<0> hey <1> I haved an open ssl problem; X tells me that libcrypto.so.5 is missing, I cant update it with yum and the rpm i downloaded from rpm find give me conflict errors. <2> try rpm -Uvh rpm-you-downloaded <2> incase anyone is intrested, i am building an RPM repo for enlightenment(E17) FC5 x86_64 <1> same confilcts returned <2> why cant you update with yum? <1> give me the command, and ill try it right now... <2> yum search openssl <1> yumex tells me that openssl is there; when i try and login, Xsessions error file tells me that /usr/bin/ssh-agent: error while loading shared libraries, lib crypto.so.5 cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory <3> dubkat: how do I use yum after I install your repo yum install "what" <2> ill let you know when i get that far :) <2> im still building packages <3> ok.. thanks <4> llandru: this is what happens when you install non fedora rpms or source code from other locations
<1> but, i did not do that. <4> the proper way to handle ALL software on fedora is either through the various yum options or rpm <1> the ssh that i was using came with fc4, so this does not apply here. <4> i'm not saying you installed some other ssh <4> but something that overwrote or removed libcrypto <4> try using yum to completely remove all openssh stuf <4> then reinstall it <1> doing it right now <1> ok. after 13 hours, i can start a kde sesion. gnome is still not behaving well. thanks to opsec for the long haul patience and the help... <4> this is a fresh install you're having all this trouble with? <1> nope, i tried to upgrade my fc4 to fc5 with the fc5 dvd <4> hmm .. that's not really recommended .. <4> it has been done successfully .. but the official stance of the fedora community is fresh installs <1> i know this now of course; why on earth they put it in the installer as an option is beyond me; they must know it doesnt work in general... <5> is there anyway to force a certai resolution? <4> it really depends on how much your tweaked your fc4 install <4> you must understand what fedora is <4> it is a testbed of new technologies <4> not everything is expected to work <4> it's a FOSS collection of the latest stuff <1> i have been using red hat since pic***o, and had no reason to switch basically... <1> so what distro should i be using as a pure replacement to windoze with all the latest stuff like compiz? <4> fedora is great .. don't get me wrong <4> but you have to be prepared .. <4> and that is true for really any distro <5> is there anyway to force a certain resolution? <4> why would you have to force it? <5> well its not available as a resolution <4> then it's not possible with your driver/hw combo <5> I have it at 1680x 1024 now and it needs to be 1680x1050 <1> so there is not alot of point switching; this is what i thought. i installed ubuntu on a spare drive to test it, and i cant see what the fuss is about. it doesnt work any better out of the box, (mp3s and multimedia patent encumbered stuff) so i chose to stick to fedora. but really, the upgrade option should not be there, because it does not work perfectly and more home users are getting into linux we need that osx like fault free ope <5> so its a linux thing, thanks <4> it's not a "linux thing" <4> i never said that <4> you did <5> no I did <5> it works fine for windows , why wouldnt it in linux ? <4> i've never even heard of those resolutions <5> Thus its a linux thing, no worries, as I am just learning linux but stlll fuzzy fonts **** :-) <4> like i said .. probably the wrong driver <5> widescreen 21 inch flatpanel <5> I haven't installed any drivers <4> ok .. you "win" it's a "linux thing" <5> well what do you expect when a n00b comes in asking if you can force a resolution <5> a genius or something <5> so is there there a rpm of Nvidia's latest drivers? <1> check nvidia.com <4> "genius" isn't about knowing a ton of crap .. it's about how you go about learning what you do know <4> no.. do not check nvidia.com <4> that will only ruin system files <4> livna has nvidia kmods
