<0> 'lo. <1> Hey dudes. <1> Im about to install slackware 10.2 on my new laptop. Im just wondering how much swap i should partition? <1> Its an ibm r60 with 2gb of ram. <2> what will you use the system for? <1> mostly programming <2> for desktop use, you shouldn't need any swap with 2gb of ram (but throw in 512mb just to be safe) <1> and web programming to. <2> that **** doesn't eat even 512mb of ram <1> alright so i should be safe with 512/. <1> ? <2> more than safe <2> if everything is working properly, you should find your swap is NEVER userd. <2> er.. used
<1> hmm. <1> How can i check that? <2> use 'free' <1> alright thanks. <1> well. Im going to install now. thanks for the help! <2> no problem <1> okay im sorry. <1> I have another really quick question. <1> ibm for some reason have split my 80gb hard drive into two. <1> one is a 70gig partition with my os on it. the other is a 10gb partition called ibm service. <1> is it okay to have my linux partition and swap inbetween the two? <1> so ill have [ibm 50][linux 20][ibm service 10] <1> anyone around? <3> yes <3> im here sir <1> :P <1> Is it okay to have my linux partiton inbetween two other partitions? <1> ibm made one partition (the main one) and then another right beside it which is called ibm service. <3> well ideally you should have more than one linux partition <1> can i have etx3 and my swap inbetween the two? <3> yes <1> Well, I tried installing and when i booted into the cd, it told me i had no partitions :S <1> i double checked them in pm before. <1> and cfdisk tells me that i cant view the partiton table. <3> you have existing partitions and you want to add more? <1> yes, i have a main one. for my windows. then another, IBM put the partition on there.. i dont even know what its used for. <1> but its called ibm service. <3> maybe a backup partition of some sort <3> how large is it <1> its a FAT partition and its 5gigs. <1> theres 4gigs used in it <3> probably a system restore type <1> yup. i just googled it. <3> ok so you have these 2 partitions <3> and there is still unpartitioned space on the disk? <1> theres a 71gig partition. which i want to resize for linux. <3> ok you cant resize partitions with cfdisk <3> you will lose your data <1> i didnt, i tried it in partition magic <3> oh <1> i got the partitions the way i wanted. <1> but... slackware setup didnt see them. <1> i had an etx3 partition and a linux swap <3> hmm <3> well when you are prompted as to where you place your files what did you enter? <3> /dev/hda2? <1> thats the thing. i enter the setup and right away it tells me i have no partitions setup. <1> so i cant do anything else. <3> oh <3> and you mentioned when trying cfdisk that it was not able to read the partition table? <1> yea. i tried to go into cfdisk, to see wtf was a matter. and it gave me some message. then it showed me a random 600mb partition. <3> hmm <3> something doesnt sound right
<3> does your windows stuff still work? <1> yea <3> thats real strange <3> one more thing <3> what kind of disk is it <3> ATA or SATA <1> im not sure. <1> its a laptop.... <1> most likely ata <3> oh ok <3> did you try regular fdisk? <1> no. <1> linux should detect partitions that havent been named right? <3> yes <1> alright im going to try and resize it again. and then get slackware to make the etx3 partition and the swap on the partition. <1> instead of me doing it. <3> well the best way to go about it would to be just leave unpartitioned space for linux and then use cfdisk to create linux partitions in the unpartitioned space <3> just use partition magic to rezise the windows and IBM ones <1> yea. <1> alright ill try again thanks. <1> champi0n i think i have an sata. <1> because it didnt work again. <1> **** <1> it is sata <1> sata.i <4> Life is good. <4> oww, that hurts <5> GRRRR <6> felix is abusing the poor bot :( <3> abuse <7> hey guys, how do i use slackware current? Can i install it from scratch or is it a case of installing 10.2 and updating <3> im not too sure <3> i would suggest installing it from scratch <3> but firstly i would recommend using 10.2 <3> and dont bother with current <7> hmm ok thanks, its just lots of software seems to be all old versions in the 10.2 release <3> yes you are correct <3> 10.2 has been out for a while <3> but your best bet would to be updating select software that you plan on using <7> ok thanks i guess thats the best way <8> tntcoda: current is "unstable" <6> Mmmm, Debian Etch <3> tntcoda: it will probably be much less of a headache to update only the things you need/use on a daily basis <3> jack-home: pheer me <8> champi0n: huh? <3> =] <8> bbl <9> Hi, I have some slackware servers runnings. And then one day after a 1 year update they had a hard crash due to power failure. It seems it trashed the file system because on startup I had to do a lot of manual fsck things. And the second server it seemed I could not even recover it. Anyone know how to handle this or if there is a crash it can do all fsck automatically so i dont have to goto hosting center? <10> jsmith_: fsck is run automatically at startup <10> if it asks for user input, then there's something seriously trashed <10> you _want_ to be there to have a chance at fixing it <10> if your hosting place is unreliable, get your own ups there and make your server shut down when ups says <5min left <11> did you use ext2? <11> if you did, that was RETARDED <3> do you prefer ext3? <10> I prefer ext3 <10> since I started using it, haven't had any serious fs damage <3> me either <3> it works good for me <10> lost+found is empty =) <12> can someone help me get vmware tools to install in slackware ? "what is the directory that contains the init directories ? (rc0.d/ to rc6.d/) ?" an answear /etc or /etc/rc.d but it wont work ... any clue ?
