<0> sup comet
<1> so what this is ..basically .. is a software sponsored method of catching piracy?
<1> pugs :)
<1> just waiting for my husband to wake up ..
<2> CometBaby: you can read the rest of the article here ---> http://www.informationweek.com/blog/main/archives/2006/02/yes_trusted_com.html
<0> cometbaby: basically
<0> it's a way for software companies to control your computer
<0> :)
<1> key sentence
<1> The real control lies with the hardware and software companies. Theyre the ones who actually enforce the DRM and have the encryption keys, so they can hold your data to ransom.
<0> the big corporate media houses don't like the idea that some people would rather steal their mediocre offerings than pay for them
<2> if people don't start to educate themselves on what is being sold to them in new computers in the coming months ahead and don't start rejecting these motherboards that have the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chips installed on it, then they're going to be in a rude awakening when they attempt to access all manner of files on their computers
<1> Iam .. when I purchase my new computer next week .. you better be around to advise me :)
<1> oopos
<1> next year ..
<1> Sometime near Xmas .. when they go on sale .. maybe right after xams.

<2> heh...Vista will probably be out then
<2> and all mobos will probably have those damned TPM chips inside
<2> you may thank Microsoft for initiating what was formerly know as Palladium with Intel and AMD
<2> as if Microsoft is a trustworthy company...pffft!
<0> yeah
<1> well lets see what they have out then. If this is still cranking away .. there won't be any rush. This is not exactly a dog.
<0> msft is real trustworthy
<0> u can always trust them to screw u out of as much cash as possible
<0> :)
<2> now we're going to trust them with their hardware/software combination of "trusted computing" (aka Palladium, aka NGSCB)?
<2> Pugsley: that much is true :/
<1> I am somewhat amazed that my husband said he doesn't want my computer when I get my new one. It is about 10 times faster than his .. but he hates change.
<3> Pugsley: All you have to do is call them to get XP renewed if you overuse your key.
<2> weboh: which costs the same amount of money as buying a new WinXP CD
<2> no thanks
<0> heh
<1> so I am going to give it away. My best friend has a daughter who is going to get it.
<1> and she can't wait
<3> IamKing: actually, it doesn't. I renenabled my Lan card too many times, so I had to call them for renewal of my key. I don't know of cases where you reinstall too often, and then don't get a renewal. You may be right.
<2> CometBaby: here's an article which will make things quite apparent that you also don't ever want to trust the big media companies with DRM schemes... "RIAA et al. Says CD Ripping and Backups not Fair Use" http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060215-6190.html
<1> Iam from what you saying tho .. it sounds like we are not going to have much choice.
<3> What is Palladium?
<2> if after reading that article you don't wish to execute all RIAA/MPAA members and affiliates, then you're dead from the waist up (no functional heart and no functional brain)
<2> weboh: it's Microsoft's "trusted computing" initiative that it started with a few hardware vendors to bring a combination of hardware and software technology to implement draconian DRM schemes upon the hapless populace
<3> And I thought they would stop at online activation. I suppose the media think Microsoft is being generous now.
<2> no, there's plenty of IT news articles talking about the TCG (Trusted Computing Group) and the TPM (Trusted Platform Module)...with plenty of commentary railing against them
<2> have been for quite some time
<0> they are media nazi's
<0> that's all
<0> they want to make sure yer coughing up the $$ every time u withness their property
<4> nazis. The plural of nazi .. is nazis.
<4> nazi's means 'of the nazi'
<4> and that's a lame use of the term.
<0> but when the CD replaced the C***ette Tape, did they offer u an upgrade? hell no. u get to pay a higher price for the content on the latest media
<3> IamKing: considering that we have a democracy of politicians, I think they should be reminded what it is like to be fired if they emulate through.
<4> anyone I disagree with - 'a nazi'
<2> weboh: they've already p***ed the fascist DMCA back in 1998
<2> Timur = feminazi
<2> weboh: DMCA = Digital Millennium Copyright Act
<3> IamKing: does this mean newer hardware is piracy proof?
<4> so stupid.
<4> yeah, I get laid, so I'm a 'feminazi'.
<5> Did Atty. Gen. Gonzales ask Congress to change the law to allow Presidential warrentless searches/taps?
<2> it may be much harder to inappropriately copy software on such a hardware platform with an OS and apps that support such hardware...but as with anything made by humans, it's probably not uncrackable
<2> Timur: you only get laid by being a masochistic submissive bitch to your butch of a woman ;)
<4> uh no, I have 2 hot girlfriends, and I'm mostly pretty controlling in bed. :)
<2> Timur: yeah, in your wet dreams
<1> Timur you are only a feminazi if you are a female and got laid by another female :)
<2> and they're both really just shemales
<4> no, in my reality
<1> so you can't be a feminazi
<1> lol
<2> Timur: which we all know is drug induced
<4> CB: whew, what a relief. :)
<2> which thus isn't really true reality
<4> IamKing: nah, I leave it to others to abuse drugs
<1> and you already know, but mischaracterized, why they are called feminazi's .. it's not because they get laid :)
<2> exactly
<4> feminazis.
<6> You know what they say about people that talk about big ***.....
<4> not feminazi's

<6> They ain't gettin' any.
<4> unless you mean 'of the feminazi'
<4> Tailor: is that what they say?
<4> well, they're not always right. :)
<1> I am talking about the feminazi bitches of the NOW :)
<6> Timur, that's exactly what they asy, and it's most often true.
