<0> bah - i have to recompile the whole thing again ?
<1> FoxHunter: we'll need more info than that... the real error is up above that
<2> make[2]: *** [/var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.4-r3/work/build-x86-x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-nptl/elf/librtld.map] Error 1
<2> make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/glibc-2.4-r3/work/glibc-2.4/elf'
<1> tims: if its a 2.6 kernel it should take less than a minute for the second build
<2> librtld.map
<1> FoxHunter: that wasnt the error either... we need more, and please paste on pasteme.com
<2> ok
<0> iamben: it is, do i still do a normal make menuconfig, make && make modules_install ?
<2> where is the error then? that is the only one I see.
<1> tims: yep
<0> will it overwrite my old kernel? (which is what i want?)
<1> tims: you will have to copy the kernel over to /boot like you did the first time
<2> iamben; I don't have login access to pasteme.com
<1> doing a make just puts it in /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot
<0> ah ok

<2> it's going to the admin zone
<3> hi peeps
<1> FoxHunter: umm pasteme.com? just put whatever user you want
<2> oh, without the www.
<4> FoxHunter Pasted http://pasteme.com/p.php?id=83
<3> a question: on my box, when I try to change a file's group to "apache", it automatically and miraculously changes it to "rpm" (this being a Mandrkae box). How the hell did they make it do that>??
<2> iamben; ok, I pasted it. Take a look and tell me if that is what you were looking for.
<2> paste #83
<1> those glibc-omitfp and hardened use flags could hae something to do with it
<2> glibc compiled before until I added the +glibc-omitfp flag
<2> so I know it's that.
<1> well you could have told us that
<2> I was just trying to optimize glibc better is all.
<2> eheh sorry
<1> i would try to build glibc-2.4 without it first, then with your system running 2.4, try to tweak
<1> but tbh, i dont even know what that flag does
<2> ok
<2> when using -fomit-frame-pointer in make.conf
<2> you would usually compile glibc with omitfp
<2> the flag maximises the optimisations in glibc and provides two sets of libraries, the first 'optimised' the second 'standard'. Its behaviour is to use the optimised libraries by default, but is able to drop back to 'standard' libraries if it has to.
<2> I don't know the technical details.
<2> what package I need to install to get netinet/protocols.h and ip_udp.h?
<2> I think uclibc
<1> you're using uclibc too?
<2> no
<2> I was trying to
<2> I know they don't go together
<0> wow - that worked like a charm : )
<2> when I do a "cp -i" how do I automatically say "no" to all
<2> I would like to copy over all files but not overwrite any existing files.
<5> it ****s having a "yes" utility, but no "no" utility, doesn't it ? :>
<0> never got that either
<5> you can try this though: while [ 1 ]; do echo no; done | cp -i ...
<0> man, i got too used to apt-get's. gentoo's emerge is weird : )
<1> FoxHunter: sounds like you need rsync
<6> is 60 degrees celsius normal operating temperature for a Socket A amd athlon thunderbird 1.0ghz :(
<7> its pushing it
<6> I just put some new arctic silver 5 on it what the hell >:(
<6> new fan, too
<6> heatsink is from some coolermaster thing, made out of some kind of aluminum (it's silver colored)
<6> would pencilling in the L1 bridges have anything to do with it? :(
<6> (stock speed btw)
<8> howdy folks
<9> Anyone got a wacom device ?
<8> i've used one
<8> and i want one
<8> :P
<8> that count?
<9> hehe, I got a wacom tablet and i need some config adive :)
<9> so i dont think it counts :)
<8> curses
<6> I used to have one
<9> RageDemon: When i move the pen around i selects everything. I want only to select when i push the pen button. You know how to this ?
<9> or select when i pressure it hard against the tablet..
<9> to use it as a mouse now i have to hover the pen, over the tablet..
<9> I select on the slightest pressure..
<6> intercool: never used it with linux though 8)
<9> hehe okay..
<8> intercool: thats how they are
<8> when you touch its a left-click
<6> you can hover your pen over the tablet and it'll still work, without clicking

<8> yeah, as long as you dont touch
<8> then its a left click
<9> Obsidian: then i have to change that, or make it left-click when the pressure gets highter..
