I'm having huge problems installing linux on a recently acquired Proliant 8000 server. Is there anybody around that can give me some pointers to look at? I'm at a lost :( <5> yeah, sell it and buy a dell instead <5> :) <6> It was a steal <5> you robbed it ? <6> I almost wish I did <5> whatws the problem with it anyway <6> It either freezes or reboots during the installation of linux <5> no wonder it was cheap <5> run diags on it before installing an os <5> check that ram/cables are all ok <5> etc <6> It works with windows like a charm and diagnostics tell me that everything is 100% in working order <5> what distro you installing on it <6> First I went for Centos 4.3 <6> I tried Ubuntu secondly to no avail either <6> I tried almost every switch in the book, noprobe, noapic, acpi=off, text etc... <5> is it scsi, how much ram ? <5> old/new server ? raid ? new bios ? <6> It is a SCSI RAID5 config, 2 Gb ram <5> try installing fedora core release 5 on it
<6> Fairly old machine, Proliant 8000 <5> !google fedora mirrors <6> It seems though that mem=960M did improve the boot sequence with some lines <2> where does it stop...when and what is the output on screen <7> can u see a real big differnet in the linux 64bit? <7> distors <7> distros <8> yeah lots of stuff doesnt work.. <8> so its a REAL difference :)) <6> It stops right after initializing the com1 interface <7> damn <2> does the install run through ? <2> try fedora <6> The screen goes in powersave mode during install and ends with a warm reboot <2> thats the only thing apart from rhe i can help ya with <6> Centos 4.3 is in fact RHEL4.1 <2> i know <6> And my prefered OS of choice for this machine <2> what I havent seen I cant advise on <6> true ;) <2> so...fedora.. <2> you can extrapolate from that eperience <2> experience <6> I'll quickly pull down an ISO of FC <1> gentoo will run with scsi <1> gentoo's live cd i mean <1> [baz]: pull a live cd and see if it will boot <6> scsi is not a problem <1> i know my servers have always been scsi <6> I checked for the controller drivers. They are in the kernel since 2.2.x <6> Ubuntu live CD won't run either <1> you might have a conflict <7> what would yall say is the most noobish linux distro? <1> fedora <9> ubuntu <6> knoppix <9> knoppix is not a distro <9> it's a live cd <6> its a derative from debian <2> fedora aint noobish <9> I know what it is <9> it's still not a distro <9> it's a livecd <6> !define distro <1> omegaevil: sure it is... rpms are targeted at n00bs <2> haha <4> the giant flesh-eating demon squid has escaped! security! protect your master! GIR! Defensive mode! <10> ubuntu ftw <7> lol <2> i know so mnay people who struggle with rpms <2> because they dont understand them <7> rpms go way back with redhat I don't think redhat was real noobish <10> no because they are stupid <8> **distro <11> Bugger all, i dunno, znx <10> they make you find stuff yourself <8> pfft <10> apt-get does it for u <2> Jer if you are not an idiot you can write your own spec files <2> and make your own packages <2> hehe <7> apt-get doesn't have everything though <1> emerge #1 <12> what do you want anyweb? <2> id say gentoo's package manager is more for n00bs than rpms <2> due to its simplicity <12> bah, bbl <1> omegaevil: that is an interesting concept... plz explain your reasoning <2> emerge does it for ya <9> after five hours ya <1> ***uming you have your make set correctly, yes it does <2> rpms...are pre-compiled bianries to run and configured in a ceretain way for m*** roll out <1> rpms are designed to take the choice away from the user. you get the configuration the creator gives you <2> they allow easy verification and checking of files and allow a quick reinstating of core functionality
