<0> In May 2005, Bram Cohen released a new beta version of BitTorrent that eliminated the need for web site hosting of centralized servers known as "trackers". It is now possible to have a torrent up in minutes, with a file, a website, and no understanding of how it works.
<1> I loved the dutch's keeper response after losing the match: "We were better"
<1> No you weren't. You lost. :P
<2> Exactly... I've seen many programs using external shells to do bittorrent, but that ****s - both memory/cpu-wise :(
<3> Mithandir: heh there was a"but ..." after that
<1> yeah
<1> which was equally silly
<3> The_Morph: Azureus had distributed tracking for ages.
<1> "but they were smarter" oh ... so being smart is not part of being good ?
<3> it was pathetic how much times they missed
<3> many
<0> ki9a, it's just that "and no understanding of how it works" that's funny to me.
<3> Mithandir: THey finally found out why he gave so many cards
<3> SOS child villages would get 3000 euro per card.
<1> heh
<0> what a sick idea

<0> either give them the money without conditions or screw it.
<1> and for today's "well, duh" headline: " Forgetfulness hints at Alzheimer's "
<3> Let me check my alternative news mailling list.
<1> and a german entrepeneur is laucnhing an airline for smokers

<3> # Egyptian archaeologists find sarcophagi near the Giza pyramids.
<1> I've found some there too. The egyptian museum is almost right next to them
<3> :P
<4> hi! can someone help me with reading from dbf files with delphi ?
<5> Hmm... sticky IPs don't appear to be sticking in my router. Wierd.
<6> Apply more glue?
<5> Hmmm. anyone know off the top of their head how to force a release/renew of a DHCP address in linux?
<7> ifdown
<7> ifup?
<8> ifup/down is a distro dependant command
<5> Bringing the interface down and then up didn't fix it.
<8> that won't
<5> This is strange... I can't decide if it's a problem with the router or the linux box.
<5> Why do I have a feeling this is going to take a while.
<8> bringing an interface up/down doesn't make another dhcp request
<8> nah
<8> what distro are you running
<5> RH 8
<8> are you sure you're not just getting the same lease address from the dhcp server ?
<5> No, I'm not sure.
<8> tcpdump -lenx -s 1500 port bootps or port bootpc | dhcpdump
<5> But I want to elminate that by renewing.
<8> install tcpdump & dhcpdump
<8> then cycle the interface, see if it sends a request
<7> this is an example of why linux will not go mainstream
<2> MrB: Exactly :)
<8> pfft
<5> ok, I got it to release and renew, and it gave me a different IP, but not the one it was supposed to.
<5> So... router problem.
<8> i have stacks of *nix/bsd boxes
<8> i love them
<6> MrB: I'm starting to feel everytime I have a nutty little windwos problem I should pipe up with "This is why linux is going to wipe out windows eventually."
<6> But that would be about as stupid as what you're doing lately, so I won't.
<7> thanks.
<9> Tibbe: can't say i miss making everything from source after i switched from freebsd to debian :p
<6> You don't have to install from source on freebsd anyways.
<6> They have precompiled packages just like the major linux distros.
<9> no you can use the packages i know
<2> ootje: Yeah, sure - it isn't always required, I know. But I tried once with Apache, on a Pentium II. Installing something shouldn't take an hour, for crying out lod :(
<9> Tibbe: compiling will :P
<6> Tibbe: Trying installing Oracle on a P4 on Windows.
<6> Although, honestly, you have to blame Oracle's crap-*** java installer there.
<5> Ah, apparently there's a firmware upgrade that addresses DHCP issues. Good to know.
<2> Drk: Yeah, sure, and some games take too long too, but compare like with like - I installed apache in a minute on the same machine on Windows :)
<10> how do you enable/disable xp theme for a form? by including XPManifest, you get it for everything, not only the form you dropped it on...
<6> Who brought up macs?
<6> YOU DEVIANT.
<8> Tibbe: installing from source isnt the preferred method
<8> its all distro dependant :)
<5> ok, firmware time... Be back shortly, I hope. :)
<2> warjest: Yeah, sure, I bet it is - I was using RedHat, which DOES have RPM's, but look at the order in which Apache lists'em: * Unix Source: httpd-2.2.2.tar.gz [PGP] [MD5]
<2> * Unix Source: httpd-2.2.2.tar.bz2 [PGP] [MD5]
<2> * Win32 Source: httpd-2.2.2-win32-src.zip [PGP] [MD5]
<2> * Win32 Binary (MSI Installer): apache_2.2.2-win32-x86-no_ssl.msi [PGP] [MD5]