<6> takes some finesse though
<8> you'd have to have a driver for X that recognizes the tablet, not something that p***es the tablet to the mouse interface
<8> and a driver thats configurable as to the sensitivity
<9> grrr. It was pure hell to get the kernel driver to work. Lets hope its easier with the xorg driver then :)
<8> good luck to ya sir
<9> :)
<10> Why does gcc list x11 as a dependancy? Why does my compiler say it needs X? This is very annoying, because I'm trying to REMOVE X from my system (I originally did not have it, installed it, played with it for a few months, now removing it), and gcc keeps trying to bring X back.
<11> im sure its something else other then gcc
<11> and you might want to learn how to use USE flags
<10> Right. Well, 'equery depend Hmm.
<10> equery depends says:
<10> [ Searching for packages depending on virtual/x11... ]
<10> www-client/links-2.1_pre20
<10> sys-devel/gcc-3.4.6-r1
<10> So I don't think it's quite in my head. In addition, the use flags for gcc are:
<11> emerge -pvuD world check your use flags
<10> nls -bootstrap -boundschecking -build -doc -fortran -gcj -gtk -hardened -ip28 -ip32r10k -multislot -nocxx -nopie -nossp -objc -vanilla
<11> even a simple thing as jpeg might cause X to be installed
<10> The first thing I did when taking X off was change the use flags, and do a global emerge -auvD --newuse.
<11> N = --newuse
<10> Eh. For the ones I don't use all the time, I just use the long version.
<10> Easier to remember, less likely to screw up.
<11> what are your use flags on links?
<10> What's that have to do with gcc? I already unmerged links, I didn't need it.
<10> Right now, I'm trying to figure out why gcc thinks it needs virtual/x11... it's really annoying.
<11> ok your saying that gcc wants X installed right? ... ok then theres something else that needs X based on use flags .. and useing -N might be the issue
<11> the only time i would use -N is when you change a flag that was set from the start
<10> Actually, what I'm saying is that equery depends x11 tells me that gcc depends on it.
<10> ... MrEcho, I don't think you understood what I said earlier. After taking X off my system, I changed the use flags to get rid of X, among other related flags. So, after that, I did a recompile with -N. That was a few weeks ago, and has little to do with my problem today. I was only talking about --newuse to provide historical context to the issue.
<11> virtual/x11 is just that virtual ... so its trying to install xorg-x11 ?
<10> Correct, among a host of other junk as well. But the root of the problem boils down to gcc says it needs virtual/x11... and that ****s in a ton of other dependancies.
<7> generally i add a -pv to the merge, crawl up the use verbose and see what use flag is causing the chain
<11> yep
<7> to be a vertual/x11 sounds like libjpeg, libtiff, possible framebuffer (fb), things along that line
<10> I always use --verbose... but I don't see a use flag on there that would require X.
<10> fb doesn't require X. I used fb without X installed, prior to playing with X.
<11> paste us your emerge -pvuDN world to genpaste.pengu.in
<10> Aye aye, mon kapitan.
<12> MrEcho: whats the -N?
<11> --newuse
<11> see thats one thing about gentoo ... its very hard to remove packages that have alot of deps of deps
<13> Yvon pasted "gcc ****ing in crud dependancies", view at http://genpaste.pengu.in/pastes/show/226
<11> heh
<11> -xv -gif
<11> and you didnt do all the flags
<10> What's -xv?
<11> -pvuDN not -auvD
<7> dah
<7> arts
<7> -arts
<10> a = p, or close enough, and I haven't changed use flags since I last did a --newuse
<11> try adding thouse 3 - 's
<10> Am now...
<7> you just need to set -arts in make.conf and youre find
<7> *fine
<10> That did it. For testing, I only put 'USE="-arts -xv -gif" emerge...'. But one of those was the culprit, and it no longer ****s in a ton of crud.
<7> english?
<11> also doing a -t helps at times tree
<11> ive solved some dep issues with that
<14> rage
<15> jowazxge
<16> cemo
<17> he gives a bad name to... people.
<18> hiris
<19> yohiuu
<9> Whats the best app for managing my wlan connection in gnome ?
<20> why is X11 a dependancy for links ?
<7> traceback -pv and find out
<21> hi, some weird happen with gaim using gnutls
<21> checking for GNUTLS includes... ""
<21> checking gnutls/gnutls.h usability... yes
