<0> Cognition: Like a VMware machine copy to hardware.
<1> Dralock : You need to get a vmware machine down onto a real piece of hardware?
<2> Dralock: oh, ***uming that's possible, I don't think it's a good idea.
<2> Dralock: you have to reconfigure the hardware on an existing system. You also need to setup the MBR, and rename many things
<0> simmy, cog: Well, its kind of like, I build a crapton of machines, and want to have one operating system that I keep up and can plug in what hardware I need, copy the entire thing raw to the storage media, and ship it.
<2> now that I think of it, I don't think it's possible
<3> Al-Ashtar: because I've noticed people treat you rather differently based on what gender they think you are, and it's annoying. people who think I'm male think I'm not allowed to be snuggly, huggly, cute, etc. people who think I'm female are always surprised I like cars, women, etc.
<1> Dralock : When I've had to do that, I use a ghost boot disk and boot vmware with the ghost disk. I then dump the data onto a USB hard drive (mounted within the vmware session). THEN, I boot the real hardware with a ghost disk, and write the image down to the real hardware.
<0> hrm
<0> that doesn't sound too bad though
<1> Dralock : Note... this DOES NOT work for windows. All that device manager **** just blows up. Works great for *nix, though.
<3> so I've decided to always use gender-neutral pronouns, and let people think whatever the hell they want to think. :P
<1> Dralock : I SHOULD still have an image, around here, of a ghost disk that'll work with a usb hard drive... I can send it to you if you'd like.
<0> Yea, I'm finding a solution for our clients that want to graduate from a VirtualPBX to one of their own.
<4> ok, I'll do that too
<2> furrywolf: I will NEVER think of you as a girl, that's for sure

<4> I'm no longer male
<0> Since we do everything in VMware, making the install step go quicker is a big plus for me.
<4> I'm a gender-neutral person
<3> Cognition: heh. many people seem to ***ume I'm female...
<5> why Adobe Reade 7.0.5 don't want run on mandriva?
<2> you freak :) /me flinches
<3> eh?
<0> simmy: When you say device manager **** blows up, do you mean freaking the system out with a bunch of new hardware suddenly, or do you mean it just doesn't like changing from the virtual hardware specs to real?
<0> Because creating the VM would entail using specific hardware that would change only once in a blue moon.
<1> Dralock : both.
<3> my guess would be it would blow up in some fashion that it either won't boot at all or will eat itself when it does.
<0> I know those are two different points I'm making, but you brought it up :P
<0> Ok
<0> Well thats cool man
<1> Dralock : Think of how many problems you run into when you take a hard drive from one machine and plop it into a completely different machine and boot it up.
<0> yeap
<2> what the heck is a ghost boot disk anyway?
<1> That's the kind of issues you have with windows in vmware->windows on hardware.
<1> Cognition : a boot disk with a copy of ghost on it (usually with USB support for hard drives, network support, etc)
<0> At the same time though, I can take two systems with the same hardware and swap drives, and usually not have many problems.
<1> Dralock : Aye...
<2> ahh ok
<0> I would have to mod the stuff to not be a "vmwareXx" version of the hardware obviously.
<0> I like your ghost idea
<1> Dralock : Just know that it IS possible to dump an image from vmware->hardware if you use an intermediate step.
<0> very freakin cool
<1> Dralock : I actually DID do that and had success one way...
<1> my company has a standard windows image they use on laptops. I imaged it to a USB HD, loaded vmware, and dumped the image into vmware. Worked great.
<1> If I try to take my vmware image and dump to hardware... device manager does bad things and i get BSOD's all over the place.
<1> sorry... an image of my current vmware load.
<3> moral of the story: don't use windows. :)
<3> a BSOD is absolutely never acceptable, even with unexpected hardware.
<1> /agree
<3> linux, on the other hand, I've moved between vastly different boxes with no problems, as long as I have the right drivers compiled in to load the root fs on the other box...
<0> furrywolf: /agree. Though windows is the only operating system I actually need install management for.
<0> Everything else is quick and simple.
<0> OsX, simple, Linux, easy, BSD, no problem. Windows - six hours of hell.
<3> only six? you must use a cd with the latest service pack already applied, not install virus protection, etc. :)
<0> It only takes six hours to install and update SBS2k3.
<1> ugh.. SBS.......
<6> damn
<1> If you've done enterprise-level stuff and hav eto go to SBS... hold on to your ***.. .cause EVERYTHING IN SBS IS WRONG!
<0> yes
<0> its all in the wrong place
<3> you must also install on the same hardware repeatedly... it ususally takes me at least a half day to track down all the various drivers needed to make a system work, figure out why they break things when installed, try finding other versions and hope they don't break things, etc, etc, etc...
<0> the scripts are different
<0> furrywolf: fortunately, the hardware I am given changes infrequently.
<3> and you must have newish hardware, installing xp on a pentium 3 takes more than 6 hours even if everything goes well. :P
<0> In fact, I would almost venture to guess that group policy queries are actually written to function differently than any other DC environment out there.
<0> So, no good making nice dynamic listings.
<0> meh
<0> furrywolf: Well, generally clients don't buy SBS2k3 for their P3.
<3> heh
<3> the only people I install windows for are friends of friends/relatives who want to pay me to do it... I usually plan on 2 days of hell. :)
<3> some of them I've successfully switched to linux. :)
<0> heh
<0> I have switched some clients to linux for the cost savings on managed desktop environments.
<0> No one likes TS licensing fees
<0> And some people are actually starting to say "you are freaking kidding me" when I show them the newer versions of openoffice
<3> I downgraded back to oo 1.1... 2.0 was too horribly buggy to use.

