<0> ?
<1> simmy: I've had some REALLY close calls on a bike a number of times
<2> It got hurt bad, but they lost.
<0> I took a defensive cycling course years ago. I use it more than I care to think about.
<3> DataCable, howdy
<0> insta-turns are the worst... when someone turns in front of you and force you to nearly lay the bike down while you turn with 'em.
<2> It takes a lot to get me to the point of destruction, but when you corner me you better be ready for anything to happen.
<0> thankfully, those sorts of things have become almost reflex... so it's not scary till after it happens.
<0> p3nguin : Survival instinct is stronger than most, eh? :)

<1> One time I took a hair pin turn on my bike... the bike slide under an oncomming truck, between ih wheels. Fortunatly I was not still on the bike.
<2> simmy: That's like me on the motorcycle. I've had some bad car drivers do some bad **** with me a little too close.
<1> One time someone did that instaturn crap to me... I turned with em by crashing into there door. I used the car as a turning aid... and made the turn with them
<1> They were SO freaked out
<0> DataCable: Wow... yeah... that kind of **** is scary as hell... afterwards.
<0> when it happens, anymore, I just react.
<0> quick left flick and then lay the bike down to the right, weight the outside foot and put the knee out to help couterbalance the weight. I saw a video of me doing that not too long ago (someone was taping me when I was doing maneuverability drills at a park) and it was just poetry in motion.
<0> I was rather proud of myself. :)
<1> simmy: Nice
<1> simmy: whats the worse wreck youever had?
<0> DaTa-MaN : Now the real question... you talking about a motorbike or a pedalbike?
<0> worst wreck? I've had three that're memorable.... In order of severity...
<1> simmy: Pedal bike
<0> first day out on the new bike with clipless pedals... was crossing an entrance to a subdivision. WOman in an SUV pulled out right nin front of me. I slammed on the brakes, buried the front shock. And stopped JUST in time to hot run into her.
<0> Then I remmebered that I had clipless pedals and just fell right over. Took a sprocket in the ankle. 2 stitches inside. 2 outside. I one-legged it home with the other foot hanging, dripping blood out the toe of the shoe.
<0> second... before I took the defensive riding course, someone turned out in front of me. I didn't know to turn with 'em. I went up over the hood. Took the bike with me. Clipped in. Dragged me and the bike across the hood and landed on my side. Bike was fine. I was bruised and shook up. Did like 1800 in damage to the dude's car.
<0> he got a ticket. Big one.
<0> But the worst was years ago. I as at a local park doing a loop that I'd done billions of times before... got speed on a flat before a downhill. Hit the thing at about 30mph. Then downhill. WEEEE! OH! ****! It's sandy!!!!!!!!!!!!
<0> the bike went perpendicular to the direction of travel. We went airborn... I pushed the bike away, slid head-first into a tree, cracked my helmet. Mild concussion.
<0> 3 days later, 4 of us went back to the park to pry the bike off of the tree it wrapped around. That bike hung in a shop for a few years with a sign on it... "Slow down!"
<1> simmy: Damn! You a better man then me. I will NOT ride a bike clipped. No way in hell! It's suicide.
<0> oh, man... once you get used to being clipped in, it's GREAT! I feel so much more secure being clipped in than I do on platforms.
<0> there have been a few times the clips have saved my ***.
<0> it's great being able to jump and have the bike jump with you. :)
<1> Worst wreck I ever had was going about 35 or 40... 11pm, raining, full racing tuck, no helmet. Got some road junk thrown in my face, so I couldn't see for a while. But it's ok... it's 11pm, and the city is always a ghost town at that time.
<1> Cept for that ONE car stopped at the stop light that I can't see.
<0> oh, no.....
<1> I rear ended going full speed
<0> O U C H !
<0> Were you OK?
<1> bike totaled..... $3000 damage to the car.... $7000 hospital bill, around 200 stitches, and about 25 feet of air time :-P
<1> yeah
<4> well, there's one good thing about a bike accident over a motorcycle accident.
<1> I was gonna ride my bike home
<4> You don't have a quarter ton of metal following you down the street.
<5> Who me simmy?

<1> But I couldn't see out of one eye, cuase it was covered with blood
<5> Nice pictures jblack :)
<1> Turned out to be a very cool "anime" scar
<1> Right over the center of one eye
<1> no lasting damage... jut a LOT of scars
<0> DaTa-MaN : Glad you were alright.
<1> simmy: It's usually not too bad as long as you can GET THE BIKE AWAY FROM YOU.
<1> The bike is what will kill you
<0> I'm going to try to start racing like... next month... catch the end of the season. We'll see what happens there.
<0> Eh... depends on what kind of riding you're doing.
<1> yeah... I guess so
<0> If you're doing trick riding on a BMX, they usually recommend you hold onto the thing so you at least know where the bike is going. Makes it easier than if the bike's doing its own thing, bearing down on you.l
<1> I'm a street rider... so it's always traffic.... and I usually ride 21 speed mountain bike
<4> PA is a little hilly.
<4> And I've got too much weight these days.
<0> DaTa-MaN: yeah... that's the story of my life, right now... 27-speed mtb with slicks on it.
<1> I'm not brave enough to ride the little curly handel 10 speeds with thin tires
<0> jblack: cycling is ALL about cardio and is a great way to take weight off.
<0> DaTa-MaN : heh... I'm looking at picking up a Specialized Roubaix in the next year or two... put som Zipp CSC Team wheels on it to bring the weight down and the speed up...
<1> I haven't done any real biking in several years
<0> OH, yeah.... that's my dream, right now.
<0> 17lb carbon fiber road rocket....
<1> simmy: You ever think about putting cowling on a bike? I hear that if you do it right... it can make a BIG difference
<1> Some guy went 60mph on a bike like that once
<0> not on a traditional bike. I've seen guys go sickeningly fast on a bent with a cowling, though.
<0> Hell... human-powered land speed record is in the 80's on an enclosed bent. (basically)
<0> sorry.. 70
<0> 70's...
<0> Sam Whittingham did it on Oct 13, 2000 with a speed of 72.74mph The bike's name was "Mephisto"
<0> http://www.speed101.com/now/fastest_0127_6.htm
<0> bottom of the page.
<1> Damn!
<0> yeah.... no kidding.
<0> .1 mile in 6 seconds. Can you imagine?!
<0> wonder what kind of gear-length he had on that. It'd be itneresting to know.
<1> simmy: you ever look into other human vehicles.... like the pedal powered airplane?
<1> I looked into that once... an aeronautical engineer that I know told me that takes an Olimpic cl*** athlete te get one off the ground. I always wondered if it was true.
<6> Hello !
<5> Hello.
<6> How are you doing DataCable?
<5> Doing good and you?
<6> fine thanks
