<0> hm..
<1> Kinsey: you could just install X server on you...server, and then install whatever bit torrent client you want
<1> and just forward the X app to your existing linux box running X>
<2> duhbLow7: nah, it's just restoring 11 windows and 75+ tabs from my last session...
<1> if you want a really light WM i would go with one of the *boxes, either fluxbox, openbox, blackbox. Fluxbox would be my first choice.
<1> CannedBar: yeah that Extension is kind of heavy :X
<2> bitrot: there are multiple extensions you can use...
<3> twm !
<1> CannedBar: and they all ****.
<2> also, if you want a really light WM, evilWM, or ratpoison.
<3> xfce
<1> what would make EvilWM or ratposion LIGHTER than fluxbox?
<1> I believe when you get into those two and fluxbox it's just a matter of personal choice.
<2> fluxbox maybe better for most... but I highly doubt it is truely lighter.
<0> ill do some thinking on that... ok, on the subject, whats a good x-server for windows for remoting the server?
<1> I personally use screen on all my servers.

<1> Gui is over rated.
<1> Kinsey: Xorg.
<0> does xorg supply a x-server for MS Windows for remoting? hm..
<2> Kinsey: if you want one of most compatable options, xvnc
<1> lol
<2> but there are X-servers for Windows
<1> I would just forward the X apps but that's just me.
<2> CygwinX, XMing, etc...
<1> using cygwin
<0> bitrot:forwarding is what I am talking about..
<4> isn't there CoLinux too
<1> Didn't even know this was Windows heh.
<3> putty works for x forwarding
<0> for that you will need an x-server running on the windows box
<2> RageDemon: CoLinux has not framebuffer support, only proof of concept.
<5> I er, don't suppose anyone can help getting my DVD to read past 4GB?
<4> oic
<0> putty is only for tunneling the x-protocol
<1> no
<1> it has X forwarding too
<2> Two9A: flip it over?
<4> how's cygwin
<5> So ****ing funny.
<1> I haven't used it in a long time.
<5> I've got a backup on there that I need access to
<1> CYGwin that is, last time I did use it I liked it.
<2> cygwin is great, I'd have to shoot windows without it.
<6> CannedBar, i have problems with that extension as well on one of my desktops
<2> I used to use sessionsaver, but SessionManager appears to be a little lighter
<1> any extension that saves your sessions in your browser is going to give you problems heh.
<2> and speaking of CoLinux, I'm creating an install from 2006.0 right now...
<0> is xvnc in portage?
<1> vnc is
<2> Kinsey: probably as vnc
<0> OK
<1> [ebuild N ] net-misc/vnc-4.0-r1 USE="-server" 471 kB
<2> Xvnc is the X Server provided by vnc
<3> x11-misc/x11vnc is really nice
<1> build it with the server USE flag, that way you can have it use vnc.so when it loads X
<1> x11vnc is what I use and I like it
<1> since VNC wouldn't be loaded by root like X is using the vnc.so module.
<0> nice...
<0> ill try x11vnc
<1> Kinsey: check out gentoo-wiki.com for some good HowTos.
<2> I used to like x11vnc, but no point on a headless box
<2> might as well go wtih tightVNC
<1> x11vnc is tight vnc
<1> what are you talking about?
<1> it uses TIGHT encoding as well.
<7> toit
<2> bitrot: but it works on a X server working on a REAL display
<7> toit as a tiger
<1> CannedBar: and so would vnc.so with vnc....
<1> it's going to use display :0
<1> but if you just forward the X11 apps over no VNC is even required.
<2> yeah, I just don't see the point of the extra effort. I'll just install vnc, and copy my vnc script to ~user/bin/
<1> vnc script?
<1> there is no extra effort
<1> there is like 10 different ways to setup vnc on X
<1> it's just whichever option you really like.
<0> bitrot:thats what I would like, I did it once, a long time ago... but then Ill need a x-server for ms..

<1> i know that my x11vnc server doesn't require some predefinied script just a config file.
