<0> kidding of course <1> Heh. <0> i'll call them later! <1> I love OSS, I use it whenever I can. But if the best tool for the job (tm) is proprietary, unfortunately, theability to eat superceeds politics. <2> no problem with that <3> hello <1> 'lo <3> need help <1> though, for what its worth, on the server-end I'm all OSS. <1> Hetero: with? <3> with WINE under linux <1> Heh. <1> What's the problem? <3> i wanna install a game <3> call of duty is it's name <0> i thought it had an installer for linux
<1> I'd advise Cedega for that. <3> i click on Setup.exe <1> Hetero: and? <3> i was changing the paths in WINE Configuration <1> okay. <3> now i've lost c:\ path <4> Hetero: Have you checked Frank's corner? <1> o_O <3> whythehell no <1> frankscorner.org <3> is there help on wine configuration? <1> its your friend. <4> Yes. <3> nice <4> 'cos we certainly aren't. <1> Heh. <3> i'll read <3> thanks <3> another Q <1> shoot <3> call of duty has two CDs to install the game <1> That's more of a statement, than a question... <3> and when the prompt Please insert CD 2 into your CD-ROM and press OK pops up i am not able to unmount the CD-ROM drive because it says it is busy <4> In any case, we don't support commercial software in this channel. <3> what to do? <1> type 'eject' into a console? <0> make sure you eject the right device if you have two CD drives <3> hello <5> hihi just installed my new burned..bought it from a friend for 10$ <5> 100:- Swedish <5> new cd-burner even <3> how can i reset the WINE configuration settings? <6> hello <3> i have removed wine and reinstalled it <0> Hetero: just remove your .wine folder, (***uming you don't have any software installed in it) because if your drive_c is inside that folder, everything installed will be gone <3> .wine folder <3> aha <0> ~/.wine <6> I am interested in learning linux, which distribution would you guys reccomend starting with? <3> please tell me just where is this folder located <0> BoogWeed: The best distributions for beginners are Ubuntu, Mandriva, Suse, and Fedora <3> in /root or /home ... ? <0> Hetero: ~ means home <3> aha <0> try it on the shell <3> on what? <0> Hetero: type echo ~ <3> in terminal you mean <0> The terminal is nothing but a shell <3> aha <3> i am new to linux so ... <0> it's called a terminal from a historical perspective <3> it's like a command prompt <0> in the old days, there was one server and a dumb screen + keyboard to each user, called terminal <3> it's a command shell <3> is it now called command shell or just shell? <0> i don't think dumb terminals even exist anymore <0> now it's called terminal <0> less commonly shell, which is what i prefer since i'm a comp sci student and a little anal retentive <3> but that terminal IS a shell <3> ar there any other shells beside the terminal?
<3> *are <0> the terminal, is just a shell, it's the window where you type your commands, so a terminal is a terminal <0> however, there are different shells <3> i see <0> the default shell on your terminal is called bash (bourne again shell) <0> derived from the older sh (shell) <0> sorry sh (bourne shell) <0> then there is csh (C shell) and ksh (korn shell) <3> i see <3> and what is that bin? <0> all are capable of doing the same job (more or less) but bash is by far the most popular <0> what bin? <0> the directory? <3> that bin is just a folder <0> a folder is the new stupid microsoft name for a directory <0> the original name is a directory <3> so in linux there are no folders? <0> anyway, if you want to learn what is the meaning of the different directories or folders in linux ... <3> in linux the expression is a directory not a folder, right? <0> Hetero: yes, that is the more common one (at least in the documentation) <0> Hetero: and that is the name is MS-DOS too <0> it has changed only recently because Bill Gates wished it <3> what? <0> Hetero: read this carefully, it would help give you a basic understanding -> http://www.tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/index.html <3> i haven't quite understood that part about MS-DOS <3> what were you trying to say? <0> Hetero: not important, just read the link, it has useful information about the directory structure in linux <3> you said: and that is the name is MS-DOS too <7> I see there has been no major fights while I've been gone. <3> please rephraze your text <0> Hetero: i meant that is the name IN MS-DOS too <3> what name? <0> is/in <0> k? <3> i see <0> the name directory! <3> aha <3> i am sorry but i have a hangover <3> i was drunk last night <0> now i suggest you read from the link, this would give you lots of information <6> Whats the best linux distrobution to get started with? <7> Slackware! :D <0> BoogWeed: there is no best distro <0> BoogWeed: ignore the_ruthless suggestion, Slackware is of no use for beginners <6> you know what i mean... <7> But I must agree with Cognition. There's the distros that will do what you want and need, and there's distros that won't. <0> BoogWeed: you might consider Ubuntu <7> BoogWeed: or the Mandriva. <0> BoogWeed: Mandriva is also very good <0> BoogWeed: and Fedora and Suse <6> i see... <7> Very click'n'play-ish. <0> BoogWeed: and didn't i just suggest those for you? <3> Cognition <0> BoogWeed: we're not going to make the decision for you, make up your mind <6> which is very click and playish? MAndriva? <7> Yeah. Probably Ubuntu, too. <0> BoogWeed: read this -> http://distrowatch.com/ <0> hope that would help <6> thank you <3> yesterday i was installing call of duty under linux (with WINE installed of course) <7> Cognition, I still believe Slackware is easy and straightforward to install. It just doesn't have the graphics and the mouse possibility. Actually making people use their keyboards. <0> BoogWeed: on second though, here is a better link http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major <3> and when the prompt to insert the next CD popped up, i was not able to eject the first CD and even unmount the drive <0> the_ruthless: it is NOT for newbies, especially if they want a good first impression <3> so i had to cancel the installation <0> Hetero: eject without unmounting <3> i was not able to eject <3> even without unmounting <0> Hetero: how did you do that? <7> Cognition, they'll get it installed, they'll get it up and running. Very quickly. Though they cannot play Solitaire while waiting. (I still remember Lycoris.) <0> Hetero: how did you issue the eject command? <7> But you're probably right, I should probably try one of the other distros.
