<1> heh, it's like *** on ecstasy rog.
<1> but it costs something god-awful.
<0> really .. damn i have a bit of an OS fetish would love to have a play
<2> supposedly the new intel duo is supposed to be able to run significantly faster than any other laptop processor out there
<1> eh, dont get caught up in the techno-religious wars.
<1> it aint worth it.
<2> it's based off a concept of reduced power multi core processing :-)
<1> terminus, i dont give a ****e about laptops...
<0> the other mac laptop cpu is the g4 the duo spanks it
<1> i want power ****ing processors to run my servers on.
<0> i hate laptops unless ur spending like 5grand (aussie$)
<2> roger_Ram, yeah g4s are outdated
<1> the guys i work with are all about #'s of the vendor...
<2> i need a laptop with how much i run about
<1> which is why we buy Dell. cus it's #1 in the ****ing workstation market...

<2> our company buys HPs
<1> i keep reminding them that we're in the business of SERVERS
<0> i havent played with anything really powerfull dont get the chance to in my job. Fastest box i have used is one i built nothing special just an X23800 in it
<1> m y last co. was all HP and it kicks *** over Dell...
<2> we have evod510s, evod530s, and dc7600
<2> for the business cl***
<1> the fact that Dell doesnt produce a real 8-way is a major give away.
<0> what are the evo's whats in em
<2> the evo's are older
<2> evod530s are pentium 4 2.6ghz? i think
<2> 256mb ram
<0> i was hoping to get two dual core opteron 265's here
<3> <1> m y last co. was all HP and it kicks *** over Dell..
<3> hmm
<2> those are the low-end business cl*** computers
<3> ya know - i could see HP producing better hardware
<3> but im thikmning that there would be soo much bloatware attached to each cpu
<1> what theyve got now is better than Dell...
<3> TO UNLOCK HYPER THREADING ONTHIS CPU PlEASE INSTALL 150MB OF Drivers
<2> hah
<1> hahaha
<3> wnat to use ssse2? PLZ INSTALL MORE
<3> :p
<0> wonder when dell will stop being intels BITCH and get some AMD opteron servers
<1> thats not quite true
<2> SSE2 is simple to get to run on HP
<0> or have they got em ?
<3> terminus - that was a bad joke :)
<2> :-)
<1> and at least thier management software is better than the non-existant ****e Dell sells...
<3> that was pointing to their camera, their printers/all in one and their commercial computers
<3> aka non server related ****
<1> ive got onboard controllers that have more than the Perc-4d's
<1> right
<3> dell is for wannabees
<1> again
<1> we're back into the workstation vs. server converstation
<2> heh
<3> yay for backwards progressing conversations :-D
<1> im paid to run power ****ing servers. not workstations.
<2> here's irony
<1> hehehe
<2> we have HPs at my work, and I bought dell's for my dad's business
<1> brb
<2> and one IBM workstation, my god
<3> *couhg workstations *cough*
<2> and I bought him HP servers
<2> it's like wearing nike shoes and addidas pants
<0> we dont have a huge budget at my job,we just put the boxes together for them.. best bang for the buck
<0> thanks for your help b4 terminus i have a long way to go with my DB adventures.. cheers
<2> not a prob
<4> back door adventures?
<2> exactly
<2> he's exploring his ***uality

<1> wtf?
<0> ok that was sad

<3> heh

<4> ahhh
<4> there's a fella that likes it
<3> I wnat you to know draco
<3> drhyde^ i had NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS DEGENErATION
<3> nothing what so ever
<1> lol
<1> yeah yeah yeah
<4> lol
<4> hyde dont care at this point
<1> i know it's all your fault. but secretly we'll blame quant, ok? :)
<0> catch ya's later
<1> feh, i dont care period.
<1> ive got servers to run and developers to LART.
<1> i do find the dell vs. hp wars fun though.
<1> dell is nice, but for the extra couple bucks, the hp is nicer/better. imo.
<1> for chrissakes, we're getting onboard controllers that have more default memory than the perc4 add-in controllers.
<1> wtf does that tell you?
<1> it boots off a 256MB internall and the 4D has 128....
<5> It's funny, I've never had any problems with Dell. Ran a bunch of servers and workstations for about a year and half with no real problems and when a problem did arise Dell was very quick to respond. After I left the guy who took my job, whom I know, does nothing but bitch that they fail all the time.
<5> I swear, I just think some hardware hates some people, or something.
<3> lol
<3> ill second that one
<1> i dont see failures halo. but i see differences in the 'quality' of hardware
<1> it all fails at some point.
<1> and for the marginal price difference to buy hp equipment over dell. you're getting better equipment over the dell.
<1> and we're talking 2500$ on a 15-20K piece of kit...
<1> not a lot of money if you're shelling out 25K for a server...
<5> The worst problem that I had with a server was that after I shut the server down (forget why) it would not power back up. It had power because the standby LEDs were lit, but the power button did nothing. The tech came out within two hours with a crapload of hardware, including new motherboards and everything. After about 15 minutes of tinkering we finally realize that the reason it wouldn't power up was because the power button didn't work.
<5> It had never worked, we just never had a reason to try and push it before.
<1> lol
<1> then you need better NOC power testing routines :)
<5> Yeah, probably.
<1> thats not a fault of the hardware., but more a fault of a process...
<1> its all gonna fail at some point. just when and how badly is the question...
<5> Only real issues we had was that we had a string of workstation failures due to bad hard drives. We got the tiny workstations that ran on laptop harddrives from Toshiba and the entire batch of drives from the manufacturer was bad. Dell came out and spent about a day replacing all of the drives. They worked with us around breaks and didn't slow production at all.
<1> ok
<5> But I had the same exact problems with Compaq.
<1> here we go again. you and i are not in the business of workstations
<5> I'm not in the business of servers either.
<1> this is the same argument i have with the dell zealots at the new company.
<1> ok, fair enough.
<1> i am in the server business...
<5> I was kind of thrown into the position at this company.
<1> its a hoot (for me at least) because the 'engineer's all love dell. and when i ask them why they quote pure #'s sold
<1> which is mostly workstations
<1> and when I ask them, "What pays your salary" they all answer Servers.
<1> i just wanna slap them silly...
<5> My home machine is a Dell Precision. It's going to be 6 years old this year.
<4> O RLY?
<4> does it still run good?
<5> Oh yeah
<5> I've had a couple of hardware failures, all fan related.
<3> heh
<5> Chipset fan went and fried the mobo. Cost me $150 to replace it, I was surprised that the CPUs weren't damaged.
<3> i haev a gateway computer that worked for the longest of time
<3> lasted 3-5 years
<1> mechanical failures abound, its a matter of how much you'r epaing to not be interruped by them that matters.
<3> still runs - i think the ide controller is shot though
<1> err, paying.
<4> hmm
<5> dr: Sure.
<3> this amd box has been running for about 4 years now
<3> replaced the motherboard and the cpu 3 - 4 times the first year though
<3> :P
<5> dr: Sometimes it helps to be redundant.
<1> sometimes :)
<5> The forementioned down server was a domain controller, one of three.
<5> Nobody noticed.
<1> i had to explain last week to the Sr. Engineer that it's a good idea for cluster servers to be cross-cabled to the switches so that a single network (switch reboot) doesnt take out a whole series of clusters...
<1> "You mean you want each node connected to two switches?"
<1> uhhh, yeah!
<5> :)
<1> thats what im dealing with, atm...
