<Bl4ckB1rD> init 5 is graphic interface
<Bl4ckB1rD> i presume you installed it...
<DaNnY|b0Y> dm
<DaNnY|b0Y> i think its doing something
<Bl4ckB1rD> it should be doing something
<Bl4ckB1rD> :)
<DaNnY|b0Y> it writes starting dm and nothing else
<Bl4ckB1rD> init 5 should send you directly to X window... if it doesn't, then you must have installed the system without X window...
<Bl4ckB1rD> how many cd's from mandrake do you have ?
<Bl4ckB1rD> cuz sometimes distribution gives out only server CD, which is only 1... without X windows and with minimal installation.
<Bl4ckB1rD> which is not what you want.
<blueglowy> how do apply 2 groups with different permissions to one folder?
<DaNnY|b0Y> ive installed 1 cd, it just didnt ask for more
<DaNnY|b0Y> now ive logged in with my name and not root, wrote init 5 and it doesnt even recognize that command
<Bl4ckB1rD> Danny did you install Gnome or KDE ?
<DaNnY|b0Y> KDE i guess
<Bl4ckB1rD> and X window ? did you install X window ?
<Bl4ckB1rD> blueglowy you can't as far as i know.
<DaNnY|b0Y> i dont remember :(
<blueglowy> what would i do then if i want one group to have read
<blueglowy> and another to read/write on the same folder?
<Bl4ckB1rD> you have to do it within FTP... or some program that allows you that...
<Bl4ckB1rD> you can give ownership of a certain group to a folder
<Bl4ckB1rD> and then set the permissions... like read write or execute.
<Bl4ckB1rD> i mean... you can chown a folder so that certain group has permission over this folder and then chmod it... but multiple groups... not that i'm aware...
<blueglowy> hmmm
<blueglowy> seems rather odd function not to have
<Bl4ckB1rD> chown it to some group... and then chmod for others to be able to just read
<Bl4ckB1rD> http://www.comptechdoc.org/os/linux/usersguide/linux_ugfilesp.html
<Bl4ckB1rD> like: chown ug+rwx folder
<Bl4ckB1rD> like: chmod ug+rwx folder
<Bl4ckB1rD> like: chmod o+r folder
<Bl4ckB1rD> this will give permission to one group only to read
<Bl4ckB1rD> and only one group to do everything.
<blueglowy> cool
<blueglowy> soundslike a solution
<blueglowy> thanks man ill try it out
<Bl4ckB1rD> sure.
<Bl4ckB1rD> DaNnY|b0Y type: startx
<Bl4ckB1rD> this should start X window...
<Bl4ckB1rD> but more proper way is: init 5
<Bl4ckB1rD> check also: /etc/inittab
<Bl4ckB1rD> set there 5 instead of 3 that you have
<RustyMemory> pff enouff Cing today
<Slicers> paradigm.dal.net real vhost hmmm

<BeyGnor> who r using azureus + vnc under federa?
<Sergeant_E> hey Guys
<Sergeant_E> i want to give my linux box an alias, so that when i ping it from my windows machine i can type something like this "ping linuxbox" instead of "ping 192.168.1.2"
<JavaManiaC> hiii anybody can tell me
<ancker> Sergeant_E: /etc/hosts
<JavaManiaC> what driver for canon pixma i can use on my slackware ?
<Sergeant_E> any ideas on how to do this ?
<ancker> Sergeant_E: look in that file
<Sergeant_E> i tried adding an entry to the hosts file but didn't help
<Sergeant_E> i did
<JavaManiaC> any body can tell me ?
<Sergeant_E> i added 192.168.1.2 linuxbox linuxbox
<simmy> MMmmmmmmmmm paczki!
<Blackstatic> Sergeant_E, you also have to add it to the windows hosts file
<Sergeant_E> Blackstatic that means i would have to do it on every machine in the network
<Sergeant_E> isn't there a simpler way
<Blackstatic> sure
<Blackstatic> make a dns box
<simmy> You could set up DNS. :)
<Blackstatic> dns server
<Sergeant_E> simmy that's way beyond me
<Blackstatic> no its not
<Sergeant_E> i tried manytimes b4 to setup dns server, couldn't get it right
<simmy> it's EASY! The DNS-HOWTO at tldp.org helped me set up a DNS server years ago...
<simmy> Follow the HOWTO. Step by step.
<simmy> You can do it.
<simmy> Really.
<Blackstatic> simmy hehe i <3 tldp i downloaded the entire site as a pdf ;x
<simmy> Or just go editing a ****load of hosts files. :)
<Blackstatic> took me a little while but it was done
<Sergeant_E> but how does windows do it, u just give a machine a name and u can ping it from any other machine with that name
<simmy> that's netbios.
<subnet> BacKo
<simmy> xarius ?! WTF are you doing here?!
<Sergeant_E> doesn't linux have something similar?
<simmy> :)
<simmy> Sergeant_E : Nope.
<Sergeant_E> hmmm
<xarius> simmy: Wha?
<Sergeant_E> but i had another distro installed earlier and it did that
<simmy> xarius : It's been a while.
<xarius> meh
<Sergeant_E> during hte installation i gave the machine the name server, and later all other pcs on the network could see it with that name
<xarius> Need to build a new computer
<simmy> http://home.palle.net/~omega/birdflu.jpg
<simmy> Sergeant_E : It probably set samba up so that the linux box was up in the windows workgroup. If you can't set DNS up from scratch, I'd doubt you can do samba. DNS is easy. Samba means you're dealing with windows crap.... not fun.
<simmy> although... if you follow this link, you shouldn't have trouble with samba, either...
<simmy> Sergeant_E : Have you been to O'Reilly and checked out "Using Samba?" It's a GREAT book that's available online for free in both html and pdf form. It's available at http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/index.html and http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/samba/chapter/book/indexpdf.html
<xarius> Samba was always pretty easy from the linux side of things, for me anyway
<Sergeant_E> hmmm
<Sergeant_E> so this has to do with samba
<simmy> I thought so, too.
<xarius> simmy: Been doing anything interesting lately?
<simmy> xarius : ME?! Doing anything interesting lately?
<simmy> ****... you HAVE been gone a while.
<xarius> O.o;
<simmy> I close on a condo in 10 days.
<xarius> Oh, well done!
<simmy> after that, a few weeks of hard work. Then I move in for good.
<simmy> I'm turnin the place into an uber-bachelor pad. Awwwww yeah!
<simmy> Have a friend coming out to help me make sure the place is masculine yet still female-friendly.
<subnet> how to add user on root under darwin ?
<xarius> useradd
<xarius> adduser sometimes
<subnet> -sh: useradd: command not found
<xarius> Darwin?
<xarius> Try iUseradd.app
<Blackstatic> subnet, ask in in a freebsd channel
<Blackstatic> they might now
<Blackstatic> know*
<Blackstatic> or
<Blackstatic> www.bsdguides.org
<simmy> vi /etc/p***wd && mkdir /home/newuser && chown -r newuser /home/newuser && p***wd newuser
<Ekushey> simmy: i'm tyring to p***word protect a directory, created .htaccess and .htp***wd file, but the directory is still not protected... can u pls help?
<subnet> kthnx

<simmy> xarius...
<xarius> Ekushey: Hrm?
