<5> i took a test instead
<1> Religious-minded voters comprise a big block of voters... avoiding religion in the campaigns would be stupid.
<6> sintient: Where?
<3> I thought John Kerry was Catholic?
<1> You can hate Bush all you want for mentioning religion too much... but the **** works.
<4> Every college.
<3> I thought that was an important campaign issue
<6> sintient: Not true. I know of many that do not require either.
<4> Virtually every degree has some basic requirements that they all share.

<1> Same reason Kerry wanted to emphasize that he was a religious person, even if his policies were not beholden to it.

<6> oax: Having kids who have applied to a number of them and reading through the course requirements.
<5> "based on my sample of one, almost all colleges DO require US history and US Government. Also Texas government"
<4> In Texas the US history and governent and the state government are spefically required.
<3> Brak: thank you
<4> There you go.
<2> Most colleges require a couple semesters of history for a liberal arts degree, not necessarily US history
<4> All UT branch school all A&M branch school.
<1> oax... it's a fairly safe statement to say most do that... since it allows for exceptions and you can read the graduation requirements for almost every college/university on-line and see that they typically require just humanities, social sciences, western vs non-western credit requirements, etc, without any specifics on US government in general.
<4> They required US history and government for an engineering degree.
<6> That may be Texas. In the New York and New England areas I've never seen that specific requirement. Just general. High Schools here do, but not colleges.
<3> I had to havae it in high school
<5> sintient UT? i did compute science at UT. i had to take us history & govt
<5> computer
<4> That is what I just said.
<4> We have coroborating evidence.
<1> I'd imagine that US History is one of the most popular cl***es taken to fill any western social studies requirements though... people grow up learning the bits and pieces.
<5> computer science is not engineering at texas. it's natural sciences
<8> i'm sky high
<2> Computer science is "natural" science?
<2> .

<1> Got to p*** that Constitution test, etc. to graduate.
<3> pahahaha
<3> didn't get one of those
<3> I mean
<3> I had to p*** on in my government and us history cl***es
<1> Like almost everything else... tends to vary state to state... and if you graduated years ago, you might pre-date the requirements in your state.
<3> 04
<3> hehe
<3> p*** one*
<3> hell
<3> I had to read a few of the Federalist Papers
<1> Not that it does much good... the Constitution test in Illinois was more like a simple trivia test that didn't require hardly any understanding of it, application of it, or rationale behind it.
<10> I had to take one Am Hist and one Am Gov't cl*** to complete the requirements for a university degree in 1992
<1> A kid might know that the number of electors = # US reps + # senators for each State + 3 in DC... but the rationale behind the Electoral College and its application etc... not so much.

<1> Here at U of I, they have a general cultural studies (western), requirement that could include US history if you so choose... but it is up to the student (unless he's a US history major, poli-sci major, etc where the individual college requires it as opposed to the University in general)

<11> First off, now that I have been voiced, I'm going to say hello to everyone and wish a good evening to all in efnet #politics.
<3> uh oh
<3> salutations
<11> Second thing I'm going to say, I'd like to thank everyone for coming out and putting in to have a good suitable conversation and being good listeners.

<11> Now, let's get down to the nit and grit and discuss some issues that seriously affect us Americans.
<3> hey hey
<3> what ya got?
<11> Well, the top issue I can think of right now that is really boiling alot of people's blood is the issue of state vs federal rights and where some states see the federal government overstepping their bounds.
<3> welll
<3> top issue?
<11> Well I guess it's a bunch of different issues ranging from stem cell research to abortion to medical marijuana to gun control and everything in between.
<1> Heh... might be one of the most important issues, but I doubt most people have any idea about it. As far as most people are concerned, that fight died with the Civil War.
<3> well I certainly would guess the top issue has somethign to do with the Middle East
<11> The thing that I'd like to know from you all is all this politically motivated rhetoric or do the states, primarily democratic blue states, have a valid concern here?
<10> and that 'eminent domain' decision last year
<10> 'primarily' ?
<1> Democratic blue states want the feds to have the power to make all other states unable to ban abortions.

<12> uhh beavis and butthead is on
<11> It seems with a republican controlled white house and both houses of congress, there isn't too much fuss coming out states that are predominatly controlled by republicans but those invoking the criticism of the government are the more 'liberal' states wishing to inact laws that the administration and those in congress see as 'renegade activist judges' and those lawmakers who wish to override federal rule for state rule.
<1> oax... that's where repubs jump ship on their ideology.
<10> l984 seems confused
<3> well
<3> part of it is playing the politician

<13> it's a prettyfunny sitcom.
<5> yeah pretty good
<10> "the republicans"? all of them? who besides the democrats are claiming that?
<13> you start off thinking that it's borin

<2> The 34% number was pure bull****, anybody who cites it is lying
<3> hmm
<3> 1984
<3> I don't think so
<4> It's a poll?
<12> RATT kicks ***
<1> l984... there's a good chance that many of them do... but it is hard to say that they would have preferred Kerry with any certainty... the polls don't ask that question.
<4> Where did that number come from then apologist?
<2> Are you addressing me?
<3> yeah, considering the alternative would be Kerry, I do not think many are regretting not voting for him
<4> Funny how you knew.
<1> And not forgetting that a lame duck president can do unpopular things since he doesn't have to worry about re-election... he can do what he feels needs to be done in spite of popular opinion.
