<0> Vibes: Did you look at that site I sent you? Seems right up your alley... <1> they make patch kits for that. <1> really easy to do. <2> SirPsycho: Yeah, checking it out right now, actually. <2> DaynaGirl: Well, this is actually a little more complex than just a hole in the pipe. <2> I'm trying not do what I really need to do, because I can't. It involves a gasket and a stripped bolt... <1> oh gawd. hate those. <1> they're expensive. <2> Basically, where the exhaust manifold/header meets the first pipe in the exhaust system, there are three bolts. <1> *nod* I know what you're talking about. <0> Gaskets are evil, evil things. <2> One is stripped, and so the connection can only be tightened with 2 of the bolts. As such, I can't get a gasket to stay in the right place, and so there's a little leak right there under the manifold. <0> Good night, all. Gotta get some sleep. <1> and the area is so damn hot... you can't use a liquid gasket filler. <1> tap3: yes, wait for a while net is a bit slow here. <2> Yup... That's actually what I've been hunting for, is a high temp liquid gasket, but I don't think they make anything for that far forward in the system.
<1> are: how long? <1> tap3: plz wait, i m just starting <1> are: how long do you think it will be until the net speeds up? <1> tap3: no, net's speed is fine. The appication is starting up. <1> are = me. <1> tap3 = person in india. <2> So, the RIGHT thing to do is drill out the stripped bolt and replace it. <2> But I can't get to it without taking the engine out. <1> right. <2> And I can't take the engine out because I don't have an engine crane. <1> which is why its so expensive to repair. <2> Yup. <1> you can rent them. <1> if you were really interested. <1> which i'm guessing you're not. <2> I don't know that I trust my mechanical skills quite that far. <2> I would be interested, but not on my car. :) <2> I would actually really like to have a spare car that I can just screw up, to learn about such things. <1> interesting thing is... you have to get the engine out to get at the bolt... but you've got to get the bolt out to pull the engine out... <2> But this is kinda like making drastic changes on a production system... you don't really want to do that. <2> Oh that won't be a problem. The end that's stripped is a nut end, so it's got nothing holding it in. <1> unless you plan to cut the exhaust tubing :-) <1> anyways. <2> No, it will just slip right out. It's not actually a bolt - it doesn't have a head. <2> So it just screws into the manifold, and then a nut secures the pipe to it. <2> Kind of a wierd little device, actually. <2> But it works. <1> and usually heat welded tot he manifold. <2> Until I stripped the nut side taking the nut off when I replaced the pipe. :) <2> Yup. <2> So the nut came off, but now there's nothing for it to go back on to. <1> someone torqued it off? <2> I did. <1> did it break off below the plane of the joint? <2> It's not broken, just stripped. What once was threaded is now nearly smooth. <1> have you tried retheading it? <2> How? Can't get a tool to it without pulling the engine. <1> well... they get tools in there without pulling the engine to attach the pipe... <2> There isn't enough space in there to get anything more than a wratchet up there. <1> they make re-threading tools that fit inside socket wrenches. <2> Really? I've only seen fairly bulky power tools. <2> hmmm. <2> But if I could get something that would attach to a standard socket ratchet, I could get it up there and maybe do (or un-do) some damage. <1> you could also drill out the center of the stud... and screw something into the end of it to hold a spacer in place effectively clamping it down. <2> Yeah, drilling it out is what I have considered the proper solution, but I can't get a drill up to it. <2> ...at least not any drill and bit that I own. <1> *nod* you'd need to rent an air powered drill. <1> very small... very powerful. <1> same for the dye set. <2> Yup <1> anyways... <2> You have given me hope on the rethreading though. <1> my mom is a truck driver... <2> I might have to tackle that next week. <1> she taught me (kicking and screaming) how to be self reliant mechanically. <1> I used to cry because of all the grease on my hands. <1> no child of hers would be taken by a man... just because they didn't know any better. <2> lol <2> Sounds to me like you could give any professional mechanic a run for his money. <1> nah. <1> I'm cursed with an engineering mind is all.
<1> my brain flies with alternative ideas. <1> and coming from a background where money for replacement parts was scarce... and tools = butter knife and high heels... I have lots of alternatives. <2> :) <2> I just do miraculous things with jb weld. :P <1> me too. <1> fixed my desk most recently. <2> But I have yet to come up with a way to fix this particular problem with JB weld. <1> they do make high temp jb weld... but not this high I don't think. <2> Yeah, the highest I've seen is like 650 degrees. <1> another thing I've just remembered... is self taping nuts <2> Does such a thing exist? <2> They'd have to have like diamond encrusted threads. <1> jussec. <1> nah... just be made of tougher material than the bolt they go on. <3> DaynaGirl: ? <2> I think my new goal in life is to be rich enough that every time I have car trouble, I can just buy a new car. :P <3> DaynaGirl: You are a Delphi programmer? <3> Hey I'm sorry by the way for my English and for what I say ;) <1> Mr_Jingle: no. I'm a stripper. I'm just ***ually attracted to geeky guys. <3> lol <2> Dayna, if you stripped I would find a die and rethread you. <3> That's not that bad then DaynaGirl <4> haha <1> Vibes: then your wife would do you the same :-) <1> why are guys so damn impressed that women can code? <3> Hey no lol <2> DaynaGirl: We're not impressed that they CAN, we're impressed that they DO. <2> Let's just say that the CS department in college was NOT the place to meet chicks. <1> where I went to school... half the instructors and at least 1/3rd of the advanced cl***es... were women. <3> You know DaynaGirl. One of my best friend is a white hat hacker and she is also a C coder... And she is just the best of the world after me <3> lol <3> Just kidding <1> I used to be a white hat hacker... <3> 09:50 here in switzerland <3> and I haven't slept much <1> then I gave it up... cuz a night in jail scared the piss outta me. <1> I also do C, C++, VB, Delphi, and a bunch of obscure scripting languages... <3> DaynaGirl: may I ask how old you are? <1> how old do you thnk I am? <3> DaynaGirl: congratulations <3> You are maybe 21, 22? <3> Oh <3> No <3> Maybe more <3> 24 25 <1> I had a bf back in 77 who was a geek ghod. <3> ;) <2> My parents weren't even married then. <1> I had the serious thigh sweats for him... but he only wanted to talk about computers. <3> Ok. I'm a yung coder <3> just 18 <1> you are an embryo <4> white fat ****er? <1> MrNeutron: huh? <4> white hat hacker? <4> common typo ;) <3> DaynaGirl: Delphi is an easy language... At least when you see something on your screen. I've developped a couple of scripts to allow blind people to access Borland's interfaces easily but it's still difficult. <1> a person who hacks just cuz its there... not to do damage. <3> As I'm blind myself <3> It becomes quite difficult when you try to developpe an interesting application <1> legally blind... or absolutely blind? <2> A blind Delphi programmer? <3> Vibes: that's me yeah :P <2> Mr_Jingle: Marco Zehe? <3> DaynaGirl: I'm completely blind <3> who's that Vibes ? <1> I don't think I could be that interested in computers if I were blind. <3> Oh <5> so what does your text reader sound like whne i go waoefuwheofwhefiohwofwihf <5> ? <1> Goodge: You are evil. <5> haha <2> Mr_Jingle: A blind Delphi programmer. Thought maybe you were him. Apparently there are at least two. :)
