<1> scott: you have to setup your texture units before glbegin/end. You can only set the texture coords for each unit..
<1> Usually with terrain people use 1 big texture per terrain "Section" .. So, if you need a lot of different textures or 1 texture is too large for a given terrain (stretches too much, you need to break up your terrain into multiple sections..

<1> In my engine, I group all geometry with the same textures (and multi-textures).. Then, I setup the textures for that group of geometry, render the geometry using a vertex array (glDrawArrays) ..
