<0> i am having some problems with lcdproc and my debian box - i installed lcdproc using "apt-get install lcdproc" - LCDd seams to work - but i cannot find lcdproc anywhere. what happend to the lcdproc client? <1> is there an lcdproc-client in apt? <0> nope <2> good evening. <3> good evening :) <2> got hooked. <3> hm ? <2> the Jack Bauer thing. <3> erm <3> :) <2> ;) <4> :) <5> debian finally has a full install cd now <5> yay debian
<5> and debian is the shiznittle bomb shiznit <5> i love it <5> it is the be-all of-all the distros <5> apt-get......I dont like how redhat kinda stole the whole idea and just named it yum <5> apt-get is king <5> yum comes out my bum and apt-get is king of the net <6> HI my names keyra add me to your msn beefed@hotmail.com and check out my display pic , i love to play. seeya there. <5> in debian how can I make my resolution really small, by default gnome is huge <5> ? <7> edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 <5> k <5> thank you <7> find the line that says "DefaultDepth 24" and look at the number. It's probably 24 <7> then, find the corresponding SubSection "Display" <7> and add your desired mode first. So, mine reads Modes "800x600" "640x480" <5> well my old one started with 1280x1024 <5> but i forget the other one <5> what would make sense? <5> and not crash it <7> 1024x768 is the next smaller one <7> either should be fine for you. <5> ok <5> i only have to type it in the first section right? <5> not all the others? <5> that would take a while <7> just the section for your DefaultDepth <7> unless you use other depths, which is unlikely <7> when you are finished with your editing, do /etc/init.d/gdm restart <7> I am presuming that you use gdm. If you use kdm, then put kdm instead of gdm. <7> ok. Now, my turn. I have working sound on my mobo. The modules (I think -- I did "lsmod |grep sound") are nvsound and soundcore. I installed a nice soundcard (M-Audio Audiophile) on a Sarge box. I want to be able to switch back and forth between the sound card (connected to a stereo) and the mobo's sound output (connected to my headphones). After I install the soundcard's drivers with alsaconf, the soundcard is working. <7> So, how do I turn off output to the soundcard and restore it to the mobo? I want to be able to switch between the two, but the only way I know how to right now is to halt the machine and remove the card! <8> GiftdKook: does your system recognize both cards? dmesg <7> well... <7> as you can see, I have both working. I just can switch back and forth between them. <7> Caligo, do you know how I can switch output between the devices? <5> ah <5> it is not working <5> and its set to start in gui mode <5> i put it in runlevel 3 <5> and still goes gui <5> grrrrrr <8> GiftdKook: you didnt answer my question so i guess i cannot help <7> hunh? In my original question I stated that both outputs work. So, naturally, the system recognizes both. <8> GiftdKook: i ofcourse meant simultaniously <8> whilst your pci card is in, does your system still recognize both cards <7> I will now check. <7> well, I am not sure of what I am seeing with the pci card back in. dmesg |grep sound shows nvsound: module license 'unspecified' taints kernel. and lsmod |grep sound shows the modules nvsound and soundcore... <7> but, output is to the pci card. Let me see if its drivers are installed... <7> yes. It's drivers are also installed. <8> thats good <8> i would ***ume one way to handle this would be to make a script to unload/load the drivers <8> so that you have one script that unloads the pci card and loads the mobo sound drivers <8> and one that does it the other way around <7> hrmm. the card has a lot of drivers. let me see. <7> It looks like I would not have to unload the mobo drivers -- because the system ignores them. <8> it would once you load them :) <7> Why is it not possible to tell the system to ignore the pci card just as it ignores the mobo sound? <8> when u wanna switch back to the pci <8> GiftdKook: the system ignores the "seccond" card usually <7> hunh. ok. <7> I would think that the pci card is the second card.
<8> depends on several different factors <8> but anyhow <7> rmmod snd_ice1712 <7> ERROR: Module snd_ice1712 is in use <7> now what? <9> now what? now you go tell mommy you need a huggy wuggy! <7> ok, one moment. <8> GiftdKook: first off, shut down sound applications, then forcibly unload it <8> (i have to add, there might be "smoother" ways to do this, but this is the only way i know of that ive tried) <7> shucks. this is exactly what I was afraid of. :/ <8> whot? <7> I am not using any audio devices. <7> Something very easy in M$ being impossible in nix. <7> or very difficult. <8> thats why nix is so much fun :) <8> makes a simple task as installing pointerdrivers a challenge ;) <8> hehe <7> I don't mind the challenge. I do mind having to turn off the box and remove the card to use my headphones. <7> well, I can't seem to remove the pci card's drivers. Even rmmod -f doesn't work. <8> is esd runnin? <7> I don't know. I restarted the box. <7> I will check. 3min. <7> perhaps I can use a command line prefix to send audio to the mobo? <8> well <8> im not entirely sure <10> OMG FRANCE BEAT BRAZIL <8> in soccer? <10> dude, shut up :) <7> no. esd does not appear to be running. <8> :) <7> I still can't remove the module.\ <7> hrmm. /dev/dsp1 exists but /dev/dsp does not. <7> hah HA! I think I have it. I removed the mobo's module and then replaced it. Now I have audio back on my headphones. <7> Thanks for the module idea, Caligo. <8> np <8> glad it sort of helped :) <7> hrmm. It looks like it works *once*. I can boot with the pci working, remove the nvsound and soundcore modules and modprobe nvsound -- then I have headphones. And I can use alsaconf to restore the pci card, but I can't remove the nvsound or soundcore modules again. :/ <8> hmm <8> give it time :) <8> i think it should work as soon as the drivers knows its not in use <7> bah. I don't think the system will let go of them. <11> Happy 4th <5> tues is 4th <5> anyway......I like the new all in one debian dvd <5> not a hard config or setup at all <5> apt-get .....gets you what YOU want, that does not come with the cd after the install <5> finally they made it easier <5> I do like the simplicity of it compared to the old method <10> radiance? <9> i heard radiance is the mighty lord of the g0ats who will teach you the magic ! <10> sleighty: do you want in ill add you to the email group then <12> i am added, aren't i? <12> if not, add me plz <10> will you be helping out? <12> probably, when i can be useful in some way ;) <10> ok let me know when you made up your mind <12> i think first i have to read the emails again properly... <10> im just referring to when you have made up your mind about helping <10> this email list is not for onlookers :) <12> haha <12> yeah ok <10> hehe <10> just write an article or two. you can spend 5 mins / day on that :) <10> anyways, whats your email <10> done <12> thx <12> time to take a bath... later <10> later <10> use lot of foam <10> napta rza <10> YEA I FOUND MY q3KEY <10> wohoo <10> then i know what i will be doing today <10> wakey wakey!
