<0> if you'd read that you wouldn't be in this mess
<0> now get to it :P
<1> hehehe - im off to listen to podcast laters
<2> im reading through it but I have everything it looks like
<2> Grr!!
<3> hurrah
<2> This time when I do an ls I get anonymous_enable=YES
<2> anon_upload_enable=NO
<2> anon_mkdir_write_enable=NO
<2> 226 Transfer done (but failed to open directory) *** I mean...
<4> when you do a "ls" you get .... ????
<2> 226 Transfer done (but failed to open directory)
<2> port cmd successful...here comes the dir list....transfer done(but failed to open dir)
<2> Perhaps my permissions are wrong ?
<2> Okay I think I found something, on the howto it says to emerge =net-ftp/vsftpd-2.0.3

<2> There are no ebuilds of that, but when I emerge net-ftp/vsftpd I get net-ftp/vsftp-2.0.3-r1 ...
<2> but before I emerge that on the HOWTO it says to echo "=net-ftp/vsftpd-2.0.3 ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
<4> all that does it set your system to use the latest vsftpd instead of the stable one
<2> Gaw....Omfg!!!!
<3> blimey
<4> you logged in as anonymous ?
<3> I might know.
<5> would anyone care to help me out with moving a DSA key into my known_hosts file please
<2> Omfg...Gonna snap Lol
<4> jahshua: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.53b/htmldoc/Chapter8.html
<5> thanks P38
<4> http://pangea.stanford.edu/computerinfo/unix/netcommands/sshauth.html
<5> nice one
<2> when I try to ./filter cleartext > p***wd_ftp
<2> I get no such file or dir
<2> after that in the HOWTO it says ...And that's it! Suddenly john can log in with the p***word "secret".
<4> logan5: we did this the other night
<4> this exact same thing
<2> Ok when I cd /var/ftp I get permission denied
<2> Could that possibly be the problem? Because /var/ftp is where my ftp is -
<4> yes that is probably your problem
<4> are you root ?
<2> no im my user-
<2> I tried it on my user to see if it would do that--
<4> su to root and look at the permissions on /var/ftp
<2> how do I look at the permissions :(
<4> ls -l
<2> lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 17 Feb 21 01:41 packages -> /var/ftp/packages
<2> Hmmm How would I change those so anybody could see/access those
<4> that doesnt look right
<4> did you do that or was that created by the install
<2> I don't really know :(
<2> But do you think that those permissions might be the problem as to why I can't see anything on the ftp?
<4> read this: http://www.siliconvalleyccie.com/linux-hn/ftp-server.htm
<4> dont just follow the steps... try to understand what they are doing
<2> Dude
<2> Why not just throw google at me
<2> But thanks
<4> Dude if you learn nothing else from this, Linux is all about reading and learning.... it is not about having other people think for you. if you want that, go back to windows. Vsftpd is not hard to configure, but you are starting from scratch. You have to get some basics down and understood before any of this is going to make sense.
<4> So, read the doc
<2> Great pep talk P38
<4> thanks
<6> :O