<0> its kinda cool really, all those dreams we had about this sort of thing ten years ago are starting to happen in every day life.
<3> I could not get oo 2.0 to run stably (i.e. stay running for more than a half hour), and it had lots of problems such as deciding the UI font should be beyond-stupidly large and ignoring any attempts to change it. (a known bug they didn't bother fixing, apparantly)
<0> heh
<0> 1.1 is a good stable release
<3> 1.1 I've had no problems with.
<3> and 2.0 didn't even seem to do anything new.
<0> yea, most of the "features" upgrades I was interested in XFCE ended up putting in their WM anyway.
<3> bbl, starting some food cooking then calling customers.
<7> It'd be fun if you had a rappel =)
<8> WINDOWS!
<0> O...k
<0> Someone had a nice big healping of trollios this morning I see.
<1> trollios.... hhahhahahah

<10> just type "sudo apt-get install xchat"
<9> type in where lapjack?
<10> in a shell...
<9> no need installer is it?
<10> nope
<10> Welcome to the wonderful world of package managers.
<9> i see..
<9> let me try..
<10> if you need just about anything.. you can type "apt-cache search WHATEVER"
<11> car|: Its in synaptic.
<9> =)
<11> that graphical package manager, where you double click on things.
<10> ah.. yes, synaptic too
<9> gimme second
<9> i want to have a look on it
<12> does anyone here use a linksys wrt54gs router?
<10> <-
<10> oh, wrt54g.. no S
<9> lapjack: Type in terminal is it ----->> sudo apt-get install xchat
<10> if you're not using synaptic, yes
<2> LanaTheGreat: that's not a very useful question. If you state the problem people might help you
<9> i see..
<10> car|, that will install xchat, as well as any dependencies that xchat needs to work
<9> owh i see...
<12> okay, i have a linksys wrt54gs router, but when i log on to it the page displays incorrectly
<9> man..
<2> what do you meajn by incorrectly?
<9> i can't type my p***word in the teminal
<9> :(
<10> you can't type your p***word?
<2> car|: yes you can, it just doesn't show
<9> yes
<9> i see i see..
