<0> Latency : **** the 53 tables
<1> ANYBODY HOME??
<2> i think he's ****ing
<3> whats the differences in the table structure? only the name?
<0> bye, ****tard
<4> the 53 = the same.. 'Cards' main table that should have all of them is totally different.. comprising of the fields of the 53 tablles.. + other fioelds
<1> wait
<0> too late
<1> 53 tables .... cards ....
<2> haha
<2> he's making poker
<0> that last sentence wasn`t english anyway
<1> this may just be even more hilarious
<5> like that dude who's learning sql making a mmorpg.. this one's making a poker website?
<6> hahaha
<6> Oh man.

<7> "it's like a nightmare; it keeps on getting worse and worse"
<8> anyone use mssql 2005 server? what is the default uid and pwd for localhost connection?
<3> sa (no p***word)
<9> hello
<9> i am using mysql on linux, how can i search for a parameter in the db and when find it, change it?
<3> goto #mysql or #linuxhelp
<9> k ty
<3> or learn to read the tutorial docs for the db
<9> its some app built in db
<5> sounds dangerous
<5> hope their mysql is in harmless mode
<5> or whatever its called
<10> heh
<11> hi
<11> I'm having a problem with SQL Express 2k. I've enabled TCP/IP and Named pipe connectivity on my local system but when I try to connect with sqlcmd -s 127.0.0.1/SQLEXPRESS i get the unable to connect error
<11> is there a step I'm missing somewhere?
<11> based on everything I've read thus far, enabling the client protocols should have resolved this
<12> how would i use multiple like conditions
<3> with AND and OR between them.
<12> i.e. LIKE '%lorem%' OR LIKE '%ipsum'
<12> that is correct? i was getting an error. lemme double check
<13> I've got a book on php and sql database that I'm reading through in order to create my own web forum.. this may sound really bad when I ask this and yes I am complete new to sql, but every reference I go to just shows me code of creating an sql database and I'm trying to figure out where that code is supposed to go
<3> what[cs]S, this isnt the place for that. you need to pick a database to use, and read ALL the tips and tutorials.
<12> WHERE DocumentData LIKE '%lorem%' OR LIKE '%ipsum%'
<13> I guess my main question Jarett is if I were to get Microsoft SQL 2005 does it have an interface to type the code and generate the database as if I was coding in C++ ?
<12> aha, didn't tell it which field in the 2nd.
<3> what[cs]S, yes
<12> i'd think MS SQL isn't a great beginners db
<12> as you will be shelling out some dough for it
<7> they have Express edition to learn on
<7> free
<3> sql server expess is free but ****s.
<13> Well, I'm strong with coding.. I've got experience in many different languges
<7> of course it ****s
<13> what would you suggest would be best in managing a web forum?
<3> oracle XE (express) is free and good web gui to it. and postgres is free too
<7> I agree with that; the web gui for oracle XE is pretty nice
<11> sql express is free.
<11> and fine for learning
<11> and even for development
<13> I guess my biggest problem is my php book is related to sql databaes and how to access them though php.. if I were to go with oracle XE would I no longer need any of that php knowledge?
<11> what, what is your question. i don't really follow what you're saying.
<3> what[cs]S, a database stores data nothing more
<3> it is not a programming language
<13> okay.. what I'm trying to figure out is the best way to access the database that I create.. all my books tell me how to access a sql database.. but it seems that there are other ones out there that might be better
<11> SQL is certainly a programming language, just not in the conventional sense.
<7> SQL is not a programming language
<11> ok, why is it any different than any other programming language?
<14> is there a way to do "select * from tab1 order by v1 desc, v2 rand();"
<14> i know that i can do "select.... order by rand();"
<11> how do you define a programming language?
<7> It is not a programming language in the cl***ic sense of the word; there are no SQL "programs"
<14> but i need rand just in one collum
<13> okay let me start fresh and make my question completely clear.. I want to create a web forum for my website that has a database and what would be the easiest way to access that database and display the information from it to a web page?
<11> SELECT * FROM table is a program
<11> it's just not tangible.
