<0> I think its right. ls /usr/src ; linux linux-2.6.17-r4
<0> I think its right. ls /usr/src ; linux linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r4
<1> ls /lib/modules/linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r4 ?
<1> the "build" symlink shows to the kernel?
<2> crap, I dont think I have USE hald, HAL or avahi in my USE settings, can I add those after the isntall of Gnome?
<2> I got ahead of myself and forgot to edit it
<3> emerge -ND world
<1> PockDrone, you can add but that wont have effect until you rebuild
<4> if u add it before you still have to recompile :P
<0> renihs|wr: I dont have any /ust/modules/linux.. file
<1> you dont have a /lib/modules/linux-2.6.17-gentoo-r4 ?
<3> cd /usr/src/linux ; make ; make modules_install
<0> renihs|wr: no
<1> than like Mrecho said
<3> helps to read the handbook/docs when building the kernel
<0> ok

<0> I havent build it
<3> wtf....
<1> who build it then?
<1> :)
<0> It "got" built by the gtk installl gentoo live cd. (I had to test it)
<3> unless your still on the live cd .. you had to
<3> umm dude, it doesnt work that way
<1> i always said and i always will say, the graphical installer is a waste of time/ressources and nonsenese
<1> :)
<0> I will build me a new kernel when the nvidia card works
<1> nope
<1> first you need kernel
<1> than you can build nvidia module
<3> you have to be running that kernel to use that nvidia module
<0> Why doessent the nvidia guide tells that "you need to install a new kernel for it to work"? I use the gentoo kernel..
<3> because its common since to be running under a kernel that you built, and not on a live cd
<5> GENTOO! GENTOO! GENTOO!
<5> etc...
<6> dork
<0> Gentoo-kernel sux then, Torvald-kernel-POWA!
<5> Gonna install it now.
<7> WINDOWS FOREVER
<8> maybe you should read the docs
<8> maybe that would help
<7> lol
<0> lude: I cant read all the handbook at once.
<9> if i have the individual files from an unencrypted dvd (the VIDEO_TS directory) as a tar, am i right in thinking that it is functionally quivalent to having a .iso of the dvd?
<9> *equivalent
<1> matja, i would guess so?
<6> yeah
<9> ie, the tar can be used to make an iso
<1> should
<1> sure
<10> wasaaa
<9> thats what i thought
<1> untar it, mkisofs should do the trick i guess :)
<9> i wasnt sure if video dvd's have secret/hidden things which you dont see in the filesystem
<9> like ntfs streams and hfs properties etc
<1> not that i know about
<11> damnit
<11> dvd 4 5 6 from lost season 2 aren't on newsgrous
<4> thats like autodesk inventor 11 not being up :(
<12> You know what's fun?
<12> taking pop bottles, shaking them a bit, undoing the cap just a bit, then take your thumb and do the rest
<12> *not responsible if it puts a hole in your cealing*
<12> Ceiling, even
<13> speaking of hfs, is there anything I can use to read hfs drives other than just mounting and looking at the fake DB / DF / System files
<2> when I compiled X.org I dont think Freeglut installed correctly, is there anyway to install it without having to redo x.org completely?
<14> Anyone have a Hauppauge running under gentoo, with mythtv?
<14> tv card. :P
<2> any ideas..
<2> x.org took so long to compile
<10> whot?
<15> xorg-x11 shouldn't take that long
<15> xorg-server is the long one.
<15> PockDrone, try to emerge it?
<15> freeglut that is
<15> i'm not even sure what it does, but that's what i would try.
<16> OK, why does my fonts like crap in kde with gentoo i686,but they looks fine when I use the default ugly X window manager... when I install gentoo with x86_64, its always fine, but not with i686.. so which use flag is enable/disable with i686 that it isnt with x86_64 that make looks my font ugly in kde... (ex: arts is disable by default with x86_64, not in i686)
<4> gentoo old school days was tight
<16> looks like theres no anti-aliasing, but I do have this option enable in the control center

<16> if I use firefox from default X window manager, its ok, but not with kde
<15> FatMom, my GUESS is that it's something to do with kde
<16> thats for sure
<15> are you getting any errors?
<16> no
<16> only fonts looking like ***
<16> like no anti-aliasing
<16> but I DO have the anti-alising option enable
<15> no errors in /var/log?
<15> yeah, i'm guessing your font path is screwed up, or something
<15> maybe you don't have all the fonts installed
<16> but
<15> so /var/log/Xorg.log shows nothing?
<16> why I dosent happen when using x86_64 :(
<16> oh the log
<2> after doing emerge
<2> should I do env-update?
<15> yes
<2> in general
<2> thanks
<2> what if Im doing multi stuff?
<2> like emerge freeglut
<2> emerge gnome
<2> will one env update do?
<15> i don't know.
<2> so do I have to do it inbetween each emerge?
<2> oh
<15> it's a good practice to always env-update though
<15> btw, you can emerge freeglut gnome
<15> and it will install both
<15> emerge package1 package2 package3, and so on.
<15> ..
<2> k
<2> I emerged gnome but it needed that freeglut, now that its emerged, I just do emerge again for gnome right?
<16> katepls: no error in the log
<16> dosent emerge auto env-update after each merged thing ?
<17> afaik yes
<17> but youd still need to source /etc/profile
<2> Hey ShALLaX :)
<17> heya
<17> just heading out to work
<17> bbl
<18> see ya
<16> how can I take a screenshot with the default X window manager ?
<3> you mean twm
<16> to show you what I mean by fonts looking bad
<3> import <save to filename>
<19> my fonts look awesome
<16> mine does not, in kde
<16> but does in kde with x86_64 -_-
<15> The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on
<19> hehe
<19> to bad there is no preap
<15> preap?
<19> s/to/too/g
<19> on unix, to rip memory maps/defunct stuff
<15> oh
<20> whats up everyone
<19> preap - force a defunct process to be reaped by its parent
<19> ::))))
<19> cute description
<19> i am really missing that on linux
<19> sometimes
<15> sounds like a Lifetime special
<20> i think i may have a dead hardrive... is there anyway i can diagnose it to be sure?
<15> corax, spinrite
<20> it wont mount .... and yesterday it did
<19> corax, drop it into fire
<15> you could also try to run your disk maker's diagnostic tool
<19> spinrite ey?
<19> didnt know that
<20> anything other than fire
<19> not in portage
