<0> mv: cannot stat `Kyuu??\\?mv\\ BitTorrent-4.0.4\\ Kyuu???': No such file or directory
<1> mv Kyuu* whatever
<0> ty
<2> is there a way I can do a clean reinstall of ubuntu without losing everything?
<3> back up
<2> well my other drive is freaking read only
<2> so now I don't know what to do
<4> can you do a remote redhat as install over a serial port?

<2> Is there a way to get rid of the read only on my other drive?
<5> is it a windows formatted partition?
<5> if so writing to ntfs from linux is shaky at best
<2> yeah
<5> dont have another spare drive?
<2> damn it..how else will I back up my files
<5> some old 6giger
<2> noep
<2> nope
<5> burn it, get another hd
<5> sent it to another computer via network?
<5> alot of options
<2> I have a good burning program but I forgot what it's called :P
<2> I don't even necessarily have to reinstall if I could fix those damn problems
<5> better to fix it
<5> there will alway be more problems, better to fix it if possible
<2> well, I had gnome as my default desktop...and ever since I installed xfce, it messed everything up
<2> I uninstalled xfce
<2> and I have "exec gnome-session" in .xinitrc
<2> but I get some errors when it starts up now
<2> if I could get it configured the same way it was when I first installed
<2> I didn't even HAVE a .xinitrc
<5> look at what changed
<5> then undo
<6> how do you run a .PL file
<5> or rename that .xinitrc and restart
<5> webdawg: with perl
<5> perl somefile.pl
<6> thanks
<2> well..it's only problems with my x servers, so I won't necessarily have to reinstall
<2> I just wanted to start over fresh
<6> what errors
<2> if I could figure out how to theme KDE, it'll all be good. I won't even use gnome.

<2> actually gnome runs fine
<2> I just get something I never got before I installed xfce...xfce wants to be your default freaking desktop
<7> hey all
<7> can anyone tell me the best way to determine a list of files altered directly in a cvs repository from a local original copy?
<7> i.e. someone ran a script that modified files directly in the repository and now I need to find out exactly what was changed.
<8> ls -lt or ls -lc maybe?
<7> IdiotStic that would return all files. All of them were touched and many of them have since been altered through regular cvs channels. I'm thinking I'm going to have to use my local copy of the repository to discover the diffs.
<7> I know that i can write a bash script to do it but I was hoping that cvs may provide a simpler solution.
<8> the -lc shows creation time and not modification times
<7> I know that I can do a cvs commit and it will show me all the files that differ, so that is also an option. I just don't want to risk actually committing the changes until I have a copy of the changelist.
<2> I wonder if I shouldn't give debian a try instead of reinstalling ubuntu
<2> what's the big difference between the 2?
<8> age of the packages
<7> mike__ tons. Too many to just tick off.
<2> ah
<7> IdiotStic hehe. Yeah that too
<2> Well from what I understand, unbuntu is more for inexperienced users
<8> it is more freindly, but can do what debian can
<2> I might just go with ubuntu being as everything works in it ;)
<8> depends on how deep you want to go as with any distro
<2> I don't know if I'm crazy about sudo though.
<8> you can set a root p***word easily so you can use su
<2> yeah
<7> sudo is a great resource for allowing specific admin access to users or groups without giving away the farm
<2> that's what I did
<7> it's also a great way to get logs of what they do
<7> I prefer sudo to setroot too, but I'm unsure the the specific security implications.
<8> it's designed to keep you from blowing your foot off if you forget you're su'd as root
<2> I might as well go back with ubuntu..It's hard to decide
<2> I've never tried out debian so I don't know what to expect really
<7> gentoo ftw (ibflamewar)
<9> can anyone tell me where to put html files on a linux installation of apache
<8> mike__: virtually everything you learned in ubuntu works in debian. ubuntu has later packages and more graphics in a default install so it may be suited to higher horsepower machines if you choose a stock install
<8> Lufan: /var/www is pretty standard if it isn't set to use the users dir. if so it's /home/username/public_html
<9> thank you IdiotStic
<7> Lufan it's also distro-specific
<7> Gentoo would be /var/www/<virtualhost>/<apache dirs>
<10> anyone can help me with slackware installing fine but when i try to boot it gives me a blank screen, also if i try to install lil tothe mbr it gives me an error
