<0> ?
<0> anyone outhere can help me ?
<0> can anyone tell me how to adduser ?
<1> gorgiah: useradd -u <uid> -g <primary_group> -G <additional_group01>,<additional_group02>,... -d /home/<username> -m -k /etc/skel <username>
<1> you should read about 'unix basics'
<2> quote: "<1> you should read about 'unix basics'" lololzzzz..... that's a good one.....
<0> iddqd
<0> how to setup psybnc in shell ?
<1> gorgiah: i don't know, i've never used that kind of software
<1> reasondns: was that funny?
<3> how do i install gcc
<3> ?
<4> hiccup: what distro?
<3> freebsd5.4
<4> try #freebsd

<5> mmm
<6> http://www.mercy.org.my/
<7> taking its time to open :\
<8> just out of curiosity, has anyone ever set up Zimbra?
<3> what is a .bz2 file?
<9> hiccup : it's a bzipped file
<3> how do i unzip it .. eg. file test.tar.bz2
<9> tar xjvf file.bz2
<6> http://www.milaadesign.com/wizardy.html
<8> took me a second to realize the image repeats every 9 times
<6> Al-Ashtar: http://www.milaadesign.com/wizardy.html
<6> freaky math
<6> http://www.milaadesign.com/wizardy.html <-- anyone have any idea how this is done ?
<10> How y'all doin?
<11> coding
<10> Mmmm . . . code.
<10> What language?
<11> C
<7> chicken
<11> lol right
<12> :P
<11> the mother of all languages :P
<11> it doesnt matter really..
<11> the hard part is to figure the algorithms anyway
<11> once you have them any code monkey can translate to teir own favorite language :P
<10> What do you use to code? I mean, like, do you just type it all into vi or emacs or something, or do you use something that has a debugger?
<11> gedit actually
<11> i just use printf to debug lol..
<11> its good to have working i/o..
<11> in some instance you have no choice but to use a debugger
<11> but i'd rather avoid it whenever possible
<10> Heh. I **** at coding. Had to take computer science in high school to graduate, and C was both the language and my final grade.
<11> like when you develop for an embedded system and you cant even output something :S you can like.. make a LED blink at some point.. oh, it blinks!! means my function fails after that line :P
<7> lol
<7> learn asm for hardware
<11> yea, first you learn asm and you're happy
<11> then you find out there's a C compiler for your target and you're happier :P
<7> hehe true
<11> and you realize your 1000 lines of asm that took 2 days to write can be done with 50 lines of C in 15 minutes
<7> LIES !! :D
<7> br
<7> brb*
<11> not
<7> sure they are :D
<11> a simple for loop can turn to nightmare in asm
<11> if you have a few continue/break in there.. it becomes goto land
<8> jmp jmp jmp
<8> jmp for joy
<13> :)
<14> I hate my isp
<15> I hate thunder storms.
<14> they cost me the longest uptime ever :(
<14> 4 days
<14> hehe
<15> I had a couple of weeks...
<15> My little sister powered of the computers while I was away... So they hadn't been shut down properly, either.
<11> 4days??
<11> newb
<10> Thunderstorm? Or is she just a cheapskate and wanted to conserve power?

<15> *Plans to buy some UPS's and stuff*
<11> even microsux stays up longer -_-
<15> Soutane: thunderstorm. For real.
<11> hm.. you have thunder protection in your electrical board?
<15> Soutane: she wants uptime as well. We're the kind that never ever turns of stereos and computers unless they are to be MOVED or if there is thunderstorms.
<11> cuz otherwise you might want to unplug anything sensitive
<15> evil-dna: we have to unplug everything.
<11> i see
<16> surge-arrestor?
<15> Last time a thunderstorm hit here about, the electric toothbrush got fried. :D
<11> if you live in a place with frequent storms, you could install it
<11> its just a module you place in the elec board
<11> yea surge protector i guess
<15> Yeah, I could. But I won't. There are probably two or three thunderstorms every summer, and that's about it. And I'm moving within a month anyway.
<15> So I'll just buy surge protectors and UPS's when I get to the new place, probably.