<2> * Other files
<2> Going into * Other files seems a little strange, to me :)
<6> Blame the distributor, not the os.
<8> well
<8> i hate everything about redhat so i cant comment there
<6> Although, a big part of that is probably ebcause you're supposed to use the dh package management tools to install instead of downloading a rpm from apache.
<5> That fixed it. Excellent.
<6> So, they just sorta shove it off to the side.
<2> Drk: That's one thing a newbie to Linux so totally would know, right? I just noticed that the *old* copy of RedHat i ran had a likewise *old* copy of Apache, so I installed from source :(
<6> I don't think a total newbie would turn to installing from source right off the bat either. :)
<8> that is because redhat does not change the versions of software that is released with that version
<8> it only changes the patch level, for compatibility reasons
<8> if you want to upgrade apache, then upgrade redhat. you keep your windows up to date i'm ***uming ?
<6> Redhat takes care of most that automagically nowadays with up2date.
<2> warjest: Apache isn't a part of RedHat, goddamit. I don't use Windows update to update mIRC, or any other program. Nor should I.
<6> But what if you could? Wouldn't it be nice to get all of your software updates from one place? ;)
<11> like Windows Update?
<11> :P
<2> Drk: No thanks.
<6> No? You prefer having to deal with dozens of different vendor patchs programs?
<6> Why?
<12> sorry guys, I just jumped in the nix conversation... I've been using nix for 6 years and I love it, but there are some things it could do better for sure (from an end user POV)
<6> Oh, no doubt. No OS is perfect.
<8> i'll never run a nix desktop though
<8> i'm quite partial to windows, but for networking.. i love it
<2> Drk: Well, for one thing - the strain on such a system would be fenomenal when major vendors released patches. It'd almost have to use bittorrent, which it wouldn't. And I guess I'm a Linux guy here, I want full control over what gets installed and when :) I've got Windows Update on automatic, and that wouldn't do for many apps that are crictical to what I'm doing. I wouldn't be able to trust every vendor of every program to test their patc
<6> I said provided through the same mechanism. Not forced down your throat as soon as they're released. :)
<6> warjest: I've been tempted to run a nix desktop a few times, but I still don't.
<6> Windows is stable / good enough for me. I just kind of want to try it out to see what its like.
<12> Drk: any reason?
<12> gotcha
<11> Linsux sux
<11> :)
<12> you know, your license of windows is a lender copy right? You dont own it and M$ can take it away at any time
<6> I'm not a windows hater. I just dislike people that paint perfectly decent OSs with unduly broad strokes because they don't understand a few bits or pieces.
<2> I also tried Kylix on one of my Linux trips. But that really ****ed, at least on that computer. Getting into the program took ages..
<12> kylix sux
<6> They would have a hard time taking away my copy of windows, since its an educational version and doesn't use the authorization / acticvation system.
<12> itwas ALMOST usable, but needed more development
<11> Drk: I beleive linux should stay in the server market and windows the desktop, they both suit those fields :)
<6> I guess if they want to drive over here and reposses the cd they can.
<2> Drk: I said from the start, I'd love to leave windows, but I haven't found an alternative yet that would do the same things....
<8> there isnt one
<12> Tibbe: I hear ya. I still use windows simply because there arent comparable apps available for nix
<6> Tibbe: No reason to anwyays. If windwos does what you want it to, stick with it.
<12> lemme ask this tho...
<12> Would YOU want to fly in a plane, powered by windows? How about some open heart surgery with a laser powered by windows? Remember, windows suffers insane latency issues
<6> I never said windows was a general purpose use it in everything OS.
<6> So that question is irrelevant.
<5> Microsoft is pretty explicit that Windows is NOT a real time OS.
<12> right and I wasnt arguing that Drk: I was simply asking
<6> No single OS is best at everything. Anyone who tries to force it to be so deserves what they get.
<12> but if M$ had their way, planes WOULD be powered by win etc
<11> not the windows we have now
<5> They would create a real-time windows that could handle the task.
<6> And windows would be much better and more stable as a result, because of the certification required to use it in applications like that.
<6> So, no, it wouldn't be a problem.
<11> which is the point, they'd have to code something completely different, like PPC
<6> I can't think of the last time I got a bsod.
<5> Microsoft isn't in that business though.
<6> heck, I can't remeber the last time my computer actually crashed.
<5> Microsoft does volume software... they sell an $800 software package to 30 million people.
<6> Oh, no, I can remeber the last time I bsod'd.
<6> Bad memory stick.
<5> An OS to run aircraft would be completely different... it'd be 30 million dollar software with 8 customers.
<2> Drk: I don't get them either, but many of my less computer literate friends are still getting plenty - which is admittedly mostly due to other stuff than windows, but still - windows should prevent them....
<6> No OS protects clueless users from themselves.
<6> I still remeber the time I caused a panic in linux by deleting the running kernel
<6> Was trying to build a new one, and didn't actually read the instructions.
<2> I installed linux once and erased my 25gb data partition, shock full with music and stuff, by placing the swap there :)
<12> heh
<12> n00b stories are great
