<0> i'm looking for a CRT, 17 or 19" with as the sharpest possible image quality. (for easiest reading) i'm probably going to get the samsung 997MB. can anyone make any reccomendations. CNET seems to be the best place for information on CRT monitors, but they dont have much info, and their users contradict their reviews. <1> I don't like crts <1> go for an lcd <2> Anyone here done any experimenting with undervolting their processor to use a lower Vcore? <3> why? <3> running too hot? <2> Just trying to get my temperatures down as low as I can... I'm overclocking and undervolting to find the right balance for a conservative setup <4> my cpu almost went toast when one of the cables snagged the cpu fan :( <2> Number17 - interesting. I always ***umed the system would shut down if temps got too high or fan RPM went to zero. <3> i don't think undervolting will harm your proc <3> overvolting would, though <3> but... <3> undervolting = less stability <2> I've found I can undervolt my processor by .15 volts, while overclocking by .45 GHz. Keeps it nice and cool and runs stable with prime95 x 2 <2> (dual core) <3> best to use prime95 or memtest
<3> ok <3> if it's stable for more than like <3> let's say <3> 10 hours <3> you are probably good <3> god <3> .45 ghz? <3> 450 mhz? <2> Yes, it is... I'm partly doing this because I want this processor to have a long lifespan. <3> heh, what proc? <2> Lakevren - yes, it's the Opteron 165. Lots are overclocking it .9 GHz on air... It's a very good little chip for the money. Server cl***, so it has lots of headroom <3> im guessing by those numbers, an opty <3> yeah i was right. <2> This is the first time I've ever overclocked, and it was a breeze. RAM was the tricky part. <3> meh <3> i got a mobo with no pci/agp lock <3> and a 754 socket <3> with a 3200+ <3> poor me. <2> It's a nice little setup. I'm really pleased. Given that I can undervolt and still run it steady, I'm hoping in a year or two when I want to crank up the overclock I'll have lots of room to push teh speed up. <5> a year <5> or two? <5> LOL <2> I have to stretch out my hardware :) I keep it for a while. That's why I went with the opteron. It's already overclocked to match most high-end processors, and I think I'll squeeze quite a bit more out of it down the road. <2> I wish I could find reasonable temps for this opteron though. I'm not sure what good cpu/mobo temps are for dual-core opterons <4> Sounds like you need a time machine. <2> time machine? <4> Yes to make your hardware last forever. <2> I aim for around four years. My XP 1700+ was great for 4 years. <4> I used my original p133 for like 3 years. it was horrible. <3> i used my p133 for 5 years <3> torturing pain <4> very! <3> then got a pIII 500 woo <4> p133 is like the very very very bare minimum to watch divx and junk. <3> of course that didn't last 2 years <3> and then i got a crappy 1.8ghz p4 <3> lasted 2 years <3> and now this <3> it's almost 2 years <4> i got a crappy 1.3 p4, its still going, as a download machine, now im at a 2.8ghz <3> i plan to replace it in a year. <4> ive had this for almost 2 years now as well. <3> im at 3200+ 754 socket <4> conroe for life. <3> but my video card is awesome <3> but the cpu is *** <4> bleh ive got burnt my nvidia. <4> never again. <3> i wanna get the mobile 4000+ newark for 754 <3> but i need to update my bios <4> everything is becomming point and click, update your bios in windows these days. <3> yeah well <3> i can't do recovery <3> hmm <3> is there a way to backup bios? <3> oh **** that <4> Yeah well atleast i can do it. <3> i should really get this <3> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819104257 <3> it's almost an FX-55 without multiplier unlock
<6> hmm all-in-all would it be worth it to make my own computeR? <4> building your own computer is only a h***le when one or more of the parts is broken <4> other then that, it just takes 15-45 minutes to ***emble when you have all the parts and another whatever amount of time to install everything. <3> yeah <7> building death rays.... <7> that's hard <6> its just i dont know what i'd use it for. ive got two computers and one laptop. two comps are networked together on a DIALUP connection, windows xp and netbsd 3.0. i installed net for my dad to use at the same time as me. the laptop i wanted to use for wardriving but havent gotten around to it, it needs a new battery to. what would i need another computer for? <4> I don't know. <6> what do most people do with networks? all the ppl i know are freaking dumb***es, and thus i have no friends :\ <8> lol <6> no really <6> they really are dumb***es. <6> hmm <8> nah <8> they are not dumb***es <6> would it be legal to build my own computers and sell them? <6> lol yes they _are_ <8> they are just what we called "lesser talanted" <6> ah <6> could i like legally make money off of ***embled boxen? <4> triavox: you can do that, but be prepared to be technical support <4> sure. <6> im used to it <6> AWESOME. would i be making a profit? <8> no... <7> "***embled boxen"? <4> well thats up to you. <8> friends discount = 100% <4> and who you sell it to. <6> :P <6> yay ^_^ <6> can someone teach me everything there is to know about electronic hardware in less than a year? <7> I can teach you all you need to know for a small fee <7> I have lots of text books <8> yes <8> me too <8> my brian <8> brain <8> is my textbook <6> erm <6> whats the fee, money? <8> *** obviously <7> I have one of them too but its better than |ReDyEy's <8> ^_^ <6> :\ <7> for the year <4> I wouldn't bother to sell computer systems, so many do it already the margins are pretty thin, the only people you could make money off of are idiots who don't know anything about computers and they are the ones who will cuase you the most trouble with tech support. <7> hell I'll get yuo certified <6> Number17 <6> you just named MY ENTIRE SCHOOL <6> yes!! <6> i can sell them for HALF as much as the manufacturers <7> I agree alot with what Number17 is saying <6> how much would it cost to build a relatively decent system <7> but you can repair for $$$$ <4> you know what i tell people like that, just get a dell. <6> seriously, im used to tech suport and people would _die_ to buy computers from me at school <4> Don't h***le me. <6> :P <4> dell tech support is teh best, just re-image all the time. <6> no my tech support is the best. im a certified BOFH <4> i usually fix computers for a small fee. <6> tried it, didnt work. noone has a computer where i live :\ and my school is in another city <4> but what i charge and what a shop charges are huge differences. <6> brb <6> :P how much you charge <4> i fixed a laptop recently, HP's would have charged him 400$ just for the parts. I did it for 125$ including labor. <6> :\ i charge 20$ for any hardware or software problem <4> Don't bother fixing anything for less then 15$ an hour unless they are your friends. <6> noone called :`( <4> Do some work for free build up a clientel base. <6> i tried man, noone wants to travel the distance from there city to mine. i do most of my work at school <6> their* <4> oh well.
