<3> hi! i've a little problem... i've a Server who crashes and i'm trying to backup the disks ... so, i mount the disk, but I can't acces the files 'cause that some folders are locked (the FS is reiserfs)
<3> some folders are locked, but not all
<4> simmy: use your lack of sleep and find me a good road bike for <$150
<5> good * bike != $150
<5> ancker : Do you want a good bike, or do you want something sub-150?
<5> Problem with what you're asking for is that at $150, you're dealing with "walmart bikes" ... which aren't really bikes. They're clusters of crappy tubing and ****ty components that're thrown together by someone that barely understands what a wrench is. They're not built to last. They're built to be as cheap as possible.
<5> If you want a real bike, you're looking at something out of a bike shop. A real, genuine bike shop. Entry level at a bike shop is usually $3-$400. And that'll get you bargain-basement in a brand name.
<4> grrr
<5> good road bikes cost significantly more than $150. Maybe if you add a 0 in there, you'll be in the right neighborhood.
<5> Now that I got the elitist cycling crap outta the way... ;)
<5> a good road bike can also be defined by : a road bike that fits you properly that you'll enjoy riding.
<5> Still... most people think of a "road bike" as a sleek frame with drop-style handlebars. You'll probably have some trouble finding that style bike for $150 unless you find one that's used. If you're willing...
<5> hit up wrenchscience.com and start measuring yourself. Might need some help (ask that hot GF of yours). Let the size thingy tell you what size frame you should be dealing with... take those numbers and start shopping for used bikes on ebay, craigslist, etc. May have to wait till spring for more options. It's still the ****ty season right now. :(
<4> I want a way to get cardio. I had thought about stationery bike, but decided against it since I'd like to ride outside when it warms up....
<5> http://www.khsbicycles.com/08_tan_milano_07.htm I'm looking at buying one of these. :)
<4> so I changed my mind to "decent bike and trainer/rollers"
<5> ancker : If you want cardio... any bike you buy would be a good option.
<5> want my honest opinion?
<4> I'm going for minimal investment so if I lose interest, I can resell and have only lost a small amount
<5> You've still got your fancy, cushy job. Right?
<4> yeah
<5> Set aside the $400, or so, for a bike-store bike. Ride the hell out of it. Make sure you buy from a reputable store that'll take the time to understand what you want out of the bike, the conditions you expect to be riding in, your level of fitness (and expected level of fitness), and all that other good stuff
<5> Make sure they take time to FIT YOU! I'm not talking about a full-blown ($200) fitting session. But make sure they take time to explain about leg extension, handlebar height, etc.
<5> If it turns out you don't like riding... You can probably flip the bike on ebay or craig's list for 3/4 of what you paid for it. You lose $100.
<5> If you love it... you've got a bike that'll stand up to the rigors of real use. It will have standard connections, holes, components... and you can replace them easily as they wear out (they WILL wear out).
<5> When the ****ty-season comes around... you'll have a bike that actually fits, you invest some money in rollers or a stomp-and-spin, and you continue to work out.
<5> ancker : I recommend against the el-cheapos because they tend to ride like rocks, they're very difficult to maintain, and they don't stand up to real mileage if you actually start riding the hell out of the thing. I've seen walmart bikes fall apart after 500 miles of riding (that's not that much, really).... which sends you out to buy a new bike, anyway.
<6> ancker: You know you asked for "good bike" advice from a guy that has extra emergency gear shifts?
<5> I do not!
<6> You said you did! That you had some 3982 speed bike!
<5> jblack : You know that in MY eyes, a good bike doesn't start for less than a grand!
<5> jblack : My bike is 27-speed.
<5> I've seen an 81-speed recumbent.
<6> I know that a good bike to you means more money than a a crappy used car. I respect that.
<5> but 27 gear combinations is not excessive.
<5> Hell... entry-level road bikes can have 30-speeds, nowadays!
<5> sorry... entry-level "bike shop" road bikes...

<7> 81 speeds, damn that seems excessive.
<7> Talk about spending a lot of time shifting.
<6> "good bike <$150" tells me that he's not looking for what you consider a good bike. :)
<5> Visigoth : It had a normal 27-speed deraileur-based drivetrain... with a 3-speed internal-gear rear hub. it was for if you screwed up and forgot to shift at the bottom of a hill, you could switch the gearing to start accelerating. recumbents are a different type of beast. can't just grab the seat, lift the rear wheel, and spin a pedal.
