<4> hello, I've been google'ing for netbsd upgrade information (not using the sysinst app) and have only found: http://www2.giganet.net/~mark/NetBSD/howtos/upgrade-howto.html. Is this still current (I'm upgrading from 1.6.2 ro 3.0)
<5> no, it's pretty old
<5> basically, upgrading is easy if you have the .tgz sets
<5> 1) reboot with new kernel
<5> 2) for each set EXCEPT etc.tgz, in /, pax -zrpe -f /path/to/set.tgz
<4> ...ok
<5> 3) etcupdate -s /path/to/etc.tgz
<5> (follow prompts)
<5> you'll probably want to back up /etc just in case
<4> ;-)
<5> you'll probably want to make sure the kernel you boot has COMPAT_16
<5> (GENERIC does)
<4> ok, I was going to use GENERIC anyway
<5> and I'd upgrade to 3.1, not 3.0, unless you've got a special reason
<4> its probably 3.1 (i386), I'm just not in the same location at the moment
<4> thanks riz
<4> '1) reboot with new kernel' means unpack the kernel set in the same manner as describe above for the other sets?
<5> well, you should mv /netbsd /onetbsd first, but yeah
<4> s/describe/described/
<5> (that way you can recover if you need to)
<5> you may want to upgrade your bootblocks after, too
<4> ok....perhaps I should document this and put it somewhere (or have I just completeled screwed up with my google search?)
<2> there's pam problems as well iirc
<4> I'd use sysinst...but is just doesn't seem to want to play nice at this stage. What pam 'problems' occour?
