<0> I suggest you find out how many releases Debian actually has. <1> dist-upgrade usually works. Usually. <2> I have an installation called Woody, it came with kernel 2.4
<2> Now I want to upgrade to sarge and kernel 2.6 <2> I know that if I just compile kernel 2.6 it will not work..tried already <2> it will complain about module-tools and stuff.. <2> So I need to upgrade some other things first .. before compiling the kernel <2> There must be a upgrade procedure ? <1> change woody to sarge in your sources.list file, do an apt-get update, then an upgrade. Then apt-cache search kernel-image|grep 2.6 and pick your kernel. Apt-get install kernel-image-i386-2.6.14.2 (making up a name here) should get you everything you need to kick your kernel up to the next major version. <1> From there, a dist-upgrade is usually sufficient. <2> aha <2> And then it should work to compile new kernel also becuase all needed tools are there ? <1> who said anything about compiling a kernel? You shouldn't NEED to.
<2> no need? <1> want, maybe. Need? Not usually. <0> *sighs* <2> don't I need to specify which drivers and network modules I want the kernel to support ? <1> poppor_ : nope... the debian kernels come with damn near everything modularized for you. <2> hmm <2> I have always needed to do that myself before <2> maybe things have changed :) <2> ok.. I'll try and see what happens <2> thanks for the help!