<10> My father absolutely insists on unplugging the computers during thunderstorms. Funny thing is that he doesn't throw the breaker to the heat pump, washer, dryer, oven, or any of the other MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE appliances. Don't quite understand that.
<15> Are there surge protectors for network stuff as well?
<15> RJ-45 like?
<10> the_ruthless: heh. We dealt with that issue by going wireless.
<8> if you get high voltage on your cat5, you got bigger problems
<15> Soutane: for me, wireless will never ever be an option.
<10> How come?
<15> daucus_carota: So I have to unplug? There are no other way?
<16> adsl line
<15> Soutane: Because I like the stability, the performance and the safety of the Cat5e.
<8> the network cable? You shouldn't have to do anything with
<16> wireless ant have surget areestor
<8> it
<16> network cable is internal
<16> does not connect to the outside world
<10> evil-dna: do those things really work? My dad, an electrical engineer, says that a lightening strike would fry motherboards before a surge protector even gets warm.
<15> daucus_carota: so, if I get high voltage on my cat5, what will my bigger problems be?
<8> fire, for one
<8> and something gone horrible wrong somewhere.. there should be no way for high voltage to get to the network cabling
<8> and yes, lightning can fry a board before the breaker has time to trup
<8> trip
<15> daucus_carota: so, if it hits the modem/router, the unit should burn to ashes/melt/explode, BUT the network cables will be safe?
<16> surge arrestor is diff from a mcb or elcb
<8> the_ruthless, the power and network connections should be isolated from each other in the device
<15> daucus_carota: so me unplugging all RJ-45's have just been senseless paranoia? ;P
<10> daucus_carota: but the thing is, if a lightening strike causes a spike in the power lines, it could cause a voltage spike in the phone line/cable line/etc.
<8> I mean there is a _slim_ chance that if it takes a big enough hit you could get an arc or something
<8> yes
<8> phone line, yes
<11> Soutane, your dad prolly knows more than me lol.. i have no idea how it works.. i think basically like a differential switch? but its true the surge from a lighting must have a very short rise time :/
<15> Long live senseless paranoia! ;P
<8> network cabling.. very very unlikely
<8> in fact, I have cat5 running out of my router to a radio on the roof... never had any problems
<11> how about good old fuses.. surely they would melt first
<10> evil-dna: it also has something to do with the fact that the cpu bus operates at a fraction of a volt. A spike of even one volt will fry all those delicate semiconductors, but everything else in the house will be unaffected, since they all run on 120V.
<11> hm.. but there's a transfo in there.. and i think a PC power unit has some advanced electronics
<8> regulator, capicators.. the even things out
<8> but they can't absorb anything like a lightning strike
<11> is there a fuse in there?
<10> Yeah, that's the only thing I don't know about. You would think the PC's power supply would prevent that from the power bus. OTOH, most modems and NICs don't have surge protection, so a power spike there would come right into the back of the box and fry things.
<15> And a surge protector would not help?
<8> my older power supplies used to have a gl*** screw-in fuse
<11> its true that the fuse wouldnt matter if the voltage gets really high and arcs :/
<8> I've not seen one in a long time though
<8> a surge protector _helps_
<8> line voltage fluctuates all the time
<8> but pretty much nothing can take on mother nature when she's pissed
<15> A surge protector also helps when the lightning hits?
<10> evil-dna: but not only that, but it takes time for a fuse to melt. Cause the fuse has to first get hot, then melt. That'll take a second. During which time, those silicon wafers in your box will be screaming in agony.
<17> www.linuxabout.info
<10> Same thing with breakers. The breaker won't trip until it gets hot, and that'll take time. Not a lot of time, but enough for a voltage spike to make it through. And that's enough time to toast a box.
<11> lol.. a second..
<15> Electricity is really scary.
<15> Nature stuff is really scary.
<10> It's not safe. Every year, more than ten people are electrocuted by electric devices falling into their bathtub.
<10> We need to BAN ELECTRICITY NOW!
<15> Now, that's STUPIDITY. It's not the same thing at all.
<10> How many people have to die before the federal government takes action?
