<0> my old roomate liked to have two mice
<0> one on each side
<1> well, I have 6 USB-enabled machines on my desk
<2> hehe
<1> switching my favourite mouse-keyboard set between them all the time is growing annoying
<2> use x2x
<1> if you're talking about X11, they don't all run it, and I need input devices for access to the BIOS as well
<2> ahh
<2> hmm kauth + network based console input...
<1> I could get a nice KVM, but there are none that support HD15, DVI and 13W3, together with PS/2, USB and miniDIN :)
<3> heh
<4> i'd expect avocent to offer something like that - for a horrendous price
<5> man, I have not been keeping track of my gpg/pgp keys
<0> heya
<0> the founder of flickr has a book about building scalable websites
<6> bleh

<7> anyone have a good setup for making sure your servers are up?
<0> look at nagios
<0> http://www.reallygothic.com/NetBSD.png
<0> anyone see what's different?
<7> the r
<7> btw thanks for nagios
<0> hey, I didn't write it :)
<0> not the R
<8> poseing to the right instead of left?
<0> yep
<0> that was the recommendation of that company that reviewed netbsd's logo
<0> going that direction should give a sense of going somewhere
<0> instead of looking like it's going backwards, or just oddly placed
<0> alright, i'm headed to bed
<6> mspo: the (R) ?
<6> obviously we wave the flag back and forth, as in rah rah rah
<6> if you can't handle liberal left-moving flags, then don't wave it! ;)
<5> is there a netbsd ssl howto?
<9> for what?
<10> anyone know what this means in the daily security output: Checking special files and directories. var/log/lastlog: gid (45, 0) ??
<11> i means it is GID 45
<11> it should be 0
<10> thanks :)
<10> yeled: hmm... somethings off... the group of lastlog is wheel and wheel is 0
<11> oh maybe it should be 45 then :p
<10> 45 is utmp ?!
<11> that is correct
<11> lastlog is utmp
<10> is lastlogx and wtmp and wtmpx alaso utmp ?
<10> -a
<11> probably
<10> hmm..they are wheel on my systems..
<10> weird
<12> hm..
<12> : undefined reference to `audio_attach_mi'
<12> any idea what audio_attach_mi belongs to?
<12> >_>;
<12> trying to compile my kernel, and I guess adjustkernel took out something important
<12> ah, I think I found it ><;
<12> how stupid of me <_<;
<4> |/-\
<13> hi, maybe smbd knows a way to change NIC's mac address? it is a rlt8139 card... i need to change the mac so my ISP could give me an IP (i can't go to my ISP and ask that they change my old mac into new one, it's a long story...)
<14> Edvinas_A: you can't with netbsd. buy a new 8139, they are dirt cheap.
<13> btw i'm new to netbsd, have been using linux debian/gnu for a year now... and I want to try netBSD... but without internet access it's useless
<13> i can't change the network card... that's the thing...
<1> smbd has nothing to do with changing MAC addresses
<13> i need the one mac (i've lost that nic), but I still have written the mac...
<13> smbd-somebody, not samba daemon ;)
<1> bah :)
<13> i know that it isn't possible in practise... but theoretically... maybe i need to patch the kernel ? or something like that?... as I said i'm new to netBSD architecture... only been using linux... and there it's not a problem to do so, like ifconfig hw ether mac:.....
<13> i've seen questions like that in forums, but there are no answers yet...
<1> you could patch the driver in the kernel, sure
<1> but chaning MAC addresses isn't the Right Thing
<13> i know... as
<13> I said, it's complicated :/
<13> so basically i download the kernel source'es from netbsd, locate the driver (i hope it's written in C), and find the place where it gets the mac address from hardware, and at that point just change the static MAC, yes?
<14> you "need the on nic" ?
<14> one
<14> what's so special about it?
<13> yes, one only...
<15> b/c his isp is using that for access

<15> they expect a certain mac address and he's trying to clone it
<13> i've a new nic (with new MAC), but my ISP "gives" me my internet only to the old MAC(i've lost the old nic, it's long story...)
<1> Edvinas_A: it's C, ofcourse. Changing the MAC address probably involves writing it to a PCI configuration register
<14> why do they expect only one mac address? some required hardware they provide?
<13> it's old and ****ty hardware they use...
<15> carneous: it's not uncommmon at all
<1> carneous: a broadcast physical medium? Like older Cable setups?
<14> MadScribe: it's probably also a TOS
<13> i go through cable modems...
<13> old ones :)
<14> so?
<15> yah, he's facing legal implications
<15> he just wants us to give him the gun
<1> MadScribe: you, being American, shouldn't have any problems whatsoever giving guns to anyone
<1> ;)
<13> i've tried to explain it to admin(of the ISP), he said that i'm lying and so on... well what's left than for me to do?
<14> Edvinas_A: but, you are lying
<13> i've been "cloning" my old mac for a year now...
<14> to him.
<13> no I'm not, that's the point
<14> I'm not seeing it
<14> and anyway
<14> netbsd can't do it
<14> so why are you here again?
<13> probably say, that i will try to use freebsd...
<13> thanks for help anyway
<14> what's with the sudden rush on changing MAC's in here?
<1> what sudden rush
<14> there was another recently
<14> with heated debate yada yada
<1> hmm, don't recall
<16> hi kids
<0> hollo
<16> herro
<16> mspo you ircing from a proxy?
<0> umm, maybe
<0> why?
<16> gw1.cox.com just looks like a proxy to me
<16> just curious
<0> no idea
<16> ?
<0> I imagine there's a lot of secret stuff going on at gw1.cox.com
<0> it's not my responsibility :)
<16> I see
<16> you work for cawx?
<0> yeah
<16> whatcha do
<0> I'm a sysadmin
<16> coo
<0> it's okay
<16> windows98?
<16> or me?
<0> being a sysadmin is okay
<0> I'm interviewing this afternoon for a different job, actually
<16> i just finished a project for ibm here in hawaii
<16> and im moving back to los angeles next month
<16> so im in the same boat
<0> sounds nicer than atlanta :)
<16> i hate looking for a job
<0> well, it's an internal move
<16> atlanta weather ****s
<0> so nothing too exciting
<0> I might move desks :)
<16> nice
<0> but I would be more of a desginer/analyst than an operations guy
<16> do you get your own office if things go well?
<0> umm no
<0> just cubes
<0> if I get a team of guys, possibly a bigger cube
<0> if my team of guys gets a team of guys, I might get an office
<16> at least you get to do more interesting work as a systems designer
<0> yeah, and I get to return my pager
<0> which is good
<16> ehhee
