<RayTracer> we run a few linux servers here and my boss says he forgot one of the root passwords
<RayTracer> but the machine hasn't been rebooted in 2 years
<RayTracer> and doesn't want it to go down
<P38> sweet... tornado warnings 2 hours away
<znx> "Can anybody tell me where i can obtain open source code for gentoo."
<znx> hehe
<nerdX> linux init=/bin/bash (single user), mount -o remount,rw / -- then set pass, then mount -o remount,ro / and reboot.
<RayTracer> it's a slick red hat 7 machine
<RayTracer> there's a terminal with root on it though
<nerdX> tadaaaaa
<kroko> nerdX, where should i do that ?
<kroko> after reboot when lilo starts ?
<nerdX> kroko, when you boot up, boot into single user (init 1). then at the prompt: mount -o remount,rw / && passwd
<nerdX> then set a new pass.
<nerdX> then: mount -o remount,ro /
<nerdX> you can also change your /etc/inittab to init 3 for multiuser again before you reboot. make sure you do that before you set the mounted volume back to read-only.

<nerdX> i've used slackware for umm.. 8 years? i know it fairly well. ;)
<kroko> this is my 2nd or 3rd day so it`s a little difference :D
<nerdX> hehe
<nerdX> i love slackware. she shells anyway. i'd use fedora core for webhosting.
<nerdX> hehe.
<kroko> the inittab will be edited after i reboot ? becaue i cant edit inittab since i dont have root access
<nerdX> kroko, you shouldn't need to be "root" if it's in single-user.
<nerdX> there is no user..
<bofh`> slackware is the bestest!
<P38> gentoo is #1
<kroko> ok i`ll try that
<kroko> brb
<nerdX> kroko, the only thing is, you have to remount root (/) as read-write before you can save changes..
<RayTracer> I use redhat/fedora core mainly and sometimes freebsd
<RayTracer> I IRC from a freebsd shell
<RayTracer> FreeBSD prime.gushi.org 4.10-RELEASE-p2 FreeBSD 4.10-RELEASE-p2 #0: Fri Sep 10 21:53:55 EDT 2004 danm@prime.gushi.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PRIME49 i386
<nerdX> just set it back to read-only after you've edited the appropriate parts.
<kroko> nerdX, so i reboot , when it askes for a username i type : mount -o remount,rw / && passwd
<kroko> and after that i`m setting it to ro
<nerdX> kroko, naw..
<nerdX> hehe
<nerdX> let's do this over. :P
<nerdX> you're using lilo boot loader?
<kroko> yup
<kroko> i typed linux single
<nerdX> okay. at the lilo prompt: linux single
<kroko> and 'enter'
<nerdX> yes.
<nerdX> it should boot to the single user bash prompt.
<nerdX> there is no user..
<kroko> yup , but it asked for a username
<kroko> and password
<nerdX> so forget loggin in
<kroko> that was the weird thing
<nerdX> huh.
<nerdX> okay, try "linux=/bin/bash" instead of "linux single".
<nerdX> err
<nerdX> linux init=/bin/bash
<kroko> ok
<kroko> and that should do the trick ?
<nerdX> that should login as single user but shouldn't be asking user/login.
<kroko> ok i`ll try that
<nerdX> the only thing is it may have changed over the years.
<kroko> brb
<nerdX> i haven't needed to do that for a long time. hehe.
<kroko> i wish i wouldn`t have to do this but i guess it`s a basic thing and i cant setup other stuff without the root pass
<kroko> brb
<nerdX> i hope they didn't "secure" it more. haha.
<nerdX> it was like slackware 9.1 or something i last had to reset root passwd.
<nerdX> if that fails, then boot the slackware cd: enter your keyboard stuff.. login as "root".. don't run setup. just try: "mount /dev/hdx /mnt" (where x is the letter corresponding to your disk drive).
<nerdX> then "/mnt/usr/bin/passwd" and set a new pass.
<kroko> back
<kroko> it worked :)
<kroko> thanks nerdX , linux init=/bin/bash did the trick
<nerdX> wooo!
<nerdX> hehe.
<nerdX> yah, it should. ;)
<nerdX> now don't forget root pass!
<nerdX> hehe
<kroko> i wont , although i can reset it anytime now so it`s much safer :)
<Jy> make it 123456 so you remember

<nerdX> hehe
<nerdX> make it 123456 so i can login.
<kroko> i cant remember a 6 digit number
<kroko> i`ll stick to 1
<kroko> ;-)
<nerdX> well, actually, i think slackware /etc/securetty doesn't allow remote root login by default.
<kroko> i dont have ssh open , and my router is blocking most of incoming ports
<Jy> no it does
<Jy> opps wrong channel
<Jy> sigh
<nerdX> i was gonna say...
<nerdX> all pts/x are commented out by default. hehe.
<kroko> well , need to hit the road , thanks i`ll be back later
<nerdX> welcome. have fun! :)
<P38> kroko: "p1" is a good password for root
<nerdX> hah.
<znx> i use p38
<znx> ;)
<P38> heh good one
<square> http://www.thomson-europe.com/UK_EN/image.php?page=details&rubr=Projection+TV,DLP+projection+TV,44DLW616
<square> my new tv :D
<nerdX> omg
<nerdX> dlp is awesome.
<nerdX> eats lcd alive.
<nerdX> hehe.
<square> yah
<square> i cant wait
<square> hdready too
<square> woot
<nerdX> insane technology but it was developed by texas intruments in like 1988.
<square> (no, thats right the uk are slow and still havent got hdtv :( )
<nerdX> i was only 8 years old and i knew what dlp was. haha.
<square> im not sure what dlp really is :P
<square> it was the HD ready i wanted
<nerdX> dlp in a quick sense are tiny little mirrors that reflect different shades of coloured light by the angle at which they move.
<nerdX> they're tiny ass little mirrors on tiny ass hinges.
<nerdX> hehe.
<square> heh
<nerdX> and they move so fast you can never tell.
<nerdX> basically each pixel is a mirror.
<nerdX> nerrrrd!
<nerdX> square, that tv has got to be super expensive.
<square> 18hundred gbp
<nerdX> that's actually not bad.
<nerdX> that's only like 3200 usd.
<nerdX> my buddy bought a dlp projector and it cost $5600 cad.
<nerdX> hehe.
<square> yeh
<nerdX> znx, where's my ops?
<znx> on the end of my toe
<znx> still want it?
<nerdX> give it to me.
<nerdX> haha, wait..
<nerdX> haha
<nerdX> that doesn't read over so well.
<nerdX> haha
<nerdX> 12:00:42 up 5 days, 6:51, 3 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
<nerdX> booooooo.
<nerdX> haha. 153 day uptime down the drain when the power supply fuct off on me.
<znx> 16:59:43 up 41 days, 18:39, 3 users, load average: 0.50, 0.58, 0.59
<znx> hrmm didnt know that :)
<nerdX> i was on top for linux-noob uptime.
<dropz> 16:59:53 up 27 days, 22:57, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
<nerdX> benje went down and so did kobras..
<nerdX> now me.
<nerdX> haha
<dropz> less on this one :)
<nerdX> i think benje.de is on top again.
