<0> still no love
<1> i'm seeking trasher anyone saw it?
<0> put appropriate items in make.conf and modules.conf
<1> i'm seeking trasher anyone saw him ? sorry
<2> i love playing dvds on linux, the sound is so much better then windows
<3> gah
<3> thats annoying
<3> radeonfb port 1 not found
<3> radeonfb port 2 not found
<3> etc
<3> and than video drops off the face of the heart
<3> earth*
<0> anyone help with emu10k1 for in-kernel alsa-driver as module?
<0> can't find it, and it's built
<0> do i need to tell it where to find it better, and where would i do that?
<4> therien: when you built the kernel, did you do a "make modules_install" ?

<5> therien: modprobe -v snd_emu10k1
<5> i guess
<0> hmmm
<0> well this ****s.
<0> haha :)
<0> anyone familiar with soundblaster cards with alsa?
<0> and gentoo
<5> therien, if it doesnt load the module you have not build or not installed the modules
<5> .
<6> ok so I have md0 and md1 with ext2 fs I need ext3 anyway I can easily do this?
<5> mikefoo, tune2fs -j /dev/md0
<5> i guess
<4> might want to add tune2fs -O dir_index (for hashed b-trees)
<6> ahh, why? CannedBar
<7> Has anyone played with a conroe E6600 with gentoo yet? =)
<7> I'm just reinstalling my system :)
<4> mikefoo: that speeds up operations in directories with a large number of files
<4> hashed b-tree directory structures are part of what gives reiserfs its speed
<5> CannedBar, as if reiser was so fast :)
<5> why does everyone think that?
<8> Did anyone ever experienced weird problem on Opteron based boxes? We have 4 x Opteron 854, 8 x 10.000 rpms SCSI HDDs, 16 GB RAM in each machine. Running Gentoo 64 bits on those. Each box was running real fast with just 4 gigs of ram, but then when we added 4 more it started to work slower, and with 16 gigs it works REAL slow...
<8> I cannot explain this, anyone have a clue?
<5> Mik: thats PAE
<8> what's PAE?
<5> a memory hack to adress more memory
<5> :)
<5> it slows down around 20%
<8> yeah, exactly. How do I fix that?
<5> become kernel developer?
<8> oh crap...I knew you'd say that :)
<5> use solaris/aix?
<5> :)
<5> dunno
<8> My kernel development times are way back in 1993, I'm out of there :)
<5> linux isnt fit for large memory yet
<8> 16 ... is it considered large?
<5> no
<9> Yeah
<9> Huh
<5> but yes
<8> it says it supports in kernel up to 64
<5> i find 64gb ok
<5> everything below 48 gb is small
<9> wth needs 64GB?
<5> Codgen, mid entry server stuff
<8> clustered system with 20 boxes like that needs that, believe me :)
<9> I guess
<8> renihs is right
<8> mid entry servers
<5> if you want to charm the customer
<5> :)
<9> I decided to **** around with Win server OSes on my C466. Figure this one out.
<4> renihs: I don't think it's OMFG uber fast, but it is considerable faster than a plain ext2 part when listing a directory with 5000 files/folders w/in it
<9> Win2000 Server runs laggier than Win2003 Server
<5> CannedBar, reisers gets slow over time
<5> easy to reproduce
<5> squid filesystem
<8> renihs: Guys had 8 boxes with dual CPUs before, it was running smooth. So project went further, and they have added some muscle into it....They thought. But..results saying something else
<8> they use xfs
<5> ext3 is faster, stable, and doesnt get slower
<8> xfs is even faster

<5> xfs is nice if you have no power failures
<5> :)
<4> renihs: yeah, that's why I use ext3 :-P
<8> tripple power supplies there
<10> i've had my first xfs problem ever yesterday :(
<8> dual electrical cirtuicts
<10> sux
<8> circuits
<9> d
<9> ****
<11> User: Salec Pasted http://pasteme.com/p.php?id=256
<5> ya, i like xfs too, best for large databases and doubles disklifetime
<5> but i dont use it :)
<4> and regarding mik's issue, I thought that 64 bit eliminated the need for PAE...
<8> renigs: Are you saying that there's nothing I can do about that memory thingie?
<5> CannedBar, hmm 64 bit hmm
<5> i forgot that
<5> hmmm
<8> yeah, running 64 bits
<5> dunno, that should be looked up
<8> nah...not that good :)
<4> s/when/why/
<8> not dual core even
<5> ofc not
<5> 8 cpus? or
<8> customer's choice, what can I say
<8> no, 4 CPUs
<5> ah, 4 ..
<4> then opteron 8xx series is a waste
<5> hmm are there 4 dualcores yet?
<5> lol
<5> no
<5> its amds bastion
<5> intel has nothing there
<5> in 64bit
<5> they are nice
<8> CannedBar : Agree on that one, but that wasn't available when they bought 854
<8> dualcores came later on
<12> if your choice is between 2xx and 8xx for a 4 way machine, i wouldn't call 8xx a waste
<4> renihs: no, I'm saying that the 4xx series would work just as well, and enough money left over to have a ***y party.
<8> so, if I understood correctly, PAE thing is not relevant on 64 bits systems?
<5> dunno
<4> Mik-: correct
<8> So, back to our problem...any other clues?
<4> have you checked the AMD processor errata?
<5> what was the problem again?
<5> ah yes
<4> I had their 4-bank 1T DDR-400 timing issue bite me in the *** previously.
<8> renihs: When system runs on 4 CPUs with 4 gb ram, it runs pretty fast. When we compare to 16 gigs of ram, we should have gain at least double more benchmarking, and it actually appears to work slower(!) than with 4 gigs
<8> well, that's DDR-400 we have inthere
<8> 4 banks
<8> what kind of issue?
<2> the cats are coming
<2> to attack us
<8> cows too?>)
<2> no
<5> did you ever adjust the kernel timer? it affects alot stuff somehow :) (even traffic shaping algorythms)
<8> renihs: We tried to play with it, I think they chose the right one at the end
<5> 1000
<5> :)
<5> dunno, i would play around with kernel, starting minimal
<4> Mik-: it was an issue with Rev D and earlier AMD64 processors, Rev E and later don't have it
<5> my box only has 8gb and its seems *very* fast
<5> but i dont really use any ram
<5> except as disk (4gb)
<5> it compiled 2538 packages in no time
<9> bnla
<9> blah*
<9> d
<5> :)P
<5> lemme check how long that took
<8> CannedBar : Where can I see what Rev I have?
