The South was only "more" racist because there was more black/white interaction in the South, and when Blacks started moving up North en m***e, the racism took on similar methods, particularly at the institutional level (segregated schools, public housing specifically designed to warehouse them in designated areas, intimidation to prevent them from moving into "white" neighborhoods, etc.)

<9> Astrodog: You know what? I don't know. Racial tensions in Chicago are pretty awful, to be honest. At least in rural Alabama, blacks and whites have become accustomed to interacting with each other, even if it's still a little uneasy. Chicago remains a highly segregated city and there are still plenty of areas where blacks are flat-out not welcome.
