<0> i only lived on the coasts in the US and never felt weird about being an atheist.. it's different in other parts of the country.. the US is not as homogenous as foreigners think
<1> OT: you know of any X window managers that you can configure to put menu bars at the top of the screen? (Instead of the top of the window.) Like on MacOS.
<2> i think redhat is like $39 in the stores.
<1> OT: I think it looks better that way.
<2> niv_, zero.
<3> $99 is between 2.5 and 5 visits to the restaurant
<4> kde
<4> gnome
<2> not really
<1> ack: hmm.. really?
<5> Yeah, generalising for the US is really tougher than most Europeans think
<4> yup
<4> though i hate gnome
<2> not like macos. you can sort of put stuff at the top.
<1> ack: I'm on solaris, I could fire up gnome. Using CDE right now.

<4> i put the taskbar bar at top in windows too
<2> but the point is that it's not the window manager. it's got more to do with what the toolkit can do.
<4> oh wait .. you really mean menu bar
<4> ... yeah, one of gnome or kde can do that ... i forget which
<1> ack: yeah the "File Edit View"
<2> yea. he means like <F>ile <E>dit ...
<1> macos has always had a slick look to it
<2> niv_, you could modify gtk+ to do it pretty easily. (like maybe 4 days of work) but then it would only be effective for your gtk+ apps. you'd still have to tweak QT (actually someone already did this tweak to QT)
<1> hmm.. not worth the trouble to do the programming
<1> if it was a config thing that'd be cool
<2> yea. the US is very large and has a lot of different regions, often they overlap one another.
<4> there is
<1> im gonna fire up gnome and see what it can do as far as that.
<2> i think ack is right that there is a config thing to do it. but i don't remember which one supports the menubar thingy
<6> wow
<6> years, man.. years
<4> if your fans are coming on too often it's more likely your fans are dirty than the threshholds need changing
<6> Gambit! ****0rs gambit*
<7> time to blow all the dust out
<2> hi somatose
<3> is Gambit alive ?
<6> hey OT!
<3> because if not, is it necrofilia, or what ?
<6> hmm
<1> hmm
<6> so, void of the necrophilia (haha, pun), I have a question
<1> for some reason solaris10 won't fire up gnome
<1> is the java desktop system gnome?
<3> no
<1> ive never used anything but cde and openwindows
<3> s/tries/tried/
<1> hmm, well JDS wont start on this box for some reason. just exits after a black screen after logging in.
<1> sol8/9 had gnome?
<3> aha
<1> i didn't like sol7/8/9 much.
<6> I'm developing an application that has to store a login and p***word so these credentials can be used to login to a remote system via http
<3> sol 9, as official packages
<3> sol8 as, sort of unofficial packages
<1> i liked sol2.5.1 and 2.6
<6> I'd like to store the login and p***word securely on the local machine
<1> jumped from 2.6 -> 10
<1> didnt see much of a reason for 7, 8, 9
<3> somatose: just gimme money and specs and get back ready product
<6> Aeon_, I'm thinking... umm.. well.. no?
<3> ok
<3> but the reason probably is ....
<3> ... you want to install backdoors ... yourself ?
<6> nay! I'm not doing any sort of crackery here
<8> Ubuntu ate my Windows partition.
<8> There's a holy war on my computer.
<6> hey Teckla =)
<8> Hi :)
<8> So I have this 80 GB hdd that I created a 40 GB partition on and installed Windows.
<3> backdoors != cracking
<8> Then I told Ubuntu to install itself into the unused portion of the hdd.
<6> Aeon_, call it what you want, it's irrelevant =)
<8> The install got part way through before locking up.

<8> So I figured "no big deal".
<1> lol @ crackery
<3> /ignores somatose
<8> Then went to reboot into Windows...and...nope!
<8> Ubuntu ate Windows (or the partition table or something).
<8> Nasty!
<1> aeon: that reminds ofmy solaris remote kernel backdoor
<2> well i gotta go to a meeting. adios.
