<0> omg omg
<1> sup evil ?
<2> probably not. linux and netbsd are available for amiga
<1> hehe ok
<1> but still, what about the hardware drivers ?
<2> http://www.informatik.uni-oldenburg.de/~amigo/inst.html
<1> heh
<1> # Got an Amiga 3000, 4000 or 2000 (with at least an '020 turbo board)?
<1> i got an 1200
<1> ;P
<2> ok, so you'll have a bit more of an adventure ;)
<1> hehe
<1> you know how little time i have for it heh
<2> lol make for it =)
<1> hehe this is the monster
<1> http://koti.mbnet.fi/~oju/retro/A1200.jpg

<3> lol
<1> CPU Motorola 68000
<1> RAM Kb
<2> cool. I wanted an Amiga 3000 (and later 4000) eons ago
<1> had a cd heh
<2> of course that's way back when we had to run from the T-Rexs and stuff ;)
<1> err CDTV
<1> yea ;)
<1> but oldschool systems are phun
<2> many of them are still pretty useful too
<1> yea :P
<2> I like to rehab older machines into routers, backup or file servers, and monitoring appliances
<1> nice heh
<2> they also make pretty good test machines sometime
<2> +s
<1> remember the atari computers ? ;)
<4> dp2 : That's sometimes a silly thing to do if you're going to spend 3x teh electricity running an old box (without power management)
<2> yes. I had 2: the 400 and one of the ST ones
<1> this was so "l33t"
<1> http://computermuseum.50megs.com/images/collection/atari-portfolio.jpg
<4> Or if it's JUST a simple router/firewall, you can put a commercial cable/dsl router in there and MAYBE lose some functionality, but use 1/10th the electricity. That's usually worth the $50 for the router.
<2> wasteful, perhaps. silly, perhaps not. I'm doing it primarily for research and field testing
<1> haha
<1> http://computermuseum.50megs.com/images/collection/atari-400.jpg
<2> besides, even for those older machines, since we're dealing with solid state electronics, the power consumption is low
<4> research/testing is another story.
<4> I know people that run P2's as firwalls cause they want to save money by not buying a linksys router.
<4> THAT is silly because the big machine will burn more electricity in a year than the cost+electricity for a little commercial cablerouter.
<2> true and the cost to maintain the machine vs the router is even a larger difference (in scale)
<0> no ****
<0> linksys is dirt cheap and much better quality
<0> and smaller form factor too :-D
<2> smaller footprint too :)
<1> and then software is cheaper ;)
<0> software?
<0> software is free (linux)
<1> i was thinking of a firewall
<0> except some more recent versions of linksys routers they put a commercial rtos on it
<2> as beer or as freedom? ;)
<1> must be freedom since you dont drink beer heh
<2> :)
<2> I was vamping off of evil's "linux is free . . ."
<2> so rootbeer doesn't count? :P
<1> heh
<2> persistent booger.
<5> yea
<1> DUDE go cut your hair and get a JOB!!
<6> dammit.. anybody know anything about setting up a CD burner in linux? I'm running slack 10.2, and I set up my /etc/modules.conf and /etc.lilo.conf for it, and I can burn CD's fine. but when I try to mount the CD drive for reading, it just gives me the error says to specify a filesystem.. and even when I do, it still gives me that error.
<6> well...I can burn cd's with cdrecord anyway.. k3b won't even open.
<6> hmm.. just checked, the reason k3b isn't opening is because it can't find libsamplerate.so.0
<6> i'll install that and see what happens
<6> hmm.. installed libsamplerate and it still does the same thing. "k3b:error while loading shared libraries: libsamplerate.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory"
<7> bbl all

<8> simmy: so i'm not the only one
<8> simmy: big relieve :)
<4> nah.... it happens all the time.
<4> I've made it a point to _NEVER_ authenticate while i'm in a channel.
<4> my system-level stuff goes into window 0 :)
<8> good practice
<4> system-level stuf like... oh, I dunno... /m nickserv stuff /m chanserv stuff etc.
<4> that way, if I type...
<4> nickserv identify simmy omgitsmyp***wordlolololol
<4> I'm not screwed. :)
<3> lol
<4> btw... I started teh window 0 stuff when _I_ posted my p***word into #linux.
<6> sweet i got it now.. forgot ide-scsi changes it from /dev/cdrom to /dev/sr0
<4> It wasn't distinguishable, though.
<8> It takes one to know one i guess
<4> heh.
<4> my aliases tend to be a bit cryptic. Well.. the systems-level ones, anyway.
<4> gah! I have this damn song stuck in my head....

<0> mahaha
<0> lalala
<0> fsck it fsck
<0> mantelly insane
<12> hey.. what would be the easiest, and most compressing way to backup my entire /home/ directory?
<13> tar -jcvf
<12> hmm
<12> tar -jcvf backup.tar.bz2 /home/interex ?
<13> yup
<0> rm is most compressing
<12> lol
<12> i'm doing that next
<12> i need to make more space, i'm down to 10 mb on / and 50 mb on /home
<12> and my windows partition is 9gb
<12> so i'm going to remove it
<12> i should do this at p3nguin's since he's got higher bandwidth than i do and it would be easier for me to upgrade
<12> so im backing up to my remote pc