<1> Kinsey: yeah there is tons
<1> cygwin is one we mentioned
<1> colinux is another one
<1> also eXceed is another one I believe.
<1> Not sure if they even have that one around anymore.
<1> but Cygwin should work just as well
<1> i would imagine you just want to setup to have your torrent client be used on your windows box that is actually running on your server right?
<2> bitrot: no, but I got lazy a while back and wrote a quick script, it gets tossed on each box along with the rest of my environment.
<1> CannedBar: lol that makes no sense.
<1> at least to me.
<1> being lazy and writing a script just don't go together heh.
<2> bitrot: it does when you deploy it to many boxes :-P
<1> okay
<1> and you could do the same with the configuration file require for x11vnc....
<2> meh whatever, you have something that works, I have something that works...
<1> yeah but mine is much easier.
<1> considering there is no scripts that a user has to create to get the remote enviornment working.
<2> not if you want multiple Xservers for different users
<1> mmhmmm
<1> you should check out the gentoo-wiki yourself it seems :)
<1> there is a 'terminal' services setup that is very nice.
<0> got x11vnc working :)
<1> good for you
<1> it's really easy to get working hehe
<0> hehe, im at a remote location, so Ive still not seen x 'live'..
<2> bitrot: yeah, as I said, I have something that I like, you have something that you like. I also don't have the convience of working on gentoo everywhere. I'm dropping the conversation as it is pointless.
<1> yeah as long as X is running I think you can just startup x11vnc and it should allow you to connect.
<0> ill experiment a bit..
<1> CannedBar: Right it's not gentoo related but whatever you say hoss.
<1> using x11vnc has NOTHING to do with Gentoo.
<1> and there is rpms for it I believe etc.
<2> yeah... all I was saying is that some distros tweak their packages/defaults, that can potentially mess up configs
<1> CannedBar: Was just trying to save you some grief, sometimes you may be doing somethign that is outdated or someone may have considered a more efficent way of doing something that's all I'm saying, just because your way works doesn't mean it's the most efficent, but as long as you like it good for you, shame that you can't at least consider different options.
<0> ok, how can I emerge gnome without stuff like gnome-games and all that?
<2> I had already played around with x11vnc, I love the methods it uses to detect changes, etc, but I decided to stick with vnc
<0> hm.. gnome-light...
<3> kdebase-meta is a light install of kde
<0> not to start a flame-war, but which is considered to be the best? kde or gnome?
<0> :)
<0> been a while since Ive used x on linux...
<8> they are both good, neither is better in all ways
<9> they're both ****
<0> hehe
<0> spb: and your choice is?
<9> each is less **** than the other in various ways
<9> Kinsey: xfce4, fluxbox, console
<8> we dont want your skank *** fluxbox/blackbox/evilwm
<10> ouch
<9> right now, console
<10> anyone know a music manager like itunes or amarok but uses gtk
<8> motion: rhythmbox, but its not nearly as good as amarok
<10> kk
<10> iamben; do you know if amarok will take a dir of mp3's and move them somewhere with pretty filenames
<10> based off of id3
<2> Kinsey: Gnome tends to simplify things, OS X style. It will give you less configurability, but things can be easier overall. KDE is more like Windows in that it is highly configurable but not quite as intuitive.
<0> ill actually try xfce4 as ive used gnome and kde before..
<11> so who won this soccer cup thing?
<8> dont know, i use easytag for my id3 & naming
<10> kk
<1> I would say it's the other way around...
<0> italy
<10> ouch actually thats not gonna work either
<9> ooh shiny
<1> KDE is more like OS X since there is so many people out there that try to make KDE look like OS X...
<10> im sure none in linux will support the m4p's i have
<11> and the headbutt guy is from france?
<2> motion: nope, m4p's are itunes only
<0> yes, originally from algeria
<1> quannum: yeah
<9> kde is annoying to use but has a relatively clean codebase
<10> cannedbar; vlc use to support them
<11> kk
<1> quannum: only a frenchman would do something that low.
