<asnook> hi there. I've been an OpenBSD user for several years here. For the first time I just installed Open on a dual core system. I was just wondering if anyone knows whether dmesg should show a cpu0 and a cpu1 or just the cpu0?
<xibalba> should show cpu0 and cpu1
<asnook> ok, that's what i thought
<xibalba> did you use the smp kernel?
<asnook> yes, bsd.mp
<xibalba> check the bios maybe
<asnook> that's what i thought. maybe turning on hyperthreading will help?
<xibalba> is it dual core or hyperthreaded
<asnook> dual core
<asnook> it's an AMD opteron
<NicM> bsd.mp should show it
<NicM> hmm
<NicM> is it actual dual-cpu or dual-core/hyper-whstsit?
<asnook> just dual-core. not dual-cpu
<NicM> if it appears as dual-cpu, openbsd will deal wth it fine
<NicM> if it requires something special, it is doubtful
<asnook> that's what i'm wondering about though. Should dual cores show up like dual-CPU machines with a cpu0 and a cpu1?
<NicM> do they act like dual-CPU boxes?
<asnook> that's what i don't know. This is my first experience with a dual core system
<dhartmei> http://www.armorlogic.com/openbsd_information_server_compatibility_list.html?action=detail&id=x4200
<dhartmei> that's a sunfire x4200 with 2x dual-core opteron, shows up as cpu0-3
<asnook> interesting
<NicM> seems like dual-core turns up like dual proc
<NicM> maybe poke around in your bios
<asnook> http://groups.google.com/group/lucky.openbsd.misc/browse_thread/thread/ec846561f17e5e44/c906550f84391b8f?lnk=st&q=opteron+openbsd&rnum=29#c906550f84391b8f
<asnook> tjat
<asnook> that's how mine shows up
<asnook> very similar to that
<dhartmei> well, it should show GENERIC.MP, at least :)
<asnook> well ya, with the other kernel obviously
<dhartmei> maybe boot something else and make sure it's really dual-core, then check the bios
<NicM> yeah go see if the hardware is dual core
<NicM> dhartmei speaks sense as usual
<asnook> ya, i've got a gentoo disk that i could try
<asnook> :)
<asnook> http://groups.google.com/group/lucky.openbsd.misc/browse_thread/thread/60e7ba1e009bd886/468ddc97a47164b9?lnk=st&q=openbsd+dual+core+cpu0&rnum=3#468ddc97a47164b9
<asnook> that's actually what i meant to post
<NicM> that url is far too long
<dhartmei> ah, yes, if the cpu0 line states 'Dual Core', but there is no cpu1, there's something wrong
<dhartmei> never had one, just dual/quad cpus
<asnook> ok, that's what i figured
<dhartmei> they're rather new, introduced last year, right?
<asnook> ya
<NicM> i'm guessing this is another piece of hardware to go in the "i wish i could afford" category
<dhartmei> make -j 16 can be impressive, but for production i've never seen it pay off :)
<asnook> it's for a mail server. just needed to upgrade to something with some more horsepower for spam******in
<dhartmei> maybe for a cpu-bound apache server
<dhartmei> spam******in is single-process perl, no?
<dhartmei> what's the second cpu going to do there? :)
<NicM> he's going to take it out and post it to me
<NicM> sorry
<dhartmei> half a dual-core? :)
<NicM> heh
<asnook> good point. so i guess it won't really matter
<dhartmei> the non-smp kernel might actually be faster :)
<asnook> really?
<dhartmei> sure, less locking overhead
<dhartmei> and, sadly, i386 (32-bit, non amd64) mode might even beat that
<asnook> ok. this machine is supposed to replace an AMD Athalon XP 2800. So with it running just running single core 1.82Ghz will it outperform that machine?
<asnook> i know that you can't really compare Ghz these days
<asnook> but as long as I can get more performance on this machine than the other one i'll be happy
<dhartmei> possibly. for spam***issin-heavy mail-servers, the disks (scsi) will make much more of a difference
<asnook> right, cuz it's having to access the disk non-stop
<dhartmei> i ***ume you already run it in daemon mode :)
<asnook> ya
<dhartmei> high-performance programming in perl, eh? :)
<asnook> :)
<asnook> ok, well thanks a lot! i guess i'll just have to compare some benchmarks and see how it goes
<_langly_> hello is the atheros chipset 5005gs supported ?
<NicM> hahah
<_langly_> i purchased a pcmcia card and worked very extrange because it takes the ip from the access point dhcp server but before it doesn't run no ping internal / internet network
<NicM> _langly_, look at the HCL
<NicM> _langly_, www.openbsd.org
<_langly_> i looked and can say that on freebsd gets recognized as a atheros 5212
<_langly_> but it takes me to the situation explained
<_langly_> so very extrange
<_langly_> i can donate 1 card if some developer wants to do testing and porting this card to the OS :)
<_langly_> my 17¤ to the project :D
<dhartmei> Reyk Floeter <reyk@openbsd.org> did ath(4) in openbsd, ask him :)
<_langly_> ok dhartmei thanks
<_langly_> i'm meditating to buy a zaurus c3200 is easy to install openbsd on it?
<dhartmei> same as c3000, i ***ume. compared to i386 it's odd and brittle, but it's documented
<_langly_> ok i'm going to sleep dhartmei thanks for anwering all the questions :)
<_langly_> good night :)
<newbie> Hi
<newbie> I am having problems with ftp connections to some servers through a firewall running openbsd-3.9 and ftp-proxy with rdr rules to redirect tcp traffic to port 8021(listening port for ftp-proxy)
<xibalba> what kinds of problems?
<newbie> I see server timeout alot in the logs
<newbie> and the connection never gets established
<xibalba> does it work if ftp-proxy is off?
<xibalba> whoa
<newbie> I found the problem
<newbie> I was trying to restrict the source port to be the 8021 listening but that is oxy-moron since the listen port and source port can't be the same
<hellchi> while your installing opebsd and you get the message available didks are: wd0 wd1
<hellchi> is there anyway to tell which disk is which (by capacity or rpm)

<mihaipbs> an issue i try to resolve for months: mplayer on my desktop goes unexpectedly on mute after a while - did someone experienced this until now ?
<mihaipbs> not much on the web about his behaviour
<mihaipbs> the fact is that mixerctl settings are moved to mute, but i can't figure who is doing this and how to do them read-only
<klepto> anyone here have a synaptics touchpad? how do you turn off tap clicking?