<7> no it isn't
<3> no it isnt
<11> why?
<11> because it's compiled at runtime?
<7> it is a command p***ed to a program for execution

<11> so is perl, python
<11> their programming languages
<3> is html a program?
<7> hehe
<11> no, html is a language
<3> and?
<3> whats SQL stand for?
<14> software is the same as program?
<7> there are procedural extensions to SQL, such as T-SQL, that enhance the functionality, but do not make SQL a "programming language"
<3> so a language cant be a program?
<11> heh
<3> whats the L in perl ?
<11> you're definition of a programming language is flawed
<7> no, your notion of Program is flawed
<11> ok, why?
<11> you haven't defined that yet
<11> you said it wasn't a language because it's p***ed to a program and run
<11> and I said that perl and python do the same thing
<7> ok i will ask you a series of questions
<7> Is SQL Turing complete?
<11> SQL is as much of a programming language as perl or python, just with a completely different purpose
<11> now if you're saying that scripting languages aren't programming languages because their compiled at runtime, then that's up for debate
<15> does SQL server express have restrictions like MSDE did?
<11> face, yes.
<16> face-:: yes
<11> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0072191473/104-8146774-6323961?v=glance&n=283155
<11> what 's that book called?
<11> Oracle9i PL/SQL Programming
<3> plsql isnt sql brainiac
<7> rofl
<3> plsql is a procedural based off of ADA, and is compiled in runtime or precompiled
<7> I think we are getting to the crux of the issue before us now
<11> that's just 1 reference of 100 million on google
<11> TheGamble, i'm waiting for you to uphold your end of the arguement here
<7> I already did, ***hat; I asked you if SQL was Turing Complete
<11> and why would that matter?
<3> Darren-, you see wednesdays southpark?
<11> I don't watch southpark.
<11> forget asking me questions, just tell me what characteristic SQL on its own has that does not let it fit the model of a programming language
<11> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_language#Definitions_of_programming_language
<11> thanks for playing
<7> lol
<3> yeah resort to wikipedia.. a site with people as ignorant as you ;)
<11> :()
<11> heh
<11> good night :)
<7> what a ****
<13> okay let me try out this question.. hopefully you guys still have the patients for my lack of knowledge in this area.. I have an access database that contains login information, username and p***word. So I want to create on a webpage a login form and when submitted it looks in the database and tries to match fields.. how would I even start to do that?
<3> what[cs]S, figure out the interface to the DB
<3> ado, odbc, whatever
<13> so I'd be looking for a book on say ADO in this case to learn how to access the database through code to loop through certain fields for matching?
<3> you need to use a method for the language and webserver that will support it
<3> what webserver? what language?
<13> well, I definitely know my webhosting server allows php and sql.. but sql is just racking my brain right now..
<3> then the db is probably mysql
<3> and we dont support that here
<3> you would do mysql -u username -p < filename.sql
<3> or mysql -u username -p (to log in_
<3> and then enter your commands
<3> but most likely you dont have ssh access and your control panel has phpmysql installed and you will use that to create objects and enter initial sql to setup the db
<3> once its setup you would use php.
<13> yeah, you lost me :P I'm just looking up to see if the company gives me any other types.. 'Cause Access I understand..
<13> I know PHP but not mysql :/
<7> what[cs]S, the basic formula is a) connect to database server using your language's sql interface library b) construct sql statements c) p*** statements to the database server via the library d) process any results
<3> what[cs]S, does your hoster have a web control panel? if so go look at it.
<3> if it does, and you have an icon that says database or mysql or phpmysql.. then go get a book like these
<13> it shows the mysql server and database name etc..
<3> http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0975240218/newjerusalemc-20/ http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0596000413/newjerusalemc-20 http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1931841322/newjerusalemc-20/
<3> you need an intro to mysql book.
<7> there is a nice combo book out there for php and mysql together
<13> yeah I see the combo's everywhere..
<7> good for beginners; it's called PHP5 and MySQL bible
<3> yeah since webhostersa always support them
<7> has a few practical examples and such
