<0> hehe this is during the windows install... i just looked it up online, says it's probably a bad disk, which it probably is
<0> since i forgot to buy new floppies at compusa :( i'm using an old (from 1993 LOL) disk
<1> Heheh.
<1> Mmm...
<1> I'd say check www.bootdisk.com and look for "quick XP boot diskette", that will be your temporary solver.
<1> Also on that site lots of handy floppy zips to help you out on bootproblems.
<0> Treval, the floppy was bad.. i was able to get it to repair but it still won't boot
<0> i'm wondering if i will have to re-install.. i upgraded from a p4 (single core) to an amd x2 - i'm wondering if i should've done something to prepare windows for that
<0> it's xp pro btw
<1> Myes myes.
<0> Treval, what do u think?
<1> Meh.
<1> I see you have an nvidiacard since nvata.sys is for that.
<1> Hm.
<1> http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12086
<1> Maybe try updating your nforce drivers ( see link )

<0> thanks, i'll try it

<6> hello, I got some ram today that's DDR433 and it's backwards compatible. My mobo only supports up to DDR400, will there be any problems with this? It seems to be working fine, but would there be any overheating problems?
<2> Habern, nope
<2> not unless it's overclocked
<6> k, thanks
<0> hey
<0> quick question.. im about to re-install windows (without reformatting) and i've got a p***worded account on my pc, which i NEED access to my files after the re-install. Will i be able to access them? (or is there a way i can enter my p***word to access them once my system is back up and running?)
<0> i just tried hooking it up to this pc to backup the files but this is xp home
<7> what os are you running?
<7> are you running xp home ?
<7> just when you reinstall it name the old YOU account to YOU.stuff
<7> then using admin create your OLD YOU account back
<7> all your settings will remain intact
<7> then xcopy *.* /s c:\documents and settings\my username\*.*
<7> from old to new.
<7> ooops last *.* not necessary, be in the dir you are copying from to
<7> it's amazing how that works, but i swear it does... since documents and settings is not under windows dir anymore, now if they can just factory default it to another partition i will love them forever.
<0> xp home is on this pc but the drive with my files is xp pro
<0> i was just about to go ahead and re-install, but.. it said that all the settings (including stuff in the my docs folder) will be deleted
<0> now i don't want to chance it

<0> i'd sooner buy a new hd to install xp then do that lol
<7> it worked for me...
<7> but i had to go on as admin and create all the old user accounts agian, but first rename the original ones to username.stuff
<7> then just create the user accounts you want, and all the programs and everything magically comes back into the start bar...
<7> then just copy the documents from the username.stuff files to the equivalent username account
<0> GayPcTek, yeah, i vaguely remember doing that in the past, but i didn't use a sp2 cd back then to install
<7> why don't you just make a directory and cp the tree you want to save to the new directory?
<7> just don't low level the drive, don't format it, don't partition it...
<7> hey use those free tools for copying ntfs data and moving it somewhere else.
<0> what free tools?
<7> also if you have data on an encrypted ntfs partition, the easiest way to get it w/o jumping through hoops is to just copy it to a fat32 partition, windows gets so frustrated it automatically decrypts the data for you on the fly.
<7> some encryption... lol.
<0> what ntfs tools are you talking about?
<7> i have them on this server i think
<7> let me check and i'll tell you the name.
<0> ok
<7> ntfsdos
<7> they let you boot up from a dos diskette
<7> ntfsw98
<7> then just copy and move ntfs files everywhere...
<0> if i can get the files backed up to another drive, i have no problem re-installing/re-reformatting
<0> awesome
<7> hang on i'll find a link to the site.
<0> thanks
<0> great now i have to go scavenge for another floppy disk LOL. do they have a cd image by any chance? :P
<7> ntfs.com
<0> who'd have thunk it :P
<7> yes
<7> there is a bootable iso image for the ntfs utilities
<7> it's at ntfs.com
<0> awesome
<0> you da man :D
<0> active boot? that's it, right?
<7> scroll down
<0> oh ok
<0> got it.. ntfs reader
<7> freeware
<0> yup :) very cool. ok, now to figure out the best way to do this lol
<0> i hope i didn't encrypt my files... i think i just set it so that other users can't read them... i hope lol
<7> security permissions you mean ?
<7> security permissions are different from encrypting.
<0> yeah
<7> so hopefully you didn't do it.
<7> :)
<0> sec perms
<0> Yeah, i think i learned my lesson the first time i encrypted them LOL
<7> you know what i like... that card that dude sells on ebay...
<7> that thing is a miracle and saves me so much greif...
<0> i went through something like this when i upgraded and said next time i wouldn't encrypt, just set perms
<7> it's like 15 bucks
<0> what thing?
<7> ok get this... it was developed by the chinese for the israeli army information services. it's called "magic card"
<7> it actually works great too... if you get a virus, if your friends fubar your pc, whatever, just reboot, type in your restore code, and it has the whole pc back to new in 2 minutes.
<0> wow
<0> very cool
<7> way faster than a system restore, but whatever the last 'freeze' you put on the system is, is where it will restore the system too, including all data, all programs, all everything.
<8> heya quick question, I run a website for a friend, I just found out the forums have been hacked.. can they get to the rest of the website too? along with the personal info/CC info signed up with ?
<7> i'd have to look at the code to answer that question.
<9> i just use good old norton ghost
<7> ghost is good, but i've had a lot of bad experiences with ghost.
<0> wonkalow, yeah, depends on how much of the site is integrated and how they got in
<8> he left a msg, but I cant translate it, no idea what language it is
<9> not me,i find if you're careful and doublecheck, its fine
<9> never had it screw me over once
<8> not too sure how, I just went to the forums and its all deleted and theres just a message there
<9> i use it on most of my customers pcs
<0> OvEr_LoAD, cool
<7> what are the forums location ?
<0> ok well i'm off to try ntfs reader.. i have to rob.. err "borrow" this hdd to transfer the files to LOL
<8> www.blvdknights.net/phpbb2/index.php
<8> oops sec
<0> thanks again GayPcTek
<8> http://www.blvdknights.net/phpBB2/index.php
<7> you are very welcome
