<planet> Hi
<bloofar> graz
<bloofar> graz! wake up
<TheUni> i've currently got 2 hard drives setup in raid 1 (software, md). i'm reinstalling linux. what do i need to do to be sure nothing happens to the data?
<jumpy> dont make a new fs or overwrite data
<jumpy> dont make a new partition table
<TheUni> so once it's reinstalled
<TheUni> how do i install mdadm and recreate the mirror ?
<jumpy> you didnt install mdadm the first time?
<TheUni> yea
<TheUni> this isn't the os partition
<TheUni> i have 3 drives. 2 are a mirror for data. the other is the os.
<TheUni> i'm replacing the os drive
<jumpy> ah
<jumpy> then just replace the os, setup mdadm the way you had it setup
<jumpy> i dont see what mirror your need to create if you arnt changing data on the mirrord drives
<TheUni> jumpy: i'm just afraid that when i recreate the mirror it's gonna wipe.
<jumpy> im sure there is information in the readme, i dont see why it would recreate a mirror when there is already one there
<jumpy> best to back up either way
<TheUni> yea.. but the old drive is out already :\
<TheUni> guess i'll just boot to the livecd and mount one of the drives as read-only, then backup

<Nameeater> how do I get a file offered to me thru DCC on IRSSI? /dcc get /dcc get nick and /dcc get nick filename isnt working for me :(
<Idle247> ha, I love how on 'swordfish', their 'hacker' is 'axel torvalds'
<Idle247> dcc get should do it
<Nameeater> hmm wonder why it isnt working
<Nameeater> does a new window come up with the dl speed/amount complete etc?
<Idle247> window? no
<Idle247> shows up in your console
<Nameeater> 17:54 DCC can't connect to 76.213.202.155 port 1024
<Nameeater> must be my problem
<Idle247> yea... there you go
<Nameeater> hmm
<Nameeater> how do I change what port for it to use for dcc? dcc_port ? and do I need to restart irssi to swap port?
<Idle247> uh
<Idle247> its his port
<Idle247> not yours
<doll> is it possible to boot .ISO off of USB memory stick?
<Idle247> no
<Idle247> you cant boot an iso
<Idle247> some installers are capable of booting from a usb stick tho
<Idle247> theres a special procedure, but theres no way to boot from an iso, aside from writing it to phyiscal media
<Idle247> or, in a vm..
<doll> ok
<doll> i want to install gentoo linux, but i dont have blank CD
<doll> but i do have USB memory stick that can fit that ISO
<Idle247> oh man
<Idle247> just, stab yourself in the neck... its about on par with pain
<doll> um
<doll> as much as that sounds exiting, i think i'm going to p***
<Idle247> ;)
<howto> ;)
<Idle247> I'm sure someone has done it
<doll> i'm pretty sure too
<Idle247> of course, you can install gentoo from inside any running linux
<doll> i was hoping for that someone to be here though :)
<Idle247> so, you could easily get any CLI distro to do it, you dont even need a gentoo disk
<doll> what do you mean?
<Idle247> try #gentoo , they have some ricers there :P
<Idle247> well
<Idle247> theres lots of USB live distros
<Idle247> any of them would suffice
<doll> suffice for what?
<doll> i want to install gentoo on my box
<Idle247> yes
<Idle247> will suffice to install it
<doll> hows live usb linux will help me?
<Idle247> all it needs is pretty much tar
<Idle247> you run it
<doll> i dont get it.. i'm sorry, can you explain more
<Idle247> then you copy the data files to the disk, and chroot
<Idle247> gentoo isn't like debian/mandriva/redhat/ubuntu
<Idle247> you need to install it manually
<Idle247> theres no 'simple' installer
<doll> that i know :)
<Idle247> you dont need gentoo specific tools, since there is none
<doll> ok
<doll> i guess you right
<doll> i might give it a try
<doll> thanks
<tacosalad> Hey, does Ethereal support wireless networks?
<magickal1> yes
<pons> I need a tool to clone linux system from one server to another server, what would be thw best....?
<Idle247> cpio
<Idle247> cp -a
<Idle247> etc
<Qwell> dd
<Idle247> if you have the same sized disks, sure
<Qwell> dd+fdisk+resize2fs
<Idle247> thats so bad
<Qwell> nah
<Idle247> and only works on ext2/3
<Qwell> can't murderFS be resized?
<Idle247> never heard of it
<Qwell> ***hat
<Qwell> reiser :P