<6> bai bai OT
<3> niv_: which backdoor ?
<3> /ignores somatose`
<3> /ignores somatose` all
<2> Teckla, ubuntu's partition thingy is scary as hell. i installed ubuntu on my mac and i had to check 10 times to make sure i wasn't erasing MacOS
<3> ignores somatose` all
<1> aeon: http://mizar.lod.com/~n/skbd.c
<3> oh ****
<6> Aeon_, lol
<3> heh nice
<2> Teckla, the best way to install ubuntu is on it's own harddrive with the other one unplugged. gentoo is many many times less scary to install in a dual-boot situation.
<8> OrageTide: I never really did anything except say "use this unused portion of the hdd and create whatever partitions you need".
<9> Hmmmm, I wanna make like.. an rpg in php
<3> Teckla: Ubunty mispartitioned my HD, too
<8> It wasn't a big deal, it was a clean Windows install, easy to replace, fortunately.
<6> really, though, I suppose there is no sure fire way. I could use a symmetrical encryption, but then I'd have to store the encryption key somewhere, and that somewhere will still be accessible
<1> hahahaha www.yourgoingtohell.com/ouija.html
<8> But Ubuntu is definately scary when it comes to partitioning!
<9> someone can't spell you're
<1> he spelt "you're" wrong
<1> coulda at least done youre or youaregoingtohell.com
<1> Recently I decided to compile this page on this deadly tool of Lucifer mainly because I stumbled across something on the net that startled me. It seems some clueless programmers are actually using shockwave plugins on pages and building online witchboa
<1> rds
<6> so what is the most common method for storing sensitive data (without a database) that you will have to retrieve in some plaintext format?
<1> I warn you now these things work and work well, demons jump at a chance to get you to commit the sin of necromancing.
<1> crazy mother****er
<1> there are actually people who think that ****
<6> and this is in windows, so would the best option be storing this info in the registry?
<6> anyone know how the gmail notifier does it?
<8> somatose`: How much data?
<1> also funny are godhatesfags.com (and godhatesfigs.com)
<6> Teckla, just a p***word
<0> somatose, there is no method... you may as well just store it in cleartext
<6> vio, I suppose that's true....
<0> somatose, any other method can be broken and is arguably worse than no security at all
<6> /worse/ than no security?
<0> soma, yeah... so people aren't lulled into a false sense of security
<6> yeah, I guess so...
<1> anyone do any solaris filesystem-driver programming?
<6> so, moving on to natural curiosity... I'm not all that great at deciphering dis***embly, so I couldn't figure out how gmail stores its login/p***word information
<3> i do linux kernel modules
<3> why
<6> anyone willing to take a quick look at it?
<1> I want to develop an encrypted filesystem
<0> soma they probably obsucate it and it would take quite some time to reverse engineer their algorithm
<0> obfuscate
<3> linux's dmcrypt
<1> I've been thinking about it for a while.. I was thinking I could do it without writing a device-driver, by making an NFS server that serves it up over loopback
<6> that's probably true, but really all I'm curious about it where they put the info
<1> isn't there something called CFS as well?
<0> soma in the registry probably
<6> vio, that's what I was thinking, but I ran the registry monitor from sysinternals and I didn't see any such thing
<6> maybe I missed it, but it's just absolutely eluded me, so here I am
<1> Aeon: I want it to only be mountable by having a certain key (which I'd presumably p*** to /usr/sbin/mount
<1> )
<0> soma, ahh ok.. sorry i don't know much more than that
<3> niv_: makes sense
<3> niv_: maybe you can make use of lofs
<10> **** i hate java, wtf does this mean.. java.lang.NoCl***DefFoundError
<3> cl*** definition is missing
<3> like, CL***PATH wrong
<3> or might be wrong version of java
<3> million reasons
<10> wonderful ;)
<9> oi anyone know how to install mysql
<10> finbally i get my 100kloc MPI program working with a profiler, it generates a log file, but the log file is a "clog" and the software wants to read "slog"
