules)... the most bloated Linux kernel in history will pale in comparison to Vista.
<4> so the distro devels should fix my problem? :P
<4> I'll call them and ask them to come over
<6> has anyone actually got this to work https://help.ubuntu.com/community/IntellimouseMousemanBackForwardButtons
<4> rojo do you think that an upgrade of graphics drivers would perhaps solve my issue?
<0> ^sAs: I think graphics drivers have more to do with X than with framebuffer
<7> ^sAs: ubuntu doesn't deliver drivers for your graphics card?
<7> og ctrl+f1 hasn't much to do with graphics driver I guess
<4> the ATI driver pack thats in Add/Remove Applications is not the newest one
<4> so kernel recompiling is the only solution?
<7> no, I guess you can find a module/driver or something
<7> I don't know if ATI delivers drivers for linux/unix
<4> they have a proprietary(?) driver thing on their site
<0> there are a few ubuntu ati howto's, but they all deal with X, not the framebuffer
<4> hmm
<7> yeah. you don't need to load the ATI drivers to see the prompt
<4> I was a windows guy
<4> and I'm used to dos always showing up fine
<7> but you don't have the graphical interface either?
<4> yes I do
<4> X works fine
<0> ^sAs: if you can boot with a kernel option, you can boot with nofb to disable the framebuffer. You'd get 80 characters x 24 and no prettiness, but it's as vanilla as possible
<7> yeah. rojo has a good point
<0> the nofb option basically makes the the F1-F6 TTYs look like DOS
<4> hmm
<0> afk
<7> rojo: but is it compiled into the kernel? it isn't just a module?
<4> will this affect my X windows system?
<0> Mellar: static compile, not modular
<0> ^sAs: no
<0> afk for real
<4> ok I will google for that
<4> thank you :)=
<2> anyone used a usb serial adapter in ubuntu?
<7> ok. it takes about two hours to compile the kernel
<7> maybe an hour. depends on your computer
<4> it's all the know-how I'm afraid of
<6> whats the easiest way to have serial hard drives mount automatically on login
<6> some kind of scripting ?
<7> quaal: /etc/fstab
<6> know of any faq's i could use ?
<6> oh i've edited fstab before
<7> ^sAs: debian-administrators has a pretty good guide for recompiling the kernel.
<7> yeah. it's easy quaal. And there is a lot of good guides out there as well
<6> /dev/hda1 /mnt/win ntfs nls=iso8859-1,ro,umask=0 0 0
<6> seems what i remember
<7> but when you read the file, you'll understand the most important stuff to add
<4> if nofb does the trick then I would rather not throw myself into the fire just yet :)
<7> ^sAs: ok. you doesn't need the prompt if you don't have to play with the X configuration
<8> quaal: man fstab
<8> a lot of linux config files have their own man pages.... the manual's not just for commands
<4> I'd just like to get my OS running without the need for X to run
<7> ^sAs: how are you going to use the computer then?
<4> with CLI?
<7> use it as a server?
<2> how are you going to watch archives of south park with only a cli? ;)
<4> that is the plan
<7> ^sAs: you can control your computer with ssh :)
<4> haven't you seen matrix? with enough skills you can see images when you only look at text! :o
<2> what about the sound?
<4> yeah, but still x would be running
<6> hmm
<6> i'm in the gnome partition manager
<4> which is a waste of resources :)
<6> and the ntfs drives have a <!> triangle
<4> TiGgEr9: I have enough voices inside my head, I don't need sound :)
<2> lol
<0> ^sAs: install Ubuntu Server. I think it gets installed without X. I'm running it in my garage
<6> Unable to read the contents of this filesystem! because of this some operations may be unavailable.
<6> did you install the correct plugin for this filesystem?
<6> i need aplugin for ntfs drives?
<2> ubuntu server is cli only