<5> jblack : If you go into something saying "I want to get in really really cheap so that i'm not out a lot of cash if I hate it" .... You're already providing yourself an excuse to stop doing it.
<6> Is ancker still here?
<7> Hmm, are thise recumbents the ones that automatically shift for you? I saw a bike once that did everything on its own, looked pretty slick.
<6> I'm no bike expert.
<5> Visigoth ; Most people have never seen a recumbent. Lemme go get a pic. :)
<6> I'm not fighting, or picking on anyone.
<5> http://www.bicycleman.com/ (top-left)
<5> You sit down into the thing, the handlebar comes up between your legs (or is down under the seat) and your feet stick out in front of you, where the pedals are.
<7> That's interesting.. Hmm, I'd like to try one out.
<2> why not just get a regular old BMX bike
<6> YUCK
<5> Al-Ashtar : the gearing is so you can maintain a consistent cadence (speed at which you pedal). by maintaining a proper cadence you improve your efficiency, reduce (or eliminate) weird pressures on your knees, and make it possible to get up some nasty hills.
<5> I also challenge you to ride 100 miles in a day on a BMX.
<5> an don a BMX, you'r sitting straight up... which turns your body into a wind sail. Great on the tail winds... not so great in a headwind.
<2> Oh, over here we don't have hills. that's why I always see BMX
<6> I used to do 15 miles a day on a bmx
<6> I was a child back then.
<5> ancker : If you're looking for something inexpensive (but still having replaceable parts, an such)... Trek's 7000 is a "bike path/fitness" bike with an MSRP of $279.99.
<5> http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1310000&f=27
<5> At that price, you could start riding and decide if you enjoy it (make sure the bike fits)... and not be out an ***load of cash if you dno't like it. (it'll resell reasonably)
<8> lol
<5> RegisteredHexOffender : yeah,... I had one, too.... Schwinn Stingray.
<9> I don't even know what mine was.
<5> ape-hanger handlebars, big ol banana seat. Swoopy red frame. yeah.....
<9> It was purple and had unicorns and rainbows.
<5> http://www.schwinnstingray.com/history.html
<5> Mine didn't have the suspension fork, though.
<9> Man, I just got owned. :-(
<6> Double yuck.
<5> http://www.schwinnstingray.com/bike-cl***ic.html
<5> OH MY GOD! My first bike!
<5> Kinda wish I still had that thing. Even in crappy shape, the originals are worth quite a bit of scrap.
<4> jblack: I'm still here, just busy as hell
<4> and about to step out to a meeting
<6> ancker: Ok. Simmy basically says 'you can't'
<9> My parents still have my old bikes.
<5> ancker : $279 MSRP... http://www2.trekbikes.com/bikes/bike.php?bikeid=1310000&f=27
<4> simmy: I definitely appreciate you help here....
<4> I was just hoping for MINIMAL investment
<2> my first bike had two small wheels at the back :/
<4> I think I'm okay with "crappy rides like a rock" bike for now....if I get into it, I can always upgrade
<5> ancker : that Trek 7000 is pretty minimal. It gets you into a "bike store" bike, real brand, name-brand components (which means you can actually fix the thing if you need to)... and it's not prohibitively expensive.
<5> *subliminal message* helmets are cool. You should get one. They can save your life *subliminal message*
<4> If I spend $400, I can't exactly downgrade...I can resell, but likely not for very much around here
<9> I think it would be great to have one of those ancient bikes that have the huge wheel in front. Imagine riding that in public.
<2> get a bike that is debian-based so that if you like biking, you can always "apt-get bike-upgrade"
<9> Al-Ashtar: lol!
<5> RegisteredHexOffender : a penny farthing? People still ride those, on occasion.
<5> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penny-farthing
<4> you're forgetting I live in a college town with 40k undergrads, the buyers are plenty, but their wallets are empty
<9> That's it! Thanks simmy.
<4> bbl, meeting
<2> there are people who fart a penny ?!!!
<10> farthing = quarter-penny
<2> oh, farthing
<2> my mistake
<2> how did they get on top of those bikes !
<9> I'm disappointed with these new bed sheets. My fitted sheet has no corners whatsoever, and my flat sheet is made upside down!
<10> l33t biking 5k1llz
<9> But they have penguins on!
<2> lol
<11> RegisteredHexOffender: If it doesn't have corners, how is it fitted?
<10> "fitted" sheet, clearly
<9> It has the elastic all the way around it.
<11> oh
<9> I think it's a big circle!
<2> elastic belt is better
<11> And you're going to make me sleep on it?
