<0> well, they're... obviously not too clever. <1> eheh.. wikipedia describes a squid as someone who rides a motorcycle in flip flops :) <0> cuz anyone in the year 2006 should be aware what the consequences are when a skull hits asphalt at >30mph <2> the stock market ****ed today <0> strtok: worldwide or which exchange <2> nasdaq <1> i wear a helmet even on a bicycle because concussions ****ing ****. head hurts and you end up puking usually. puking with a splitting headache is about the worse thing I can think of. <2> this whole tech company options thing <1> strtok, blame israel. <0> blame david h***elhoff ;) <2> the 60 companes that have options under review <2> and the more that will follow <2> broadcom restated $750 million expense for options today <0> i've never traded on the american market. <0> guess I just don't feel like I understand it fully <0> + I'm always scared the USD is going to hell when I need to sell.
<1> the USD is already hell. it's a good time to buy:) <1> right now is a bad time to invest in the euro <0> why didn't I buy lots of oil after 9/11... <0> it was like $20 IIRC <0> now it's.. $80? <1> some people did. <0> OrngeTide: yeah, lots of people suspected that the oil price would sink like a rock <1> it's just going to keep going up. <0> OrngeTide: but it did exactly the opposite <0> poor shorters <1> right now is a godo time to buy oil commodities. you're pretty much guarenteed to make money in the short term <1> s/godo/good <0> OrngeTide: what's the short term to you? <1> SgtUnix, less than a quarter. <0> mkay. <0> OrngeTide: Some people think short term is <2 days. Not me though. <1> it'll probably be going up for a couple years. beyond that I cannot say. <0> Day traders. <0> Most day traders don't make it thru the bear markets. <1> 2 days is zero to me. <0> The good investors, long term investors make it through the bear markets and do reasonably well in the bull markets. <1> there are negative mutual funds you can use to protect yourself in bear markets. <0> OrngeTide: real men trade their own stocks :) <0> OrngeTide: unfortunately that's extremely time consuming <1> doing shorting yourself is too high risk. <1> you should do normal purchases yourself, and short through a negative mutal fund <0> I don't short <1> you don't because shorting is so risky:) <0> or lack of knowledge, I don't have any experience with shorting at all <1> obviously you won't make much on a negative fund. because you're basically paying insurance with part of the profits so you don't have to take on as much risk <1> SgtUnix, shorting is complicated. <0> it hasn't appealed to me yet <0> when I'm ready I'll look into it <1> i wouldn't really recommend it since there is no upper limit of what you can owe. <1> SgtUnix, i want that retro looking ducati. http://www.ducati.com/bikes/my2006/ducatiModel.jhtml?family=sportcl***ic&modelName=GT1000-06 <1> the sport1000 is nice too (almost the same as the gt1000, although the gt has a really nice looking tank) <0> OrngeTide: i've drooled over those pics already :) <0> definitely timeless. <3> OrngeTide: does parallels have free/trial thing? <1> myrddin, i don't think so. <1> the mac version works well for me. <1> although vmware has more features and has a free version. so if you run windows/linux go with that. <1> parallels has a nice clean interface though. <1> i'm disappointed parallels doesn't have a VNC feature though. <1> but it does have a really slick serial port feature which seems to play well with kgdb. <3> they have a free 14 day trial. does parallels let you point the virtual cdrom to an iso file? <4> yes <1> yea. i do that all the time. :) <5> Hello <5> how are you guys? <3> excellent <5> awesome <1> hi myrddin <3> trying out parallels on my 'doze machine <1> do you have VT-x ? <3> no? <1> oh. then parallels won't be really any more interesting than vmware. <3> hmm. this doesn't seem to be launching the iso very well <3> I don't need it to be more interesting. I just need to run this linux install in a virtual setting. :)
<1> i couldn't get parallels to work with ubuntu 6.06 server, but it worked fine for my own linux disk image. go figure <3> which works just fine in vmware. but I'm working from home today. Had to install something, figured I'd give parallels a shot <3> this is our own linux install image (based on redhat, but modified a bit). it's not really loading the kernel, though. <3> grub comes up, but it's not able to get any farther than that <1> that's too bad. try vmware server. it's free <3> if I can't get a vm type thing to work on my machine here, I have to vpn into work and do it remote, which I really don't wanna do <5> I have a specific question related to development, not necessarily strictly to C. Say a company has a systems architect, a systems engineer and several systems