<4> rpm.livna.org <4> read about ati and nvidia there <4> enable the repo and yum install their kmod and nvidia driver <4> also .. if you want official fedora support .. the official channel is on irc.freenode.net <4> it's boiling with activity 24/7 <1> no one is listening in there. <4> it all depends on how you ask your questions on irc <4> if you show you are helping yourself (or at least trying) people will help you <4> if you randomly spit out things or demand ... you will be ignored <4> my point is .. if you aren't getting help .. switch up your tactics <1> thats entirely reasonable <4> indeed <1> ive been on irc since 96, and its normally the best place to come for help <4> yep .. when i post the "smart questions" faq people usually take it as an insult <4> but in reality .. it's a real help to those who need it <4> damn egos always in our ways <1> people who are desperate need more than that. help is about more than conveying knowledge. thats why people like that guy asking about resolution (and they always react the same way) did what he did. <4> desperation breeds ignorance <4> and slows down the tempo of any channel <1> the whole linux help system and install methodology needs to be completely re-vamped. My gnome install is now broken. I go to gnome.org and there is nothing there about how to install it, repair it...just a link to fedora, whose installer doesnt do what it is meant to do. I know that eventually I will fix it, but to the n00b, its intolerable and frustrating... <4> linux isn't for the average person who has no patience <4> it's for people who want to know their system <4> who want to understand and love computers and learning about them <1> not yet... some business man is going to sort it out. he will be despised by the old guard, but what he will do is free everyone from windoze, which is somehting no distro can do yet, for whatever reason <4> the reason gnome.org references fedora is because that is where you should be going for help <4> no one else frees you <4> you free yourself <4> that someone will come free you .. is a fallacy <4> and quite lazy <4> with that attitude i can see why no one is helping you on freenode .. <1> for the majority, this is not the case. they do not have time to free themselvs, and there is nothing wrong with someone providing a polished set of tools for them to use. linux is not about pain, or in fact, any one thing. it is whatever you want to make it if you have the skill and this will be done for certain. <4> i realize your frustration .. <4> but i suggest you take the time to learn a few things about linux <1> would you like to read the question i wrote? it was very plain and polite. also, no one is talking in the channel. <4> you are mistaken <4> you are on the wrong network then .. i am there <4> there are at least a dozen people talking right now <1> we will see. michael roberts has tried with linspire, and he will not be the last <4> what i see you saying is ."i want someone to make a nice and eay point and click thing for everything so i don't have to learn anything about it" <4> i'm not trying to be mean to you <4> i am pointing out what i see <4> you will get respect and learn things much faster if you have patience and at least attempt to learn to fix your problems on your own <4> every package on fedora can be reinstalled with yum or rpm <4> if gnome is broken .. you can groupremove and groupinstall it <4> use yumex <4> i'll bet if i had your system i could fix it by removing and reinstalling packages .. or simply doing a fresh install <1> its the same as it was ten years ago; all the hard core dudes saying 'you dont need a gui; i can do everyting i need from the command line' and in the background, the tools were being developed. now no one says ' you dont need gui tools command line is enough' linux is going to be bigger than what it is now, and this is going to happen through making it more polished and easier to use and maintain. the people actually doning the work <4> i agree linux will take over .. <4> and money will also disappear <1> and not because people learn the inner wokings of their systems <4> as soon as people realize a few key things in this world about themselves .. and the state we've gotten ourselves into collectively <1> it will grow and is growing because it is turming intto a nicer and easy point and click thing. those who resist this chanve are agains the spread of linux. <4> i'm not against point and click things .. i'm agains the mentality you are espousing <4> " i don't need to know it .. someone else will swoop in and "save" me" <1> that is a mischaracterization. you know perfectly well a housewife that just wants to get her email reilably should not be expected to have to install gnome from source. <4> you shouldn't be installing source in fedora <4> especially gnome <1> And that makes my point perfectly. <6> Anyone around? <6> When I switch over to a text console, CTRL+ALT+F1, I get all these crazy messages from selinux, how can I turn that garbage off? <7> Hi Guys.. Anyone played much with Apache Clustering? <8> i tried installing fedora 5 on a p3 machine...comes up to the 'select keyboard screen' the moment i choose, the pc hangs..any ideas?