<1> TT .. lol .. yeah it's probably true :)
<4> maybe in most cases; not mine.
<6> All talk.
<3> One of things of things I have learned to spite about microsoft is their introduction of a new breed of superviruses called adware and spyware. And what a joy adware is when it infects your computer. The makers of anti-virus programs have loved what microsoft have done with their web browser and OS.
<4> and speaking of, I gotta shower and go see magda. later
<6> magda?
<2> CometBaby: here's another good article for you to read: http://www.eff.org/Infrastructure/trusted_computing/20031001_tc.php
<2> TheTailor: his imaginary shemale dominatrix :P
<6> Yes, and he's meeting her in the shower :-)
<7> Good morning all
<2> her/him/it
<2> whaterver ;)
<2> lol
<1> hmm
<1> ok
<2> CometBaby: the key thing here is to be informed about this and have a healthy dose of paranoia about ever purchasing such hardware
<7> great
<2> CometBaby: which may mean avoiding buying pre-built systems from Dell and their ilk and just building your own from scratch with a mobo that won't have a TPM chip installed
<7> powerball winner from nebraska...probably gonna use the winnings to add a deck to their mobile home and give it a new coat of paint
<2> CometBaby: did you end up reading that 2nd article yet?
<2> CometBaby won? :P
<6> L0c0-, sooo, you lost 'eh?
<7> IamKing: TPM = that **** that would keep a comp from being able to d/l copyrighted crap?
<8> man ATI's website ****s, they make you run thru hoops to submit a trouble ticket, and half of the time thier links don't work for you to do it heh
<3> While copy protection is copyright protection, making the PC incapable of piracy is going to far. Maybe DVD need to store more, and hollywood and the CFR need to defend spending and tax cuts more.
<2> L0c0-: prevent you from viewing, playing, or running DRM-restricted ****
<7> that's ***uming they can get Vista to work on most computers :-P
<7> JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Acting Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday that his government will not hold contacts with any Palestinian government in which Hamas plays a role.
<2> weboh: no, copy protection != copyright protection...not when it goes beyond the bounds of preventing our fair use rights under copyright law
<7> well flippin' great...lets just **** on attempt at peace before we even start
<2> L0c0-: the problem is when people like us go to buy new computer parts (in this case, the motherboard), and then we find out that all the new mobos have that damned TPM chip installed
<7> yup
<7> IamKing: now i'm gonna have to start hording water, TP and older pc parts :-P
<2> and most people (who don't know how to build their own computer) will just buy the **** from Dell, HP, or whomever...which most likely such companies will NOT provide ANY options to get a non-TPM-ladened system
<7> yup
<7> wonder how long it'll be before crackers figure out a way to disable it :-P
<2> interestingly enough...Apple has mobos in both their Intel iMacs and MacBook Pro (their Intel laptop) do indeed have a TPM chip installed
<7> hmm
<2> L0c0-: I can only hope...but it would be wise to just attempt to avoid purchasing such hardware
<7> unless that becomes the standard
<2> well, it is a standard
<7> there could be $ to be made in building w/o maybe
<2> the question is whether the populace will ignorantly and/or apathetically allow it to become a ubiquitously-implemented standard
<7> of course they will
<2> and my guess is "yes" unless more knowledgeable people start making more bad press about it on national and local news channels and in local papers
<7> if it wasn't for them, virii would be no threat
<2> lol
<2> true that
<2> now this cartel (the TCG, the Trusted Computing Group) is going to act as Big Brother for the ignorant and apathetic populace
<7> i remember i laughed a couple of years ago when there was talk about licensing for internet/computer use
<2> people don't know...and people won't care (at least initially...but then it'll be too late)
<7> suddenly maybe it snot such a bad idea...then again, there's a test for driving and look at how many ****ty drivers are out there
<7> i think even w/ a flood of info, there will still be people that just don't know/care
<7> just like w/ virii/spam/malware/etc
<2> of course |bob was acting like an ***hat as he usually does thinking he knows **** about IT politics and current trends was poopooing this web site because he claims the guy is a hippie: http://www.aaxnet.com/editor/edit029.html#palladium
<8> my drivers test considted of 4 right hand turns
<8> consisted*
<2> but as you can see, this was published back in February 2003, and it clearly shows what direction Microsoft was going in...now 3 years later, we're seeing its first fruits coming to fruition
<7> i don't like the "it's for your own good" argument they make
<2> yep, exactly
<7> like M$ being generous...aww i'll lube you up first baby
<7> i best get dressed
<7> brb
<2> lol
<6> IamKing, so what is the overall effect? Can't copy copyrighted materials?
<2> well, we don't know if they might find ways around it, but that's one thing, yes...and the problem is not the existence of DRM-restricted materials...the problem is that media companies are going to start licensing content (basically, only allowing you to "rent" the content) without allowing you to actually purchase a true permanent copy of such content (like you can with pressed CDs, not burned CD-Rs)
<2> TheTailor: it all comes down to having the TPM chip present on the mobo will allow for some more effective and undoubtedly more draconian DRM schemes to allow the RIAA/MPAA and software companies to nickle and dime you on every app and data source
<2> I trust Apple at the moment with DRM because they have a fair DRM scheme and show no signs of changing that let alone their prices (although I haven't bought any of their content because I prefer to play my songs in a lossless format)
