<0> **** <1> i think its all messed up,....probably just my uni <0> not just yours :( <1> but i mean, one minute we learn how to manipulate strings in Java, then next minute we have to learn actionscript and we just do pointless stuff <0> that's a prof just wanking...learning structure, deduction, logic... <0> flow...those are important <1> and then we have so many group projects, and I think that is **** at uni,...they say its preparing for the "real world" but i think its bull****, cos at uni people have different commitments <0> I understand trying to get people to work on a team...but that aint the time or place imho <0> 99% of group projects get completed by the one person that has a clue, just to avoid a failing grade <1> haha, yah, well at work is different, cos people get paid to be there, at uni people have other part time jobs, and things so its hard to get time together <1> exactly <1> happened to me recently <0> I have honestly been paid by students to complete their project at the last minute cuz none of them had a clue and/or cared <0> I only did it once...and I kinda ****ed them over...then I thought about the morals of it and I won't do it again <1> hahaha,.....wanna do mine :P <0> only if you have a ****load of money...and understand that I'll **** you over
<1> of course <1> haha <0> I mean...I did the code...and their project worked...I just did it in such a complicated way, it *had* to be obvious to the prof they didn't do it... <1> the installation is finally finishing up <0> I put **** it in the prof prolly had to look up to understand <1> haha <1> how old are you? <0> 32 <1> how long you been programming? <0> 22 years <1> wow <0> damn that sounds scary...I dunno that I've ever seen that in type... <0> 22 of anything is a lot <0> I'm an old **** :( <1> haha yes it is <1> do you agree that it is more difficult to pick up from scratch now? <0> mm....documentation, samples, and help resources are a lot better... <0> but overall things seem a little more complex <1> yah <1> just wanted an opinion <0> hard to say <1> well cos i suppose things kind of evolved when you learnt <0> I think the current languages...vb, c#, c__...whatever...are a lot more flexible...so starting with those with no foundation in general programming logic could be really hard <0> in c or basic, there were two ways to do something...in vb there are 50 ways to do something... <0> sure, only 2 of them are *right*...but there are 50 ways <1> yah <1> I really dont know what to do when I graduate, typical huh? <2> no <0> don't be afraid to start at the bottom. too many people expect to do dev on day one...hell, start in tech support or something and work up <0> you'll learn on the way, and be better when you get there <1> do I work and get train to be professional, i dunno, or do I start my business? <0> starting a biz is hard *** **** <1> well I worked at Ericsson for 2 years before my degree and I worked at Sun Microsystems last year for my industrial placement <1> well,...I kind of got into promotions, and am running 2 club nights at the moment <1> haha, I didnt expect to havee such a long conversation here <1> sql server is still installing <2> exciting <1> very <1> Its done <1> :) <1> thanks for the discussion Purple, no doubt i will be back <1> haha <0> np...and careful with the club nights...I can give ya a long discussion about those too :) <0> ****nuts...I just dropped an amp on my (music) keyboard <1> is SQL Server Management Studio not included in developer edition? <1> hmmmm it should be <1> :| <1> oooops, am so stupid <3> Im back <3> :) <3> You here, Purple-? <2> he better be here, we pay him well to sit here all day <4> :) <3> hehe <3> The Tech people at my work decided they had to make things difficult and inefficent by storing the DateTime in 2 seperate columns. Now I need to put together a report that has it as a DateTime data type. They store the date in a column with the format of yyyymmdd and the time in a seperate column with the format of hm. What is the easiest way, in SQL Server, to convert this to a DateTime data type? <5> nice story <3> Think I should quit my job and become a writer? :) <5> try cast(mydatecol as datetime) <5> see if it gives you the date <3> can I merge the time with that? <5> try and see
<3> :) I'll give it a shot. Thanks for your help. <3> Got to connect to the VPN to test it, and its gonna disconnect me from IRC. So, I want to thank you now. <5> if not then use left() right() and put : to them <5> why doesn it disconnect you from IRC? <3> Ive tried this before. My problem was if it was invoiced at midnight, the time is stored as 0 <3> So it would give me #Error <3> It disconnects me because windows tries to send me through the proxy instead of my inet connection, and they have IRC blocked on the proxy <5> are you using windows VPN? <3> IP*** <3> Dont get me started on ip*** though. I hate it. :) <5> so find a setting that fixes it <5> ...the VPN built into windows has the setting <3> I wonder if I could use that instead of ip***.. They just gave me ip*** and told me to use it <5> prolly can't ;) <3> We'll, i'll be back soon. Thanks for your help, and thanks for the conversation. <5> hold it <5> nevermind <4> what i want to know is how hm encapsulates all time scenarios... <5> probably hhmm <4> ;) <5> or <5> hmmmmmmzzz <4> i wanted to hear it from Vension! :) <0> darken: you used to pay me well...you haven't blown me in weeks now... <4> Who's going to the conference in Orlando? <0> who has time for conferences <0> 98% losers, 2% awesome people that can help you... <0> although you do get to go clubbing on the company dime... <4> It's 3 days out of the office, Purple <4> exactly <4> It's a networking opportunity, too <0> sifting through the 900 cards to find the 3 useful ones gets old <4> this is why you don't have time for conferences...you're too busy working *hard* <5> penis networks meh <5> Gamble, are you going? <0> I don't have time for conferences cuz it's just cheaper to go clubbing on *my* dime and not bother meeting anybody I'll never call again <4> Quant, I thought you were one of the ones going? <4> ok, Purple <0> maybe comdex jaded me too much <5> what kind of clubbing? <0> you name it <5> are there any girls? <0> if there aren't, I'm not going <0> and hopefully they either aren't wearing much, want to **** my girl, or both... <4> sweet <5> lol <5> so you are going with you girl? then i am going :) <4> ! <0> quant: if you don't have a vagina, prolly not invited...no offense :) <5> hehe <5> i got a mangina <0> I mean...I'm sure there are folks at the club that would appeal to.... <5> what club? <3> Are you still here Quant? <5> yup <3> No luck. :) I think it may be because I am working through Access <5> access? <5> so just use something like <4> brutal :) <3> Yea. The IT team wont let me create a table on their database, so I had to create it in access and add a link to the SQL Server <5> mid(mycol,3,4) + "/" + right(mycol,2) + "/" + left(mycol,4) + " " + left(mytime,2) + ":" + right(mytime,2) <3> The problem with that, is if the time is Midnight, it is stored as "0" <5> so put IIF() <3> Do you see any advantage to storing the date and time this way? It makes no sence to me. :) <6> Oops. My Laptop ran out of juice. <6> <-- Vension <4> you're right; it makes no sense <2> <-- Version <7> <-- pants. <3> hehe <3> Is there a function in Access that will let me format a number? The equivilent of Excels Format(number,"0000") <3> ? <4> lol did you use the Format() function? <3> Nope, it appears to be used for somthign else in Access