analysts... how would a project start? Who talks with the client initially? What are all of their parts? I know a Systems Architect has to develop high-level requirements, but don't they also have to meet with the customer like the analysts do? <5> and this isn't homework... the reason I ask is I see jobs for systems architects and systems analysts, and their description seems very similar <5> almost like one is overhead or not needed <1> well normally you need to write some documents. a PRD(product requirements doc) which is written from input from marketing and customers. an ERD(engineering requirements doc) which is based on the PRD. from the ERD you write a budget and a funtional spec. from the functional spec you write design documents for the components. and from the PRD and functional spec you write a test plan. <6> The analyst gathers information about the client requirements and current situation, and then works with the architect to develop the plan, iirc <5> so the architect doesn't have face time with the customer? <1> i try not to think about it in terms of what position does what. because at startups you generally wear multiple hats. i think of it in terms of what documentation needs to be done to determine process. <5> oh... <5> I was just trying to understand how larger organizations, such as microsoft, oracle, etc... work on a project <1> well any one of those people could have face time with a customer to clarify the original requirements. <5> oh... <1> but really it's marketing, sales and some analyist that sits down with a customer and figures out what features are wanted and how much the customer will pay to have them <1> sometimes the analyist and architect are the same person. <5> alright, how does a systems engineer fit in? <5> or is that just a general title thrown around? <1> like i never worked at a place that had an actual analyist position. it was usually the CTO or architects sitting down with a client. <3> vt-x kinda requires an intel processor, yes? <1> myrddin, yes. there is an equivalent for AMD but it's not available on most of thier processors <1> my laptop has VT-x and so does my el cheapo dual core desktop i built. <5> thanks guys for the info <7> OrngeTide: isn't it called pacifica on AMDs? <7> or is that a similar but incompatible virtualization system <1> that's the codename. but it has some other name now. <7> ah <1> intel VT was called vanderpool technology. now VT is just virtualization technology extesions. <7> I've been reading up on XenSource virtualization, and that was mentioned in one of their whitepapers <1> VT-x might actually be the generic name for both intel and amd versions. I dunno <1> i'm running Xen. <7> oh ffs... my mouse is spazzing out again <7> STOP WITH THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON <5> what is XenSource virtualization? <1> i'm kind of disappointed that xen+md+lvm as root doesn't really work though. <3> xen won't run on windows without vt-x <1> who would want to run windows anyways <5> hah <3> though, I suppose I could run xen on a local linux box here at home and interact with it via a cygwin x server on my windows box <3> well, when I'm at work, it's a purely linux environment. here at home, it's much more heterogeneous <1> i need to finish setting up my server. i've been crazy busy the last 4 weeks. it's still sitting on my desk at home. <3> and none of my linux boxes have any video hardware <1> i have pci-express cards in all my linux desktops:) <1> myrddin, you should see the new rm-f.net. 1tb diskspace. 8gb ram. quad 1.66Ghz <3> OrngeTide: I don't have any linux desktops at home, is the thing. they're all rack mount server types. <1> eheh. <3> oooh. that sounds nice. :) <1> yea. i put the whole thing in a 1U (hotswap SATA bays) for under $3k. <1> it would've been like $2k if it wasn't full of ECC RAM :P <3> quad proc. which cpu? <1> two dual-core Xeon LVs. <3> cool <1> which is pretty much the same thing as a intel core duo. <3> what kind of disk setup? <1> very low power server. <1> two 250g, two 300g. i'm doing raid-1 on the two 250g and using the 300g as sort of "scratch" space. <1> i'll just let users keep like 1g in thier home dir. and they can keep an arbitrary amount of junk on the scratch volumes. <3> omg. in order to install vmware on my windows box, I have to have IIS running. <1> oh yea. i forgot about that <1> i was pretty pissed about that too. <3> grr <1> you dont' need that for VMware player. that's why i run vmware player instead of vmware server. <1> i just use the qemu tools to build disk images (vmware player can't make images) <3> well, maybe parallels is trying to boot the kernel. <3> it's got my cpu pegged <1> yea. mine just hung with the cpu pegged too. <3> does it get past that? <1> never. <3> pphht <1> i had to make my own boot disk
